Dear Parent/Guardian,

Ensuring the safety of students is the District’s number one priority. Bicycle safety includes the wearing of a
properly fitted and secured helmet. Wearing a helmet is proven to prevent injury and death; And it’s the
Parents, it is imperative that you ensure that your child is wearing an approved, properly
fitted and securely fastened helmet.

The Office of District and School Security is working closely with local law enforcement and the Space Coast
Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) on a pro-active bicycle safety and helmet campaign focusing on
positive incentives, rather than enforcement. Please join in this initiative to keep all bicycle riders safe by
pledging to have your child wear their helmet.

wear a bicycle helmet. I understand that school personnel will be monitoring helmet compliance of students
riding bicycles on school campuses. Should it come to the attention of school staff that my child arrives at
school or attempts to depart the campus, without a helmet, I understand that I may be contacted. Should my
child arrive at school without their own helmet, I authorize school personnel to provide a loaner helmet, when
available, for my child to wear home and return the following day. If the loaner helmet is lost by my child, I
agree to pay a reimbursement fee. I have reviewed bicycle safety with my child and we agree a helmet will be
worn at all times.

FSS 316.2065 Bicycle Regulations States in part;

    A bicycle rider or passenger who is under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet that is properly fitted and is fastened
     securely upon the passenger's head by a strap, and that meets the standards of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI
     Z 90.4 Bicycle Helmet Standards), the standards of the Snell Memorial Foundation (1984 Standard for Protective Headgear for
     Use in Bicycling), or any other nationally recognized standards for bicycle helmets adopted by the department.
    A bicycle rider or passenger who violates this subsection may be issued a citation by a law enforcement officer. The court shall
     dismiss the charge against a bicycle rider or passenger for a first violation upon proof or purchase of a bicycle helmet that
     complies with this.
    No parent of any minor child and no guardian of any minor ward may authorize or knowingly permit any such minor child or
     ward to violate any of the provisions of this section (law).
