This can be the President of the Senate (the Vice President of the United States), the President pro tempore, or someone designated by the President pro tempore. Typically, a junior senator of the majority party presides. During impeachment trials of the President of the United States, the Chief Justice of the United States is the presiding officer. The presiding officer is always addressed as "Mr./Madame President," except during impeachment trials, or during joint sessions where the President of the United States is present. For example, the President of the United States will address the Vice President, although serving in his or her capacity as President of the Senate, as "Mr. (or Madam) Vice President".
