[JESSICA]

HEY EVERYBODY IT'S WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19TH. I'M JESSICA KUMARI
AND CHANNEL ONE NEWS STARTS NOW
THERE'S BEEN TALK THAT WE'VE SEEN THE WORST OF THE RECESSION.
BUT TODAY WE'LL TELL YOU WHY ITS IMPACT WILL BE AFFECTING
SCHOOLS FOR A LONG TIME.

THE ENTIRE COUNTRY HAS BEEN FEELING THE EFFECTS OF THE
ECONOMIC CRISIS.
BUT THE GOLDEN STATE, USUALLY KNOWN FOR HAVING A STRONG
ECONOMY, IS ACTUALLY TAKING SOME OF THE BIGGEST HITS.
JUSTIN FINCH REPORTS FROM LOS ANGELES.

[JUSTIN]

IT WAS ONLY A MINUTE LONG, BUT 18 YEAR OLD DAVID VERA'S STUDENT
FILM ABOUT HIS TEACHER BEING LAID OFF GIVES AN EMOTIONAL
GLIMPSE INTO A STORY BEING PLAYED OUT IN SCHOOLS ALL OVER
CALIFORNIA.
I think it gave people a different view of budget cuts and how they affect the students.
When I watch that video, straightforward, I got goose bumps, my hair stood on end, I
started choking up, felt teary eyed.
MR. ARANAGA -- OR MR. "A" AS HE'S KNOWN AT MONROE HIGH SCHOOL --
IS A FAVORITE TEACHER AMONG STUDENTS. but WHEN THE SCHOOL LAID
OFF TEACHERS TO SAVE MONEY, HE WAS ONE OF THOSE ASKED TO
LEAVE.
HE FOUGHT TO STAY -- AND GOT HIS JOB BACK. BUT THAT WASN'T THE
END OF HIS WORRIES.

[JUSTIN]
do you worry about your students' future when you look out at them, knowing these cuts
are coming and they're so severe?"

[MR. A]
I've already started losing sleep at night, I've already been told I have at least one class
that's going to be over 45 students. where are my students going to sit? How am I going
to pay attention to them? …keeping track of 25 teenagers, most managers at a mcdonalds
can barely keep track of 10."
[JUSTIN]
DESPITE HAVING THE EIGHTH LARGEST ECONOMY IN THE WORLD,
CALIFORNIA WASN'T IMMUNE TO THE ECONOMIC MELTDOWN THE
NATION EXPERIENCED LAST YEAR.
THE STATE FACED A TWENTY-SIX BILLION DOLLAR BUDGET GAP.
CUTS HAD TO BE MADE.
AND OF THE PROGRAMS THAT TOOK THE BIGGEST HIT, EDUCATION WAS
NUMBER ONE.
Here's why what happens in California is important - its because the decisions and
policies made here are usually a sign of where other states are going which is why
California has earned the reputation of a "so-go" state - as in so-goes California, so goes
the rest of the country.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS ACROSS THE NATION ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO
SAVE MONEY.
IN CALIFORNIA, STUDENTS WILL SEE CUTS LIKE CANCELLED BUS ROUTES,
CLOSED SUMMER SCHOOLS AND MORE TEACHER LAY-OFFS.

its going to get worse before it gets better, next year will be even trickier. There will be
more difficult decisions being made around busing for athletic events, um do we have JV
teams? Or do we just stay with varsity?

YUP, EVEN HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETICS MAY FEEL THE CRUNCH.
FOR EXAMPLE, ONE IDEA BEING BOUNCED AROUND -- TAKING THE TEAM
TO AWAY-GAMES BUT LEAVING THE BAND, AND MAYBE THE
CHEERLEADERS AT HOME.

SCHOOL OFFICIALS SAY THEY WOULD RATHER NOT MAKE THESE CUTS,
BUT THEY JUST DON'T HAVE THE MONEY.

Its pretty painful but its going to continue to go down unless something changes.

ANOTHER BIG CUT FOR SOME STUDENTS? THE END OF SUMMER SCHOOL.
L.A. PUBLIC SCHOOLS CANCELLED THEIR SUMMER SCHOOL CLASSES. SO
STUDENTS TURNED TO COMMUNITY COLLEGES TO MAKE UP CREDITS.
BUT ONCE THEY GOT THERE, MORE BAD NEWS -- THAT TOO WAS
CANCELLED.

[JUSTIN]
What are you doing here at a community college?

[SALLY]
Well I'm trying to earn my college credits to transfer early to my UCs.

[JUSTIN]
and were you supposed to be taking classes here anyway?

[SALLY]
Yeah, that was the plan but the second semester got cut.

[JUSTIN]
STUDENTS LIKE SALLY CHUNG ARE NOW HAVING TO SCRAMBLE FOR
THOSE EXTRA CREDITS.

"I have to take more classes in the winter which means all of my vacations are gone."
BUT EVEN THAT MAY NO LONGER BE AN OPTION. THIS CAMPUS IS
CONSIDERING CANCELLING THEIR WINTER SESSION TOO.
JUSTIN FINCH, CHANNEL ONE NEWS.

[JESSICA]
YOU MAY BE SURPRISED AT SOME OF THE PEOPLE TRYING TO HELP
BOOST CALIFORNIA'S BUDGET. INCLUDING THE BAND, THIRD EYE BLIND.
TOMORROW, STEVEN FABIAN TAKES US BACK STAGE AT A THIRD EYE
BLIND CONCERT MEANT TO RAISE MONEY FOR EDUCATION.
AND IF YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT HOW BUDGET CUTS ARE
AFFECTING SCHOOLS AROUND THE COUNTRY, HEAD TO CHANNEL ONE
DOT COM.

[JESSICA]

TIME FOR YOUR DAILY NEWS BRIEF WITH THE TEAM. GARY YOU'VE GOT
NEWS ON THE PRESIDENT?

[GARY]
IN ANOTHER EFFORT TO JUMPSTART A MIDDLE EAST PEACE PLAN,
PRESIDENT OBAMA SAT DOWN WITH THE PRESIDENT OF EGYPT.
IT'S BEEN MORE THAN FIVE YEARS SINCE PRESIDENT HOSNI MUBARAK
VISITED THE WHITE HOUSE.

MUBARAK WAS ONCE A FREQUENT VISITOR BUT HAS STAYED AWAY
BECAUSE OF EGYPT'S OPPOSITION TO THE IRAQ WAR *AND* BECAUSE
PRESIDENT BUSH PRESSURED MUBARAK TO TWEAK THE EGYPTIAN
POLITICAL SYSTEM AND HUMAN RIGHTS POLICIES.

NOW, THE TWO CURRENT PRESIDENTS WANT TO STRENGTHEN TIES.
EGYPT HAD BEEN AN IMPORTANT ALLY FOR THE U-S. IN PART, BECAUSE
IT IS LOCATED SOUTHWEST OF ISRAEL, AND BORDERS A VOLATILE
REGION WHERE ISRAELI FORCES AND PALESTINIANS HAVE CLASHED FOR
DECADES.
DURING THE PRESIDENTS MEETING, THEY DISCUSSED STOPPING THE
EXPANSION OF JEWISH SETTLEMENTS IN THE WEST BANK, AN AREA
BETWEEN ISRAEL AND JORDAN WHERE THE PALESTINIANS WANT TO
CREATE THEIR OWN STATE.

HOWEVER, THE ISRAELI GOVERNMENT DISAGREES, CAUSING A RARE
PUBLIC DISPUTE BETWEEN THE U-S AND ISRAEL, WHICH ARE
TRADITIONALLY CLOSE ALLIES.

MUBARAK ALSO APPEARS READY TO SIDE WITH THE U-S IN TAKING A
STANCE AGAINST IRAN'S NUCLEAR PROGRAM.
MUBARAK, LIKE PRESIDENT OBAMA, WORRIES THAT A NUCLEAR-ARMED
IRAN COULD DRASTICALLY CHANGE THE BALANCE OF POWER IN THE
MIDDLE EAST.

[ADRIANA]
VACCINES ARE MEANT TO PREVENT DISEASE BUT ONE THAT COMES
RECOMMENDED FOR TEEN GIRLS HAS BEEN IN THE HEADLINES FOR
POSSIBLY CAUSING HEALTH PROBLEMS, HPV, OR HUMAN PAMPLONA
VIRUS, IS A VIRUS THAT ACCOUNTS FOR 70 PERCENT OF U-S CASES OF
CERVICAL CANCER, OR CANCER IN THE LOWER PART OF A WOMAN'S
UTERUS.
.AND SINCE THE HPV VACCINE GARDASILE WAS APPROVED BY THE FDA
THREE YEARS AGO, 25 PERCENT OF WOMEN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 9 AND
TWENTY-SIX HAVE GOTTEN IT.
BUT, A NEW STUDY SHOWS THAT OUT OF THE MORE THAN 24 MILLION
DOSES THAT HAVE BEEN DISTRIBUTED OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS, MORE
THAN 13-THOUSAND HEALTH PROBLEMS HAVE BEEN REPORTED,
INCLUDING 39 DEATHS.
BUT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS THERE'S NO EVIDENCE THE VACCINE IS TO
BLAME.

"As of yet there haven't been any adverse side effects that are directly linked to the
vaccine."

THE GOVERNMENT IS LOOKING INTO THE POTENTIAL CAUSES OF THESE
HEALTH PROBLEMS.
DOCTORS SAY THE REASON THERE'S BEEN MORE OF A PUSH FOR
*WOMEN* TO GET VACCINATED
IS JUST BECAUSE THERE'S BEEN MORE RESEARCH DONE ON WOMEN. BUT,
PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES ARE NOW TAKING A CLOSER LOOK INTO
THE AFFECTS OF THE VIRUS ON MEN.

[ALI]
THERE'S BEEN A LOT OF TALK ABOUT THE AMERICAN AUTO INDUSTRY'S
MONEY PROBLEMS - REMEMBER A FEW MONTHS AGO, THE GOVERNMENT
ACTUALLY GAVE SOME AUTOMAKERS A LOAN. WELL THIS WEEK, THERE'S
SOME GOOD NEWS.

ACCORDING TO A NEW SURVEY BY THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN,
CONSUMERS ARE HAPPIER WITH US AUTOMAKERS WITH CUSTOMER
SATISFACTION HITTING RECORD HIGHS

FORD SAW THE BIGGEST JUMP WITH A FIVE PERCENT INCREASE IN
SATISFACTION, WHILE CHRYSLER AND GENERAL MOTORS, WHO BOTH
RECEIVED A LOT OF HELP FROM THE GOVERNMENT, SAW AN INCREASE OF
FOUR AND TWO PERCENT.

SALES HAVE FALLEN FOR SOME CAR COMPANIES BY ALMOST HALF, AND
AS THE NUMBER OF CUSTOMERS DROPS, THE REMAINING CUSTOMERS
TEND TO BE THE MOST LOYAL TO THE BRAND.
THE STUDY, WHICH STARTED IN 1994, IS BASED ON INTERVIEWS OF 11-
THOUSAND AMERICANS CONDUCTED EACH SPRING

[JESSICA]
ALRIGHT, THAT'S A WRAP OF HEADLINES. COMING UP - WHY A FIGHT
BETWEEN TWO POPULAR MUSIC STARS HELPED ONE TEEN SEEK HELP IN
HER OWN LIFE.

[JESSICA]
R-and-B SINGER CHRIS BROWN PLEADED GUILTY THIS SUMMER TO A
FELONY ASSAULT CHARGE. HIS VICTIM? GIRLFRIEND-AT-THE-TIME
RIHANNA. WHEN THE ABUSE MADE HEADLINES, ONE FAN REALIZED SHE
WAS FACING A SIMILAR SITUATION.

I never thought someone i listened to on the radio, a couple, would go through the same
thing

[JESSICA]
18-YEAR-OLD WHITLEY-ANN SAYS SHE EXPERIENCED THAT PAIN AT THE
HANDS OF HER EX-BOYFRIEND

"He bruised me. The inside of my arm was just bruised for days. Nobody really knew. I
didn't want people to not like him, because I knew I was going back to him."

ACCORDING TO A STUDY BY LIZ CLAIBORNE AND THE FAMILY VIOLENCE
PREVENTION FUND, THERE'S AN INCREASE IN TEEN DATING VIOLENCE --
AND IT'S DIRECTLY TIED TO THE ECONOMY.
THE STUDY SAYS: NEARLY 1 IN 3 TEENS REPORT BEING VICTIMS OF
VERBAL, PHYSICAL OR SEXUAL ABUSE. NEARLY 1 IN 4 SAY THEY'VE BEEN
HARASSED VIA EMAIL OR TEXT MESSAGING. AND NEARLY HALF REPORT
BEING CONTROLLED, THREATENED OR PRESSURED TO DO THINGS
AGAINST THEIR WILL. THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO WHITLEY-ANN.

he came to my house and lucky thing my friend was there because if she was not, i feel
like he was going to kill me.

LIKE A LOT OF VICTIMS IN THE STUDY, WHITLEY-ANN SAYS SHE WAS TOO
SCARED TO TELL HER FAMILY OR HER FRIENDS.

"A lot of people don't know when they're in an abusive relationship they're in denial like i
was."
NOW THAT SHE'S FREE OF HER ABUSER, WHITLEY-ANN PLANS TO START
COLLEGE IN THE FALL, WHERE THE ASPIRING PERFORMER HOPES TO
START THE NEXT ACT OF HER LIFE.

[JESSICA]

AS FOR POP STAR CHRIS BROWN, THE JUDGE IN HIS CASE HAS DELAYED
SENTENCING UNTIL LATER THIS MONTH. THAT DOES IT FOR CHANNEL
ONE NEWS. I'M JESSICA KUMARI. I'LL CYA TOMORROW
