Chairperson’s Report 2009
Here we are at the end of the first decade of the new millennium, and with it, time to look
back and reflect on our past achievements, particularly those of the last twelve months.
It was this time last year when Chris eventually donned the mantle of Group Secretary,
under much protest, but since then has done a sterling job. As well as looking after our
interests, she has also been heavily involved with the North of Tyne Search & Rescue
Group, training, working with, and also fund raising. Well done Chris.
The group has continued to provide a wide and varied selection of guided walks, which
have covered virtually the whole of the Northumbria Group area plus a bit extra,
throughout the year. Thank you to all the leaders, both old and new, who have given up
time in organising these events.
We again hosted the Durham Dales Challenge, unfortunately due to logistic reasons we
‘scrubbed’ the 50 mile event. It was another success, even a bit of fog & mist in the
Pawlaw Pike area, couldn’t dampen the spirits of the walkers. I would like to thank the
DDC committee for organising the event, along with all the helpers who gave up their time
on the day to man the checkpoints, transport equipment and personnel around the area, as
well as all the stalwarts who manned the ‘finish’ dishing up congratulations, certificates
and badges, and last but not least the kitchen staff who prepared meals fit for kings.
During the past year we have also returned to our old haunt ‘The Swan’ at Heworth for our
monthly get together. This has had limited success, so in the coming year we intend to
change our routine to a meeting once every two months. This hopefully will ease the
burden on our stalwarts and possibly induce others to attend and catch up with all the
Once again I have not been able to devote as much time to the group as I would have liked,
but my current personal circumstances prevent this. Who knows that when I finally ‘retire’
I may be able to be more of a chairperson than my past record displays.
To conclude on behalf of myself, in particular, and the group, in general, I would like to
wish you all a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year and keep putting your best foot forward
and clocking up those miles during the next twelve months.
