New York City Subway Car Datasheet Author: Kris Datta (R160B8713 on NYCT Forums, R32_3348 on Rider Diaries, R160 8818 on Subchat) Editor/Designer: Henry Man (MTR Admiralty on NYCT Forums) Editor: Mike Kam This datasheet can also be found on www.nyctransitforums.com and http://www.thejoekorner.com/cars/NYC-SubwayCar-Datasheet.pdf (Special thanks to Harry and Joe for hosting it!) Datasheet as of 05/22/09 (Updated – R40 retirements, R46 transfers) Colour Code: Red- Fully Retired Orange- Many cars retired, to be fully retired soon Green- Fleet largely intact, retirement not expected soon Blue- New fleet, has cars needed to be delivered R32 - Budd Company (1964-present; refurbished-1988) R32s are divided into Phase I, Phase II and GE-Rebuilt cars. They are distinct from other cars in that mismatched pairs are common (i.e. 3381-3832 instead of 3381-3380). This is due to car renumbering from accidents, and different cars being overhauled together. R32 3659 and 3668 were renumbered to 3348 and 3669, respectively. Former R32 3669 was scrapped. R32s are based out of Pitkin Yard (A, C, Rockaway S) and Jamaica Yard (E, F, G, R, V). They run on the C, on the F during rush hours and weekends and on the R line during rush hours. One set of R32s runs on the E line. As the fleet is retiring, cars 3352-3353 have been preserved for the Transit Museum. All Phase IIrebuilt and GE-rebuilt cars have been retired, and have all been reefed or stored for use as work cars. A few Phase 1 cars have been retired as well. Only Phase I cars remain in service, which will all be retired by 2010. These cars are marked to be reefed (by a red or white diamond on the window) and will be prepared for reefing shortly. R44 - St. Louis Car Company (1971-present; refurbished-1990) Prior to refurbishment, R44s had side rollsigns, a blue stripe along the car body and a “raccoon mask” in the front of A cars. The blue stripe was painted over and the raccoon mask was done away with during the cars' refurbishment. Additionally, the side rollsigns were replaced with LCD destination signage. The R44s are the first cars to have full width cabs and the door chime. Since their advent, all cars after this order have both full width cabs and the door chime. The R44s are the first 75 foot cars in the entire system. Due to clearance constraints they could not be used for service on the BMT lines based out at East New York. This restriction applies to all 75 foot car order that would be ordered. They are linked in 4-car sets, in ABBA form. A-cars are even numbers, and B cars are odd. 64 cars are also used for the Staten Island Railway. Due to structural damage on several cars, one R44 set consists of 5270-52495271-5284. R44s were previously numbered 100-435, 436-466 (even). They were renumbered around the time of their refurbishment. R44s are based out of Pitkin Yard (A, C, Rockaway S) and run on the A line and the Rockaway S. R46 - Pullman Standard Rail Company (1975-present; refurbished-1989) When the R46s were refurbished, the trucks were removed, the blue stripe and the “raccoon mask” were removed and the former side rollsigns were replaced by LCD destination signs. They are currently undergoing SMS (Scheduled Maintenance Service). During this process they are having their HVAC units replaced, their car ends painted, and their windows replaced along with receiving vandal-resistant screens. Some cars are receiving new black floors. R46s are linked in 4-car sets, in ABBA form. A-cars are even numbers, and B-cars are odd. Though there are 752 cars now, there were initially 754 cars. The other two cars were scrapped due to accidents. Car numbers were originally: 500-1227, 1228-1278 (even); but were renumbered around the time of their refurbishment. R62- Kawasaki Heavy Industries (1983-present) R62A- Bombardier (1984-present) The contracts are known as R62 and R62A, depending on the company that built them. The R62s were the first stainless steel cars on the IRT lines. They are linked in 5-car sets, with the highest car in the set ending with 5 or 0, and the lowest ending in a 1 or 6. R62s are based out of Livonia Yard (3) and run on the 3 line. One train of R62s may occasionally see service on the 4 line. R62As are linked in 5-car sets. R62A cars 1901-2155 (255 cars) are singles and run mostly on the 7. A 7 train runs a 5-car set on the south end and 6 single cars on the north end.
