Online at the university: starter's guide for new students:
• Operating system of choice: Windows, Mac, Linux
• Open your web browser (Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, Internet
Explorer...), no VPN needed
• Enter the web address : http://minerva.UGent.be and
click on „English‟ for the english version
• Log in: enter the user name and password of your UGent account
When you login for the first time this message will appear and
you will receive a confirmation of your registration by email
Edit your profile
Add your picture and change your language
Click on “Cursussen 2007-2008” or ”Courses 2007-2008” (at the top
or at the right) to register for courses and infosites
The official study programmes in English can be found at
Write down your course codes (look in the right column of a study
programme) if necessary. 5
Your study program is selected (“My study programme”). If nothing is
selected or if it is wrong, you can select the correct study programme in
Minerva by clicking the button “You can change your study programme
here if your study programme is incorrect”.
IMPORTANT: for official changes in curricula you need to contact the

When items are changed or added, icons will appear next to
the course title. Click on the icon to go directly to the tool.

In the agenda tool you find all date-related information of the course.
The main objective of the announcement tool is to distribute
important information concerning the course, comparable with the
announcement boards in your faculty. Also assignments etc. can be
announced this way. It is recommended to check regularly in order
to stay informed about the course development.
In the documents tool you can find course material. It is not the objective
that the syllabus is presented here, but (additional) information such as ppt
presentations, extra literature, etc. These documents can be presented in

The wiki tool is used for collaboration. You and your
fellow students create and adapt wiki documents
concerning the course directly on-line.
In the forum tool, the lecturer can add several forums and start several
„threads‟ with several topics. By clicking on a „thread‟ you get an overview
of all topics.
Communication about different topics between course administrator and
student and among students is possible.
The forum can be listed in categories to maintain a good overview.
The tests tool can contains simple exercises with different types of
The „Student Publications‟ tool can be used to publish your
student contributions to everyone in this course.
Both you and the lecturer can exchange files using the dropbox tool.
Files can be sent back and forth from the course administrator drop
box to the student drop box.
Sometimes you will be asked to answer short
simple multiple choice questions using the poll tool.
The Curios tool gives access to on-line tests, surveys, sophisticated
exercises, … prepared by the lecturers
The „Course Description‟ displays general and didactical
information concerning the course.
You get an overview of the users of this course:
• Who is registered for the course
• The role of each user in the course
• The groups a user belongs to
• Click on a name to get the email address, …
In the groups tool you can register or unregister for the groups
in the course. A group is a set of users with a separate space

The reservations tool is used for different types of reservations
