It can be accessed from Cardiff Bay railway station, via Water Bus (from the city centre or Penarth) or by various Cardiff Bus services, particularly the BayCar service. Mermaid Quay is a shopping and leisure complex in Cardiff Bay, Cardiff, Wales. It opened in August 1999 and was at the centre of the regeneration of the Bay by the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation (CBDC). Controversially the Welsh Industrial and Maritime Museum was demolished to make way for the development.[1] The CBDC decided to close the museum in 1998 before a new location could be found. In June 1999, the Welsh Office rejected any criticism for the demolition of the museum by the Welsh Affairs Select Committee. MPs criticised the multi-million pound deal to create the Mermaid Quay shopping centre between the CBDC and the National Museums and Galleries of Wales. The museum had held exhibits illustrating the industrial and maritime history of Wales.[1] It is shaped by the many restaurants, cafés, bars, shops, entertainment venues and the marina.
