Project aims

The aim of this project was to reformulate existing resources into a learning guide for
students in the first year units 200237 Mathematics for Engineers 1 and 200189
Concepts of Mathematics in a Web CT/Campus Edition framework.

Actual outcomes achieved

The existing resources were reformulated and presented in a HTML document. (HTML
is a format, similar to say WORD format). This document then became the ‘learning
guide’ as required by the new Assessment Policy for level 1 units. This policy was
implemented in 2009.

The original presentation in HTML format was not well received by students. Also,
making even minor changes proved frustrating. Thus, I have reverted back to the
‘learning module’ format as provided by vUWS. This format is much more user-friendly
that the HTML format, for both students and designers.

Comments

The project has been successful in that I have been able to develop resources which
assist students in their learning of mathematics. However, significant improvements in
the failure rates in 200237 Mathematics for Engineers 1 have not occurred as a direct
result of this activity. This may indicate, that the mathematics problems experienced by
students relates more to their background and lack of mathematical skills, rather than
their understanding of what is required of them in a first-year mathematics unit.

The lessons learned from this project will help in the design of future vUWS sites for
units that I coordinate. Also I intend to share my experiences with the academic staff
from my School, particularly if they are interested in setting up on-line learning guides
for students in their units.

Evaluation of the project

SFU and SFT data should be available for Autumn session 2009, soon. In Spring
session 2009, it is planned to survey students specifically to determine which format
(HTML or learning module) they prefer. This will be possible as most of the students
enrolling in 200237 in Spring session will have attempted 200237 in Autumn session.

Scalability of the project

I intend to use the format in all units that I am unit coordinator for.

Sustainability of project:

Once the vUWS site has been designed, it is very easy and simple to maintain.

Project implementation issues

There were no implementation issues.

                                                                      Final Report P7133 Page 3 of 4
Dissemination of project outcomes:

A presentation was given at one of the HOP forums held in 2008. Informal discussions
have also been held with colleagues in my School, especially at the School Retreat
held in September 2008, when learning guides were being developed for level 1 (and
4) units.

Other comments

Further work will entail developing my skills in making the vUWS site more interactive.
I also intend to use more e-learning technologies such as podcasts, wikis etc where
appropriate.

SECTION 2: DETAILED REPORT, RELATED DOCUMENTS AND
MEDIA

The reformulation of the resources and the inclusion of suitable learning objects
became the learning guide for the Autumn session of 200237 Mathematics for
Engineers 1. This is available from the UWS repository.
