                              DBA Doctoral Study Rubric
                                           September 2010

The purpose of the rubric is to guide DBA students and DBA Doctoral Study supervisory committees
as they work together to develop high quality proposals and Doctoral Study research. The committee
will use the rubric to provide on-going and flexible evaluation and re-evaluation of the proposal and
DBA Doctoral Study drafts as they are developed. The University Research Reviewer (URR) who
approves the proposal/DBA Doctoral Study on behalf of the University, will also use this rubric to
communicate feedback and any required revisions.

In the writing process, use the rubric as a suggested outline for the DBA Doctoral Study and as a
basis for feedback on early drafts.

Before the Proposal Oral Conference or DBA Doctoral Study Oral Conference, each member of
the committee should complete the rubric (Section 1-2 for the proposal, Sections 1-3 for the DBA
Doctoral Study) and submit it to the committee chairperson. These rubrics (not necessarily with a
consensus achieved) will then be shared with the URR who will also complete a rubric. The URR
forwards his or her rubric to the Office of Student Research Support (with a copy to the chair), along
with a summary letter, for distribution to the student and committee members, using the
dba.docstudy@waldenu.edu address.

After the Proposal Oral Conference or DBA Doctoral Study Oral Conference, and once the
student has completed any requested revisions to the manuscript, the committee will review it and
make any needed modifications to the ratings in the consensus rubric. A consensus rubric should
then be submitted by the chair to dba.docstudy@waldenu.edu.

About consensus: For the final copy of the proposal or DBA Doctoral Study, there must be
unanimous agreement by the DBA Doctoral Study supervisory committee before the student proceeds
to the next step in the process.

Using the rating scale and comment areas: A 5-level rating scale is used for scoring each of the
quality indicators in the rubric. This provides a summary overview of the relatively strong and weak
areas of the document. Ratings of 3 or above are considered satisfactory, while ratings of 1 or 2 do
not achieve minimal standards for passing. A Not Applicable (NA) category is also used when a
component of the rubric is not relevant to the manuscript.

A space for comments is provided for each section and sub-section component. This space can be
used to provide specific guidance for revision, and it should also be used to praise strong work or
noteworthy improvements. More extensive notes can be submitted as a separate attachment or as a
marked-up copy of the manuscript. There is also a column to indicate the page or pages where
revisions are needed and a column for the chair to identify how the concerns were addressed in the
revision.

Assign ratings using the shaded fields in this section for each relevant quality indicator for
the proposal or DBA Doctoral Study. Complete either the qualitative or quantitative
elements for Section 2-B, depending on which is most appropriate. For proposal rubrics,
complete Section 1 and Section 2-A. For DBA Doctoral Study rubrics, complete all Section
and sub-section elements . (You may wish to simply add new ratings for Sections 2 and
Section 3 to your prior ratings for the proposal.)

the quality indicators.

4 = Acceptable as written; All crucial elements are included and adequately described.

3 = Approved, although revisions are strongly suggested in one or more important
component(s) that are of markedly lesser quality than the rest of the quality indicators in
this section.

2 = Must be revised and resubmitted because one or more essential component(s) are not
satisfactorily described.

1 = Must be revised and resubmitted because one or more required element(s) are

    3. The review of related research and literature
compares and contrasts different points of view and the
relationship of the study to previous res earch and
    findings.
    4. Concise summaries of the literature define the most
important aspects of the theory for understanding
improved business practice and which will be examined
or tested for quantitative studies or substantiate the
rationale or theoretical framework for the study that will
provide the context for understanding and explaining the
elements for improved business practice (for qualitative
    studies).
    5. There is literature-based description of the research
variables (quantitative studies), or potential themes and
perceptions to be ex plored (qualitative studies).
    6. The content of the review is drawn from acceptable
peer-reviewed journals or sound academic journals or
there is a justification for using other sources. A good
study should use approximately 100 + peer reviewed
references with 80 to 85% being published within the
    last 3 – 5 years.
    7. Literature related to the research design and
    method(s) is reviewed.
    8. Literature related to the use of differing methodologies
to investigat e the outcomes of interest is reviewed.
    9. The methods review is an integrated, critical essay on
the most relevant and current published knowledge on
the topic. The review is organized around major ideas or
themes that will inform the researc h project.
10/ The preliminary research design is presented and a
detailed argument as to why and how the research
design is appropriate to the business problem/research
    questions is pres ented.

6. Population and Sampling -- This section (a) describes the
population from which the sample will be drawn, (b)
describes and defends the sampling method including the
sampling frame used, using appropriate methodology
references and concepts, (c) describes and defends the
sample size using appropriate met hodology references
and conc epts, (d) describes the eligibility criteria for study
participants, and (e) describes and explains the
relevance of characteristics of the selected sample.
Criteria for selecting participants are specified and are
appropriate to the study. There is a justification for the
number of participants (in accordance with the qualitative
design/approach chosen) which is balanced with depth of
inquiry. The fewer the participants the deeper the inquiry
per individual. If appropriat e, the rationale for specific
types of subjects/representation in sampling is provided.
