This was the first season of the new agreement with the Athletic Association of Western Universities to send their champion after the Pacific Coast Conference had dissolved in 1959. The Big Ten was not part of any agreement, but the Big Ten champion Minnesota was invited to play in the 1961 Rose Bowl game, because they were the number 1 team in the nation. The Great Rose Bowl Hoax happened during the halftime of this game. Students from nearby Caltech altered the plans for the Washington card stunts, which spelled CALTECH instead of HUSKIES and showed the Caltech Beaver mascot instead of the Washington Husky. The prank received national attention, as the game was broadcast to an estimated 30 million viewers across the United States by NBC.[2] One author wrote, "Few college pranks can be said to be more grandly conceived, carefully planned, flawlessly executed, and publicly dramatic" than the Great Rose Bowl Hoax.[3][4] Teams See also: 1960 college football season, Pacific Coast Conference, and Pacific-10 Conference The Pacific Coast Conference, from which the West Coast Rose Bowl representative was taken, had dissolved following a pay for play scandal. A new conference, the Athletic Association of Western Universities, known as the Big Five, formed in 1959 with Cal, Stanford, USC, UCLA and Washington. For scheduling, Oregon, Oregon State, and Washington State dropped UCLA and USC, with the exception being Oregon state at USC. The other AAWU teams kept their former PCC members on the schedule. The PCC agreement with the Rose bowl had been dissolved for the 1959 season, but the winner among all former members of the PCC was invited, so Washington had won the 1960 Rose Bowl. For the 1960 season, the AAWU contracted a new agreement with the Rose Bowl. The University of Washington Huskies defeated the University of Minnesota Golden Gophers 17-7. The most memorable story of the game was the card stunts at halftime. University of Washington Huskies The Washington Huskies defeated the College of the Pacific, and former PCC member Idaho. They lost a very close 14-15 game against Navy. The Midshipmen would later finish 8-1 and play Missouri in the 1961 Orange Bowl. They won at Stanford and beat UCLA 10-8. The Huskies continued on with a PCC schedule playing Oregon and Oregon State, winning both games. A November 5th game at USC was the deciding factor in the Rose Bowl race with the Huskies blanking the Trojans 34-0. The Huskies beat Cal to win the first AAWU championship outright. The final game was the Apple Cup where the Huskies narrowly escaped the Washington State Cougars with an 8-7 win. The Washington Huskies marching band performed second, during which the card stunts began. The Washington card section was on the East side of the Rose Bowl stadium, facing the press box and television cameras. The NBC national television broadcast was trained on the band and card stunts. At halftime on January 2, the Washington card stunt was executed as the Caltech students had hoped. NBC cameras panned to the section raising the flip-cards as they uneventfully displayed the first eleven designs. The twelfth design modified the design of a Husky into that of a Beaver, Caltech’s mascot, but was subtle enough that the audience did not notice. The thirteenth stunt, which called for the depiction of the word "Washington" in script to gradually appear from left to right, starting with "W", ran backwards, with "n" appearing first.[2] Other sources say that the routine intended to spell out, "HUSKIES," but that it had been altered to spell out "SEIKSUH."[4] Regardless, many dismissed this as a simple mistake. The fourteenth design, however, was an unmistakable prank. "CALTECH" was displayed in big block letters on a white background. The announcers and the stadium fell silent for several moments, only to subsequently break into laughter at the prospect of someone actually spending the time to perform such a prank. As the Washington band marched off the field, the cheerleaders did University of Minnesota Gophers The Gophers came to the Rose Bowl as the #1 team in the nation.[6] The Gophers were led by Sandy Stephens, the first AfricanAmerican All-American quarterback. The Gophers had an early 26-14 win at number 12 Nebraska. They shut out both Indiana and Northwestern. They had a 10-0 shutout of the Wolverines at Michigan stadium to win the Little Brown Jug. A win over Kansas state set up a #3 Minnesota at #1 Iowa in one of the most notable Floyd of Rosedale rivalry games. Minnesota won 27-10 in the deciding game for the Big Ten championship. The Gophers were ranked #1 when they lost to Purdue the next week. But a 26 to 14 win over Wisconsin on NCAA television put them back at #1 to finish the season. The Gophers were tied with Iowa in the standings. The final AP poll was one of the closest ever with Minnesota with 17 and 1/2 #1 votes, Mississippi with 16 #1 votes, and Iowa with 12 and 1/2 #1 votes. Game summary The weather was sunny. Washington wore their home purple jerseys, gold pants and gold helmets. Minnesota wore white away jerseys with Maroon and gold shoulder stripes and white helmets.
