The Boston Breakers is an American professional soccer club that is based in the Boston, Massachusetts that participates in Women’s Professional Soccer. The Breakers were originally founded in 2001 as a member of the defunct Women’s United Soccer Association. Since 2009, the Breakers have played their home games at Harvard Stadium, on the campus of Harvard University.
History
The original Boston Breakers played in the Women’s United Soccer Association from 2001 to 2003. The team won the regular season championship in 2003 with a record of 10-4-7. However, the Breakers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Washington Freedom in the semifinal round. The formation of Women’s Professional Soccer was announced on September 4, 2007, and it was also announced on that day that a franchise had been awarded to Boston. The Boston Breakers were officially unveiled on October 26, 2008. U.S. Women’s National Team players Kristine Lilly, Angela Hucles and Heather Mitts were the first players in Breakers history when they were allocated to the team on September 16, 2008.[1]. The team played its first WPS game on April 5, 2009, against FC Gold Pride, a 2-1 loss. The first goal in club history scored by English national team player Kelly Smith.
