Dear Parents or Carers,

                       WELCOME TO GREAT SMEATON C.P. SCHOOL

This information has been prepared in order to ensure that your child‟s entry into school is made
as easy as possible. We encourage parents to take an active interest in the school and its
activities and to work with us to help your child to achieve their very best.


The school is situated in the village of Great Smeaton half way between Northallerton and
Darlington on the A167. It is a Community Primary School taking children aged 4+ to 11.

The present building opened in 1972 and consists of three classrooms and a kitchen around a
central hall. From the front of the school there is a panoramic view over the Vale of Mowbray,
stretching from the Pennines in the west to the North York Moors in the east. Our site also
includes a large playing field, playground, adventure play area and nature area with pond.

The school‟s catchment area covers the villages of Entercommon, Hornby, Girsby, Great
Smeaton, and High and Low Worsall, but currently over 40% of our children come from out of the
catchment area.

The school has close links with similar small schools in the area. Throughout the year the
children have opportunities to work with their peers from other schools. This may take the form of
science, art or drama workshops, maths challenges and many other activities.

      Our aims are to:

            create a safe, caring and nurturing environment

      In order to achieve the school‟s aims, the school will clearly state its values and goals and

            helping children to develop self-discipline and respect for themselves, the school
             and the community
            recognising and rewarding achievement and contribution
            providing routes to success for children of all abilities, regardless of gender
             disability, race or creed.
            creating a partnership between the children, parents, governors and the
             community, which gives security and a sense of belonging to our children.


      Our rules have been developed by the staff and children based on an attitude of mutual
      respect between all members of our school community. A copy of our school rules can be
      found in the back of this booklet.


      We have a Home School Child Agreement which we ask you to discuss with your child.
      The format and wording was agreed at meetings with parents, governors and teachers.
      Agreements are issued after a child starts school. We hope you agree that it sets out our
      expectations of each other clearly and is for the benefit of your child‟s learning in school.

Parents are welcome to make an appointment to visit the school before registering their child, but
must register their child with North Yorkshire County Council before a place can be guaranteed.
Pre-registration with the school however will enable forms for this purpose to be sent to you in
the year before admission.

Our admission policy is as follows:
a)    All our starters are admitted in September.
b)    By January, all children will attend on a full time basis, although many are full time in
      school by half term in the Autumn as they settle so quickly and show us they are ready for
      a full day.

Before commencing full or part-time education, children are invited to spend a number of short
sessions and half days in school getting to know their teacher and future class-friends. It is
hoped that this will make them feel more at home and secure when full-time education begins. As
always we are happy to meet with you to discuss your child and ensure a smooth transition into
school. Just contact the school office.

Children with Special Educational Needs

If a child has learning problems they are given as much individual attention as is possible, and
teachers will work with parents to support each child to make progress. However, if this does not
seem to be achieving results we consult with parents and together we will seek specialist
assistance. We can call upon a range of advisory and support services provided by the Local
Authority. Children may be placed on the schools‟ Special Needs Register, in which case,
individual learning targets are set and parents kept fully involved in working with school to help
their child achieve their targets. Parents will be consulted at Parents Evenings, or at progress
review meetings if considered necessary.

Children living in our catchment area, who have to travel more than two miles to school, are
entitled to have free transport. This can be arranged after confirmation of a place for your child
with County Hall School Transport Department Tel: 01609 780780. A teacher should be
informed if you wish to collect a child who normally travels on the school bus, and the bus driver
must be informed on the day of travel if there are changes to the travel arrangements.

It is the parent‟s responsibility to ensure their child arrives at school safely. Children should
normally arrive about five to ten minutes before the start of the school day. Parents bringing and
collecting children by car are encouraged to park outside the church and walk down to school to
ensure children cross the main road safely.

The wearing of school uniform, whilst optional, is encouraged as it helps promote a sense of
community cohesion.

Orders can be placed throughout the year for uniform.

Children need a pair of sturdy shoes to wear whilst in school and a pair of playtime shoes such
as trainers that can be worn for games lessons too.

Children also need to be appropriately dressed for Physical Education.

       Indoors:       Navy Shorts and White T-shirt, plimsolls, change of socks

       Outdoors:      Navy Shorts, white T-shirt and trainers/football boots. (Depending on game
                      taught at the time), change of socks
                      Winter – navy jogging bottoms, navy sweatshirts
                      N.B. Please no club football shirts and no fashion shorts.

For art and craft lessons infants are provided with aprons. Juniors should bring an old shirt or
blouse to protect clothing.

It is essential to mark all clothing and shoes clearly with your child’s name.

It is hoped that children will wish to stay for school lunch. We are fortunate to have our meals
cooked on the premises from fresh ingredients by our creative cook. A good, substantial,
nutritious meal is available at a cost of £2 per day/£10 per week for the first child and £1.80 per
day / £9 per week for siblings. All meals should be paid for in advance either half termly or on
Monday mornings. Cheques should be made payable to NYCC. It is helpful if monies are placed
in an envelope marked with the child‟s name, class and amount contained.

Free school meals are available to children from families in receipt of Family Income Support. If
you think you are entitled to free meals application should be made to County Hall on form
FM/B1 available from the school office.

We aim to give good social training at lunchtime and persuade all children to try a little of
everything. It is our experience that when a child says they don‟t like something it usually means
that they have never tried it. However, there can be times when a child really does not like
something, or is on a special diet. In such circumstances a note from you will put the matter
right. A vegetarian option for lunch is available to order.

As an alternative to school meals children may bring packed lunches. Please ensure that lunch
boxes and drink containers are labelled with your child‟s name. All drinks should be in
shatterproof containers. We try to encourage our children to think about healthy options as I am
sure you do in packing their lunch boxes.
If a child wishes to change from dinner to packed lunch or vice versa, please can you ensure we
have a least 3 weeks notice.

Lunchtime supervision is provided by Midday Supervisors working in consultation with the


Fruit or a cereal type bar may also be brought from home.
Please do not send your child with chocolate or sweets. Nuts should also be avoided because of
the danger of allergy.

School holiday dates are published in advance each year, if you need to take holidays during the
school year you should request a holiday form. The law allows children to be absent from school
for a maximum of 10 school days each year. There is a holiday list on the back page of this
booklet. Please avoid taking your child from school during the week in which Government
Statutory Assessment Tests (SATS) take place. These dates are included on the holiday list.


The governing body of Great Smeaton Community Primary School consists of ten governors who
meet every half term during the school year. We can be likened to the directors of a company
with the headteacher as the Managing Director! Two committees support us in our work: the
Finance and Premises committee and the Curriculum and Standards Committee. Our work can
be varied and demanding from strategic planning to classroom monitoring, from financial scrutiny
to staff recruitment. However the role is very rewarding and it is a pleasure to feel we are giving
something back to the school and community with our efforts.

It is not the role of an individual governor to resolve problems. If a parent has any concerns or
problems they should be brought to the attention of the Head teacher or failing that the Chair of
Governors where they will be dealt with appropriately.


The school has an active and flourishing P. T. A. known as the Friends Of Great Smeaton.
(FROGS), which organises a mixture of educational, social and fund raising activities. We are
always grateful for the support of the association, which has provided equipment, and resources
we would otherwise not have enjoyed.

There is an elected committee of parents who work to organise events for adults and for the
children. A new committee is elected by ballot at the A. G. M., which is held in the Summer

All children are taught in accordance with the National Curriculum. It has three aims:

          1.   To be broad and balanced
          2.   To cater for children‟s spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development
          3.   To prepare children for opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.

Four subjects form the core of the curriculum; English, Mathematics and Science and ICT. The
other, foundation subjects are History, Geography, Technology, Music, Art, Physical Education,
Religious Education, Personal Social and Health Education (PSHE) and Citizenship. In addition
we teach a modern Foreign Language, currently French, to all pupils.


The overriding aim of the English curriculum is to enable all pupils to develop to the full their
ability to use and understand English. Since language can be both spoken and written, this
means the fullest possible development of abilities in listening, speaking, reading and writing.
This involves encouraging children to:

              listen with concentration and thought, so that they are able to understand the
               words of others and respond to them;
              speak fluently and confidently, having the power to choose and arrange words so
               that they are able to express their thoughts clearly;
              read with understanding, fluency and critical appreciation, for pleasure and to
               extract relevant information from factual books;
              write legibly and coherently with regard for neat presentation, correct spelling and
               punctuation, so that they are able to communicate their thoughts with accuracy,
               imagination and description appropriate to the purpose for which it is intended.

We encourage children‟s interest in and hopefully love of books. Once a year we hold a Book
Week, which is the focus for a range of activities, centred around the pleasure that can be gained
from reading.

Computers with appropriate word processing and spelling programs are used to further develop
children‟s writing and language skills. Digital video is used to tell stories and to encourage
reluctant writers to have a go at creating a story.

We hope to make the subject of mathematics exciting and relevant to your children, so
that they gain enjoyment and confidence from it.
Our aim is to develop children‟s knowledge, skill and understanding in three broad areas: using
and applying number, shape and space and measures, and handling data.
Computational skills are taught, as are tables and number bonds (e.g. 2+3=5). This involves
practical work and the use of physical materials when appropriate. The “Numeracy Strategy” is
being followed and therefore a strong emphasis is placed on mental arithmetic.
We would also hope to develop logical thinking and opportunities are created for mathematical
problem solving.
Calculators and computers are used in appropriate situations to enrich and extend the


The science curriculum aims to develop children‟s knowledge and understanding of the world
around them through practical activities. This involves encouraging children to:

             become even more curious about the world, and ask relevant questions;
             to invent and carry out simple investigations to enable them to answer these
             to be critical of their results and to be able to consider facts which may affect
              these results;
             to be able to organise and record their work clearly and logically.
             to foster respect for the world and knowledge to make informed choices.


The history curriculum begins by giving children a sense of time, asking questions „Who am I?‟
and „When and where am I?‟ Initially the past is concerned with family, home, school and
neighbours. Children are then introduced to historical personalities and events. As knowledge
and understanding grows particular periods (e.g. Vikings) and themes (e.g. Local History) are
investigated in a range of ways. These include:

             drawing on the child‟s own first hand experiences;
             direct investigation of objects;
             study of the local surroundings;
             visits to museums, historical sites etc.;

              using primary and secondary historical texts;
              role play to develop historical imagination;
              visiting speakers recounting their own experiences.


The geography curriculum is concerned with the study of landscape features, the location of
places and people, climate and the environment in which people live.
Outdoor studies of the local environment provide rich sources of information to be collected and
processed. It is through practical investigations of this type that children acquire appropriate
geographical knowledge, including map reading skills. The understanding and knowledge gained
can then be increasingly applied to peoples and places further afield in the world.


This subject is closely linked with science, mathematics and art. Children are encouraged to
draw on their knowledge and skills gained in these areas to support their designing and making
Children design and make models of things that work. These become increasingly more
complex and satisfy more demanding requirements as the child progresses. For instance a Y1
child will learn to cut wood to enhance collage work whilst an older child may be challenged to
design and construct a powered aeroplane.


The school enjoys music making and children are actively engaged in singing and making music
from the reception class onwards.
Young children have a natural need to express themselves in sound and rhythm so opportunity is
given to experiment with noise, to clap rhythms, move to action rhythms, dance to music and join
with others in singing songs.
Songs which are part of our national heritage are taught as are more contemporary works.
Listening to all kinds of music is encouraged, to foster knowledge of composers and their works.
Each week we select pieces of music to be used at the beginning and end of our assemblies.
All children from Year 3 are taught to play the recorder and there are a range of groups at
different levels of expertise. Children with other instrumental skills are able to join these groups.
Opportunities for sharing music making with others are provided by our daily assemblies, musical
drama productions, and concerts.
We also currently have peripatetic staffs who teach woodwind, brass, string and classical guitar
lessons during school time. Parents pay for these lessons unless the family is in receipt of
Family Income Support.

Our aim is to develop the children‟s creative abilities and awareness through
working with a range of materials including paint, clay, fabric and drawing media.
Some of the children‟s creations are brought home for you to enjoy. Others are attractively
displayed in school, which helps perpetuate the stimulus of the school environment.
Once a year the children enter their paintings into the local County Show and have frequently
won prizes. Other art competitions are entered regularly as they arise in the year.

Information Communication Technology (ICT)

The school is equipped with a range of computers, interactive whiteboards, scanners and
cameras which are updated as technology advances. The use of computers is planned for in all
subjects Children make use of ICT to create pictures, word process, draw graphics, find
information, control events and assist in specific learning tasks e.g. learning times tables and
number bonds.

Physical Education

Physical education is complementary to the other aspects of the curriculum. We aim to develop
children‟s agility and physical co-ordination as well as the social skills of co-operation and shared
responsibility needed in team games.

All children are asked to bring correct P.E. clothing for physical education for reasons of freedom
of movement, safety and hygiene.
During the winter months the older children play football, touch rugby and netball. “Kwik Cricket”,
rounders and athletics are taught during the summer. We participate regularly in inter-school
competitions. Our annual Sports Day is held towards the end of the Summer Term.
The school hall converts to a well equipped gymnasium and is also used for dance.
Children have the opportunity to go swimming in the Autumn and Summer Terms. Lessons take
place at the Hambleton Leisure Centre in Northallerton.

Religious Education

The school, whilst not affiliated to any particular religious denomination, has close links with the
local parish church, St. Eloy‟s. We are fortunate to be able to use the Church for the Harvest
Festival and Carol Service to which you are all invited.

An assembly is held each day; a gathering where Christian ethos predominates. Reverend
David Lewis from St. Eloy‟s takes an assembly every other week.

Themes of the religious education curriculum include:

               Stories from the Old and New Testaments
               Men and women of faith
               Social and personal relationships
               History of the Christian Church
               World religions

If you do not wish your child to participate in assemblies and instead want to provide your child
with an alternative course of study, arrangements can be made to withdraw them. Please contact
the school office.

              Modern Foreign Language

French is taught to all the children. They begin with conversation and social phrases and move
on to written French as they move through the school.

Sex and Relationships Education

Education about relationships goes on from the earliest years as children learn about friendships
and how to be a good friend. This develops as they get older into considerations of peer pressure
and resisting bad influences.
When questions about sexual matters arise they are dealt with appropriately for the age of the
pupil; as carefully as possible and in such a manner as to encourage pupils to have regard to
moral considerations and the values of family life.

The school nurse visits to speak to Yr 6 pupils about growing up and the physical and other
changes of puberty. Parents are given details of this talk and encouraged to follow it up with a
further discussion at home. Parents are able to request that their child is withdrawn from the
nurse‟s sessions, or are free to join their child at the session.


All children are expected to do some work at home. This may involve bringing a book home to
read, finding information, completing a piece of work etc. Naturally the nature of the homework
will vary in accordance with the child‟s age and ability. The school‟s homework policy is available
from the school office. If your child is struggling with homework do please tell us as this is never
the intention.

The care and welfare of pupils is the first concern and the primary responsibility of the class
teacher and the head teacher. The small size of our school enables the staff to form close
relationships with the children. However, from time to time there may be special or distressing
circumstances at home that are upsetting your child. A confidential word with the class teacher
or headteacher will enable us to give your child the support and understanding that is needed.

Discipline in school is essential for three reasons:
               For the physical safety of the children.
               To establish an atmosphere where learning can take place.
               To ensure the happiness and emotional security of the children and encourage
                good relationships.
A form of discipline involving rewards has been found to work. The greatest reward for children
is the praise and pleasure of their teacher and classmates. This might take the form of a mention
in assembly or some work put on display. Weekly there is a “merit assembly” in which children
are able to share their work and achievements. These may be in the form of a “blue card” gained
during the previous week, or in the presentation of a certificate for academic work or for their
good behaviour, manners or care for another pupil.
In cases of persistent unacceptable behaviour the headteacher will arrange an interview with
parents to see whether with home and school working together the difficulty can be resolved.

If you have any concerns regarding your child’s welfare within school e.g. difficulties in
the playground, please do not hesitate to contact the child’s teacher.

Great Smeaton School is committed to ensuring the welfare and safety of all children in school.
All North Yorkshire schools follow approved North Yorkshire Area Child Protection Committee
Child Protection procedures and the North Yorkshire LEA procedures. The school will, in the
vast majority of circumstances, endeavour to discuss concerns about their children with the
child‟s parents. However, there may be exceptional circumstances when the first port of call for
the school must be Social Services and/or the Police, (in accordance with Child Protection
procedures). The school will, of course, always aim to maintain a positive relationship
with parents.

We believe that a close partnership between home and school will help your children benefit fully
from their time with us. We keep in touch through:
We send home a newsletter fortnightly that contains the date of the next letter. Its aim is to keep
you fully informed about events in school. Please make sure you receive your copy. If you would

Open Evening / Reports
There are Open Evenings each term, when parents may consult their child‟s teacher. Written
reports are given in the Summer Term. Parents are always welcome to visit school at other
times to discuss their child‟s progress.
Harvest and Class Assemblies
Once a term classes present an aspect of their work to the school. Parents and friends are very
welcome at these assemblies to share what children have been studying.

In the event of children being taken ill or being injured at school it is essential that we are able to
contact parents quickly. Our records contain details of home and work place telephone numbers
and addresses but it is important that you inform us of any changes. It is also helpful if you
tell your child if you are likely to be out or away for the day. If we cannot establish contact in an
emergency we will act as parent and take the appropriate action in the interests of your child‟s

The Local Education Authority only insures against injury caused to children as a result of
negligence. Personal accident insurance for children is the responsibility of parents. However,
the school takes out insurance with NYCC to cover children during outings and sporting activities.
Personal insurance should be taken out for musical instruments that are brought into school.

Medical Examinations
All children in school are examined by the County medical and dental service. You are entitled to
be present at medical examinations and will be informed when they are taking place.
Hearing and Vision
All new entrants are given a hearing and vision examination during their first year at school.
Further tests take place at the beginning of the junior stage and shortly before transfer to
secondary school.

Please notify the school by 9.30 if your child will be absent and send a letter when they return to
school. Please understand that if you do not call the school to report your child absent we are
obliged to contact you to ensure that your child is safely in your care.

If it is essential that if a child takes medicine during the school day, our first preference is that you
come into school to administer it or ask family or a friend to do so. Where this is not possible the
medicine must be labelled and accompanied by written instructions. Staff will not be able to
administer medicine unless a completed permission form giving details of dosage, frequency and
the name of the prescribing doctor has been lodged with the school. A form can be found at the
back of this booklet and further copies are available from the school office.

Where a child needs an inhaler it should be given to the child‟s teacher and be labelled with the
child‟s name and the correct dose. Parents of older pupils who carry their own inhalers must
inform the teacher that an inhaler is needed. Could parents also make sure that there is a spare
inhaler in school for use if the main one is lost or damaged, and make sure that the inhaler is not
out of date or empty! Thanks.

Parents, grandparents and friends are always welcome to help in school. This may involve
activities such as listening to children read, labelling books, helping with displaying pupil‟s work

or perhaps helping a group with sewing or cookery. If anyone has connections, an interest or
talent which can benefit our children please share it with us.
 All volunteers who work with children now have to have clearance using the Criminal Records
Bureau checks. If you intend working in school you will need to fill in a CRB form which has a list
of documents that need to be viewed. Please do not send these documents in with your child.
The law requires that you bring them in person. I can then apply for the check to take place.

We are always looking for help in transporting children short distances for environmental work or
sports matches. The County Education Officer has advised Headteachers that all vehicles used
to transport children must be correctly insured, be roadworthy and have booster seats where
appropriate. I am sure you will appreciate that this advice is given not only in the interest of the
child, but also that of parents and others who volunteer in this way. If you are willing to help you
will need to inform your Insurance Company and bring copies of appropriate documentation to
the school office. Please see back of booklet for more information.


Under the terms of the Educational Reform Act 1988 the school is not allowed to make a
compulsory charge towards the cost of activities. However, we are permitted to ask for voluntary
contributions and the governors have authorised me to do so. I am sure you will understand that
the school cannot afford to pay for visits from within the funds available to us. These
contributions must be genuinely voluntary and a parent‟s inability or unwillingness to pay will not
prevent a child taking part in an activity. Regrettably, if insufficient voluntary contributions are
received then a visit or activity may not take place.


Children whose 11th birthday is on or before August 31st normally transfer to the Allertonshire
School or one of the Richmond schools. There is close liaison between the primary and
secondary schools. In the Winter Term prior to transfer, forms for school preferences are
completed. In the Summer Term a member of the secondary staff visits our school, children
spend a day at their chosen school and in some cases parental/pupil interviews are held.
