RSL Mens Bowls Whilst our year or season is not quite over this year is possibly the most successful in the Club’s history. Both division 2 and 3 are placed second on the Campaspe Pennant Competition ladder, and with only one game to go both will make it to the finals play offs. Division 4 while struggling to attain much success during the season showed great team spirit and sportsmanship. During the season we lost two of our members in Neill McMillan and Peter Spalding. The members felt very strongly about this loss and attended both funerals as a mark of respect to two great friends. We are grateful to the RSL Club for its co-operation and support during the year, it is always very much appreciated by the Club Committee and members. We have worked very hard to stage tournaments at the Club and currently the Easter and June Tournaments have the committee working diligently to ensure their success. Tournaments are harder to run and attract visiting bowlers as other bowling clubs, like us due to the economic climate are endeavoring to hold tournaments of their own and many on the same dates as ours. We are conscious of the great work put in by the Green Keeper Tom Maw and many visiting clubs comment on the standard of our greens, of course this is yet another area we say a big thank you to the RSL Club. We look forward to a continuing working relationship with your board and take this opportunity to wish the club every success in the forthcoming trading year.
Yours faithfully Neville Austin Club President
RSL/West Cricket Club Report The RSL/West CC affiliated three teams in the Deniliquin & District Cricket Association for the 2008/2009 season. At the time of writing it is pleasing to report that all three teams look like qualifying for finals in their respective grades. A Grade under the guidance of newly appointed coach Tim Hillier and skipper Trevor Briggs have had a sound season with the major highlight so far being crowned One Day Champions just prior to Christmas after a tight tussle with the strong Hay team. Stalwarts Brian King and Jamie Tasker along with youngsters Peter Lewis, Scott Howard and Mitch O’Brien form part of a group of a very keen and enthusiastic cricketers. We wish them well in the upcoming finals series. B Grade have had a much improved season with developing players Brendan Hope, Mark Panton, Matt Dowling and Ted Eason being well supported by cameo performances from Alan Dashwood, Brian Jennings and Sam Lloyd. It will be a great achievement if they are able to hang on and qualify for some finals action. The Under 16’s led by skipper Jack Danckert have also enjoyed a successful season. We have a large squad of 18 players and the main focus has been on skill development and participation. In fact we see our junior development program as an integral component in the future of our cricket club.
Youngsters Brock Close, Brenton Loudon and Lachlan Macdonald continue to improve and along with the experience of Danckert, Blair Whelan, Mitch O’Brien and Matt Dowling should give the strong Town outfit a run for their money in the Grand Final. Highlights for the season to date have been hattricks to Loudon and Macdonald and Riverina selection by Mitch O’Brien and Brenton Loundon. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the parents who have assisted with the Friday night raffles, coaching or scoring this season. Your help has been greatly appreciated. Special mention to Peter Rae (Treasurer), Tim Hillier (A Grade Coach), Stuart Loudon (U16’s co-coach and Mr & Mrs Leo Briggs Snr for their catering efforts. The Cricket Club always receives wonderful support from the RSL Club and I would personally like to thank Tony Smith, The RSL Board and staff for their continued support.

RSL Fishing Club Report At the beginning of this year the Fishing Club found it hard with lack of water. But with determination, we managed to have our monthly outings on the river, the attendance of camping families at these were down, maybe the lack of water once again had something to do with it. Also making it hard to decide to have our Classic, with water rising in November, the committee decided to hold the Classic. After a lot of quick preparations the Classic game together. Fisherman from S.A, N.T and Qld, from all over VIC, NSW. There were 536 entries, pleased to see many Junior entries. The weather was pleasant, making the Classic more like a monster picnic. I would like to thank my committee for the help through the year and being able to make the Classic such a success. To the towns people and business houses for their donations in such hard times, my sincere thanks.

RSL Squash Club In 2008 the Deniliquin RSL Squash Club had a successful year. The club ran a short summer competition and two longer competitions through the year. Competition Squash is played on Monday nights with 48 regular players and most Thursday nights a number of these players participate in social squash. Along with the competitions, Club Championships were also played, A Grade Men’s Champion Tony Crandell defeated Peter Thompson to take the title, and Vicki Brunker is the current A Grade Women’s Champion. We were privileged to have Tom Sparks from the Goulburn Valley Squash Association referee the Championship’s Finals matches and also demonstrate how to play squash at an elite level. Recently, the Squash Courts have undergone major refurbishment and repainting and are nearly finished, making the RSL Squash Courts at Deniliquin among the best in the region. The Deniliquin RSL Squash Club would like to thank the Deniliquin RSL Club for their support of our sport, without this generous support squash would not be as accessible or affordable.
