Writing Syllabus for the First Six Weeks
Requirements for Six Weeks Grade
1) 25% - Our focus for this six weeks includes the following types of writing:
A. Book Review – Including a brief summary and a recommendation.
B. Expository Essay – Writing that explains a specific subject.
C. Poem – We will discuss various types and elements in class.
D. Brief Literary Analysis – We will discuss guidelines in class.
E. One Writing of Choice – Must be approved by me.
To make a/an:
A – A book review, expository essay, poem, brief literary analysis, and one
writing of choice
B – A book review, expository essay, brief literary analysis, and one other
C – A book review, expository essay, and brief literary analysis
D – An expository essay and brief literary analysis
**Any extra pieces you complete above the number required for an A will add
one point to your final grade for the six weeks. Of course, quality must be
2) 25% - Choose one final copy of your choice. This piece should be what you
consider your best work. The final copy should include a minimum of the
following: planning, first draft, self edit and revision, second draft, evidence of
student conference, final draft, and published piece. All should be stapled
FINAL COPY DUE: Friday, September 10
3) 50% - A. Rough draft grades – Each week you will turn in 5 pages of rough
draft writing from that week. Each day you should date your papers
B. Commitment to Workshop grades – This is how well you work in the
workshop setting. Productivity, behavior, and use of time is
measured. Each week, you will begin with 100 points. Each class
disruption or interruption of workshop will cost 10 points.
C. Teacher Conference Grades – You are required to have a teacher
conference one time each week.
D. Oral Sharing Grade – You are required to share with the class at
least once during the six weeks by September 14.
