“ARGOSY UNIVERSITY/TWIN CITIES DOCTORAL STUDENT
ENGINEERS A BRIGHTER CAREER”
Joseph Bumblis, a doctoral student at Argosy University/Twin Cities, received the 2004
Outstanding Member Award from the Twin Cities regional chapter of the Institute of Electrical
and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). This award recognizes members of the Twin Cities IEEE ARGOSY UNIVERSITY/TWIN CITIES
chapter who, through their professional and technical abilities, have made outstanding and Joseph Bumblis
                                                                                                   Doctor of Business Administration in
noteworthy contributions to the chapter, their communities, and fellow professionals. Information Systems

But winning an industry award is just one success for this doctoral student who, after years in
the information technology field, is taking his talent and education to a higher level. Bumblis,
an information technology project manager at United Defense in Fridley, Minn., is currently
pursuing a Doctor of Business Administration in Information Systems at Argosy
University/Twin Cities.

Prior to joining United Defense, Bumblis served as an assistant professor at Purdue University’s
School of Technology and also taught at the University of Minnesota’s Department of
Computer Science. He received a bachelor of science degree in Electrical Engineering from
Ohio University and a master of science degree in Management of Technology from the
University of Minnesota.

Even with his extensive background in information technology, Bumblis feels that pursuing a
Doctor of Business Administration in Information Systems at Argosy University/Twin Cities
will help him gain a more objective insight into both the business practices and management
motivations in his current position as an IT project manager.

“The research methods and the reacquisition of study habits should serve me well with tech-
nology research/investigation, deployment strategies, and validation of technology to address
real business needs,” explains Bumblis. “Long term, the DBA completes my already impres-
sive list of credentials supporting any academia interests I wish to pursue in the future."

“I felt the curriculum at Argosy University/Twin Cities was very well aligned with such gradu-
ate business institutions as Harvard and the University of Minnesota.,” says Bumblis. “It was
for these reasons of accreditation, curriculum, and class schedules for working professionals
that I choose to attend Argosy University/Twin Cities."

TRIUMPH OVER TRAGEDY
Business Student Looks to Argosy University/Twin Cities for a Second Chance at Career
Development

Tammy Gifford is among the first students to enter the College of Business and Information
Technology. In 1996, Gifford, who worked as a group home supervisor for Opal Services,
was seriously injured when a fully loaded semi truck hit her on her drive to work. The
months following the accident were the worst. Short-term brain damage and continued
physical pain in her back often left her frustrated and feeling inadequate. “There were times
                                                                                                ARGOSY UNIVERSITY/TWIN CITIES

“I searched for adequate employment for a year and was told many times that although my
resume and references were excellent, employers wanted candidates with a four year degree.
That is when I knew I had to return to school. However, I was scared that my injuries would
prevent me from being successful in college again. Then I researched programs at Argosy
University/Twin Cities.”

According to Gifford, from the very first phone contact at the school, she felt this was a
place that genuinely cared about a student's concerns, and were willing to “go the extra
mile” to help with life and educational transitions. “I addressed my concerns with Dr. Paula
King, head of the College of Business and Information Technology, and she was extremely
supportive,” says Gifford. “She explained to me that my fears were very normal for any
returning adult, and that Argosy University's faculty would support me in my endeavors.”

“In my experience with Argosy University, I have never had class sizes of more than ten peo-
ple, and the faculty has been extremely encouraging and individualistic. They have provided
me help I needed and have taken measures to ensure that everyone in the class was working
toward that quality education. I am certain I will succeed in my future, not just in my
career, but in all of life's challenges.”

Gifford currently maintains a high GPA, and is the recipient of the Argosy University/Twin
Cities' business program President's Award for spring quarter 2005. She also reports that
she is fully recovered from her brain injury and is eager to rejoin the
workforce upon her graduation.

STUDENT AUTHORS UNIQUE PAPER ON X-RAY
Have you ever thought x-ray physics was a dry and lifeless subject? While sitting in class, have you
ever imagined a more interesting approach to your subject matter, but just couldn’t seem to put all
the pieces together to adequately convey your message or to learn about something in a more
creative fashion?

Meet Steven Nowadzki, a Radiology Technology student at Argosy University/Twin Cities. “Radiology
has been a second career path for me,” Nowadzki relates. Armed with a B.S. degree in education, he
was inspired by several experiences to pursue a career in the healthcare profession. He was drawn to ARGOSY UNIVERSITY/TWIN CITIES

The power was tripped Converting AC to DC,
And I got the cue, “Ready to go?” And made to look easy medical imaging instruction.”
The 3xposure switch and I then met, It was the process of rectification,
A timer control was preset. Now high-voltage abound, Steven Nowadzki
And with a zap I started to flow. Rotor stator was found,
                                                                          The anode spun without deliberation.
My tour was trained by fortification, for danger knows electrification.
To prevent a malfunction, Meanwhile on the filament side, mA was controlled

My movements were greatly restricted. A compensator line
The unit was safely enclosed, Stabilized the current fine.
Thus operator not exposed Suddenly a step-down transformer had risen,
To hazards of ions inflicted. With 3 to 5 amps in its core,
6 to 12 volts, not any more.
The security issues had been addressed, and suddenly I was impressed. The tube was reached in the perfect precision.
The incoming-line was varied,
And quickly I was carried And though my trip was nearly aborted,
By a machine known as Autotransformer. Its success was already purported.
kV was selected, Had the process truly succeeded?
But I objected; Had I done all that was needed?
For I was now uncomfortably warmer. The radiographic techniques were set,
Operational goals had all been met
Though my opposition was known, it was ultimately alone. Yes, yes, yes, it all looked grand!
A second transformer took on, I realized now it was indeed preplanned.
Stepping-up voltage upon And this journey of great strength and constant precision
The consequent side of the course. Was complete when I produced thermionic emission.
The strength greatly grew,
And current withdrew
Induction had proven its force.

Steven looks forward to a new start with a new career in the healthcare industry. And, who knows?
Maybe this published work is just the start of good things to come -- new and creative ways to
approach the study and practice of quality healthcare in the future.
