- News of the Day
- Debate Wrap-up
JUSTIN: HEY, GUYS I'M JUSTIN FINCH AND IT’S MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29TH
2008. CHANNEL ONE NEWS STARTS RIGHT NOW.
JUSTIN: OK, THE CHANNEL ONE NEWS TEAM HAS BEEN FOLLOWING YOUR HEADLINES
AND LET'S SEE WHAT THEY HAVE FOR US. ALI WHAT’S GOING ON?
ALI: WELL, IT WAS A LONG WEEKEND OF NEGOTIATIONS FOR CONGRESSIONAL
LEADERS TRYING TO REACH AN AGREEMENT ON THE 700 BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT
ALI: THE ORIGINAL PLAN WAS FOR THE GOVERNMENT TO BUY UP BAD MORTGAGE
DEBT WITH TAXPAYER MONEY TO UNCLOG THE CREDIT MARKETS
ALI: A TENTATIVE AGREEMENT WAS REACHED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON, BUT THIS
ISN'T THE SAME BAILOUT PLAN ORIGINALLY PROPOSED; CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE
TO ACCOMMODATE BOTH DEMOCRATS AND REPUBLICANS.
(SOT: Sen. John Kerry) “We've strengthened this significantly. It's a
distasteful vote, but it's important for our country sometimes to take
that kind of hard vote.”
ALI: ONE CHANGE WOULD REPORTEDLY ALLOW THE GOVERNMENT TO INSURE SOME
HOME LOANS INSTEAD OF BUYING ALL THE BAD LOANS, AND THAT WOULD SAVE
ALI: NOW ALL OF THE DETAILS HAVEN’T BEEN ANNOUNCED YET BUT WILL MOST
LIKELY BE RELEASED TODAY. BOTH THE HOUSE AND SENATE MAY EVEN VOTE AS
EARLY AS TODAY.
ALI: NOW NEGOTIATORS WANTED EVERYONE TO BE ABLE TO AGREE ON THE TERMS
OF THE DEAL SO THAT WHEN IT GOES TO A VOTE, IT PASSES ON ITS FIRST TIME
JUSTIN: SO WE ARE GETTING CLOSER TO IT RIGHT? OK, ALI, KP WHAT’S UP?
KRISTEN: WELL, THERE WAS A GIANT LEAP FORWARD FOR CHINA'S DEVELOPING
SPACE PROGRAM THIS WEEKEND.
KRISTEN: ON SATURDAY, A CHINESE ASTRONAUT PERFORMED THE COUNTRY'S FIRST
EVER SPACEWALK. DURING HIS THIRTEEN MINUTES OUTSIDE, THE ASTRONAUT TOOK
A MOMENT TO WAVE A CHINESE FLAG IN CELEBRATION.
KRISTEN: AFTER 68 HOURS IN SPACE, THE CAPSULE CARRYING THE ASTRONAUTS
RETURNED TO EARTH YESTERDAY. NOW THAT THIS MILESTONE IS IN THE HISTORY
BOOKS, CHINA WILL TURN ITS ATTENTION TO ASSEMBLING ITS OWN SPACE
KRISTEN: NOW CHINA MAY EVEN TRY PUTTING A MAN ON THE MOON IN THE NEXT
DECADE. AND THAT’S SOMETHING ONLY THE U.S. HAS ACCOMPLISHED UNTIL NOW.
JUSTIN: ALRIGHT KP, THANKS. CHARISSE WHAT’S UP?
CHARISSE: SO PAUL NEWMAN, AN OSCAR WINNING ACTOR AND PHILANTHROPIST
DIED THIS WEEKEND AT THE AGE OF 83.
CHARISSE: PAUL NEWMAN WAS THE EPITOME OF COOL. KNOWN FOR HIS BLUE EYES
AND GOOD LOOKS, NEWMAN WAS IN MANY CLASSIC HOLLYWOOD MOVIES. HIS FIRST
MAJOR ROLE WAS PLAYING A BOXER IN "SOMEBODY UP THERE LIKES ME".
CHARISSE: NEWMAN CEMENTED HIS STAR STATUS IN MOVIES LIKE "BUTCH CASSIDY
AND THE SUNDANCE KID".
CHARISSE: NEWMAN'S OTHER PASSION WAS HELPING OTHERS. IN 1982 NEWMAN
STARTED SELLING HIS HOMEMADE SALAD DRESSING. NOW THE NEWMAN'S OWN BRAND
IS A HEALTH FOOD EMPIRE, WITH ALL THE PROFITS GOING TO CHARITY.
CHARISSE: NEWMAN FOUNDED CAMPS FOR KIDS WITH CANCER AND THE SCOTT
NEWMAN CENTER TO PUBLICIZE THE DANGERS OF ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE.
CHARISSE: AFTER 65 FILMS AND 50 YEARS IN THE MOVIE BUSINESS NEWMAN
DECIDED TO RETIRE IN 2007.
CHARISSE: NEWMAN WAS ONE OF THE LAST GREAT STARS OF HIS ERA. HE'LL
DEFINITELY BE MISSED.
JUSTIN: HE DID SO MUCH TOO. HANNAH, WHAT DO YOU HAVE DOWN THERE?
HANNAH: WELL, I HAVE SOME REALLY COOL VIDEO TO SHOW YOU GUYS OF A MAN
IN EUROPE THAT SOME ARE CALLING ROCKETMAN!
HANNAH: ON FRIDAY, YVES ROSSY, A SWISS ADVENTURER AND PILOT, FLEW OVER
THE ENGLISH CHANNEL USING A JET POWERED WING!
HANNAH: WITH FOUR JET TURBINES ATTACHED TO AN EIGHT FOOT LONG WING ON
HIS BACK, ROCKETMAN STEERS BY TURNING HIS HEAD LEFT AND RIGHT.
HANNAH: ROSSY CRUISED AT SPEEDS OVER 125 MILES AN HOUR WITH ONLY A
HELMET AND FLIGHT SUIT PROTECTING HIS BODY. FLYING LIKE AN EAGLE, ROSSY
TOOK THE SAME PATH AS FRENCH AVIATOR LOUIS BLERIOT, WHO WAS THE FIRST
PERSON TO CROSS THE ENGLISH CHANNEL IN A PLANE 99 YEARS AGO.
HANNAH: AND ROSSY ISN'T DONE YET, NEXT HE WANTS TO TRY FLYING OVER THE
JUSTIN: ALRIGHT, NICE WORK ON THOSE HEADLINES GUYS. BUT LET’S SWITCH IT
UP FOR A SECOND HERE. IT'S MONDAY AND THAT MEANS IT’S TIME FOR OUR PLAY
OF THE WEEK.
JUSTIN: NOW WATCH THIS TAKE DOWN BY GEORDAN SPEILLAR. LET'S SEE THAT
AGAIN, ONE MORE TIME.
JUSTIN: THINK YOU'VE GOT A BETTER MOVE? WELL, WE WANT TO SEE IT. HEAD
OVER TO CHANNEL ONE DOT COM AND UPLOAD YOUR VIDEO AND WE JUST MIGHT
SHOW IT ON THE AIR.
JUSTIN: SENATORS JOHN MCCAIN AND BARACK OBAMA WENT AT IT FRIDAY NIGHT
IN THE FIRST OF THREE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES. AND THEY TACKLED EVERYTHING
FROM THE WALL STREET BAILOUT DOWN TO THE WARS IN IRAQ AND AFGHANISTAN.
AND HERE'S HOW IT ALL WENT DOWN.
JESSICA: OBAMA VERSUS MCCAIN ROUND ONE. THIS DEBATE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
FOCUSED ON FOREIGN POLICY BUT GIVEN THE NATION'S CURRENT FINANCIAL
CRISIS MODERATOR JIM LEHRER'S FIRST QUESTION WAS OVER THE ECONOMY.
(SOT: OBAMA) “This is a final verdict on 8 yrs of failed economic
policies promoted by George Bush, supported by Senator McCain.”
JESSICA: MCCAIN HOWEVER PORTRAYED HIMSELF AS AN AGENT OF CHANGE AND NOT
ANOTHER GEORGE BUSH.
(SOT: McCain) “We've got to start also holding people accountable and
we've got to reward people who succeed.”
JESSICA: NEITHER WOULD SAY WHAT THEY'D GIVE UP TO MAKE UP FOR THE
PROPOSED SEVEN HUNDRED BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT.
(SOT: McCain) “Well, how about a spending freeze on everything but
defense, veterans affairs and entitlement programs?”
(SOT: Lehrer) “Would you go for that?”
(SOT: Obama) “The problem with a spending freeze is you're using a
hatchet where you need a scalpel.”
JESSICA: TIME NOW FOR FOREIGN POLICY WHERE THE TWO HAD THEIR SHARPEST
EXCHANGES, ESPEICALLY OVER IRAQ.
(SOT: Obama) “John, you like to pretend like the war started in 2007.
You talk about the surge, the war started in 2003 and at the time when
the war started, you said it was going to be quick and easy. You said
we knew where the weapons of mass destruction were, you’re wrong.”
(SOT: McCain) “I’m afraid Senator Obama doesn’t understand the
difference between a tactic and a strategy, and I honestly don’t
believe that Senator Obama has the knowledge or experience and has made
the wrong judgments in a number of areas.”
JESSICA: THEY TANGLED OVER RUSSIA, PAKISTAN AND OBAMA'S WILLINGNESS TO
NEGOTIATE WITH IRAN'S PRESIDENT.
(SOT: McCain) “Ahmadinejad who is now in New York talking about the
extermination of the state of Israel, of wiping Israel off the map, and
we're going to sit down without precondition across the table.”
(SOT: Obama) “It doesn’t mean that you invite them over for tea one
day. What it means is that we don’t do what we've been doing which is
to say until you agree to do exactly what we say we won’t have direct
contacts with you.”
JESSICA: EVEN AS THE CANDIDATES WERE SHAKING HANDS, THEIR AIDES WERE
PUTTING TOGETHER INSTANT ATTACK ADS.
(SOT: ) “Barack Obama, playing politics, risking lives, not ready to
(SOT: ) “Number of minutes in debate, 90. Number of times John McCain
mentioned the middle class, o.”
JESSICA: SO WHO WON OR LOST? WELL, ANALYSTS SAY THERE WAS NO CLEAR
WINNER, BOTH SCORED HIGH POINTS FOR KNOWING THE INS AND OUTS OF FOREIGN
POLICY AND HOLDING THEIR OWN IN A SERIOUS DEBATE.
JESSICA: THE NEXT ONE WILL BE BETWEEN THE VICE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
JOE BIDEN AND SARAH PALIN.
JESSICA: JESSICA KUMARI, CHANNEL ONE NEWS
JUSTIN: MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON THIS ELECTION SEASON, AND
CHECK OUT OUR ONE VOTE FEATURE AT CHANNEL ONE DOT COM.
JUSTIN: SO WE JUST GOT A DEBATE WRAP UP FROM JESS. BUT, DID THE
CANDIDATES SCORE ANY POINTS WITH YOUNG VOTERS?
JUSTIN: NBC'S LUKE RUSSERT HAS BEEN FOLLOWING THE YOUTH VOTE AND HE
WATCHED THE DEBATES WITH STUDENTS AT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY TO SEE WHAT
(SOT: Luke Russert) “We're here at Georgetown University in Washington
DC. We're here with a joint meeting between the Young Republicans and
the Young Democrats right before the first presidential debate between
Senators Barack Obama and John McCain.”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “How do you gauge your candidate's performance so
(SOT: ) “I think he's been a commanding presence, I think he's talked
about the issues with a lot of insight and eloquence. I think Senator
McCain looks a little tired and disengaged tonight.”
(SOT: McCain) “And I've been around a little while.”
(SOT: ) “Yea you have!”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “Tell me why your candidate, John McCain, is
(SOT: ) “Senator McCain is showing that he tends to face the financial
crisis with a strategy based on growth instead of the expansion of the
(SOT: Luke Russert) “Are you cool with the debate being on a Friday
night, would you rather be partying or is this kind of just a chill
good thing to do on a Friday?”
(SOT: ) “This is pretty chill, its pretty interesting you know. This
is stuff that affects everything around us so it’s pretty cool.”
(SOT: ) “This is my first election so I'm really excited about it.”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “The trend that we're seeing here is how many kids,
this is their first time actually watching a presidential debate from
start to finish.”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “The debate just ended, after seeing tonight's
debate are you leaning one way or the another?”
(SOT: ) “I tend to lean towards McCain on national defense issues, the
economy I'm still kind of up in the air. I do think the debate helped
clarify some of the issues.”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “Why do you think the crowd moaned when McCain
mentioned his POW status?”
(SOT: ) “Well, its like I was saying, its like that typical shtick that
he has. I mean every time he mentions Ronald Reagan or he mentions his
POW experience its like things people have already heard before. He's
not really saying anything different. He's just establishing an image
he already has.”
(SOT: ) “Several times Obama declared that McCain was right and I just
feel like that kind of shows that McCain defiantly won and had much
better points than Obama could and just articulated what he was going
to do as president much better.”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “Who are you leaning towards after seeing tonight's
(SOT: ) “I don't know I'm still kind of independent on that one. I have
issues on both sides. But right now I'm Independent.”
(SOT: Luke Russert) “So you're going to wait till the last minute
(SOT: ) “Basically, that's what I plan to do.”
(SOT: ) “I think largely it’s that this country has awakened to what
happens when you disengage from the process and when people care more
and get involved in the way that they are, we've got a tremendous crowd
here today. That's how you can actually get young voters, not just
voting, cause they think its cool, but really into what's going on.”
JUSTIN: THAT'S IT FOR US FOR TODAY, BUT WE'LL SEE YOU BACK HERE
TOMORROW. BEFORE WE GO, HERE’S ONE MORE THING FOR YOU TO CHECK OUT.
JUSTIN: IN SOME PARTS OF THE COUNTRY, PEOPLE ARE VOTING FOR THEIR
PRESIDENTIAL PICKS WITH THEIR STOMACHS.
JUSTIN: THE "MCCAIN" A 10 OUNCE CHILI BURGER, A NOD TO HIS HOME STATE
JUSTIN: "OBAMA" IS A BURGER DONE UP WITH LOTS OF RELISH CHICAGO STYLE,
FOR HIS HOMETOWN.
(SOT: Jerry Sorkin) “The idea of a hot dog on top of a burger was a
pretty good one to me.”
JUSTIN: AND A VIRGINIA BAKERY IS OFFERING ELEPHANTS AND DONKEYS FOR
(SOT: Josh Short) “Some people get pretty jealous when they see that
their candidate is behind so they buy them up to catch them up.”
JUSTIN: MAYBE NOT THE MOST SCIENTIFIC POLLING, BUT ONE THAT VOTERS ARE
