                Basketball Wales Successes in 2008/2009
Dear Visitor to the Basketball Wales Web Site,
                                           We are delighted to keep you up to
date on what Basketball Wales is doing, and how successful initiatives have
been implemented. Feel free to have a look around the web site and look at most
of the issues listed below in more detail.
In 2008/2009, we have:

*Membership up 24% - well done to everyone and many thanks for your support.

1. Produced new 4 Year Strategic Plan – agreed with the SCW
2. Produced a new Basketball Wales Administration Handbook
3. Completed the SCW Self Assurance Procedure
4. Completed the SCW/PWC Register of Risk
5. Conducted a number of productive discussions with unitary authorities to
include new partnership arrangements with RCT, Caerphilly, Bridgend and
Cardiff, and first discussions with Torfaen.
6, Successfully implemented the National Schools Basketball Championships,
with semi-finals and finals, during the Terry Price weekend, for boys and girls
U12, and for boys and girls U14. Next year BW will be adding the U16 age group
for boys and girls, and also include the first national schools championships for
primary schools (mini-basketball)
7. Completed the response to the PWC report and all it’s recommendations
8. Successful inaugural meeting with National Coaches
9. Successful meetings with afPE advisers to develop schools links/coaching
courses
10. Successful area meeting in Carmarthen, new league established for U16
boys
11. Successful acquisition of additional member benefits, e.g. physiotherapy
service, comprehensive insurance arrangements, car hire and hotel use.
12. Successful transition of banking arrangements to Abbey Bank. This enables
Basketball Wales to have a full internet banking facility
13. Successful implementation of strict new financial procedures for Basketball
Wales
14. Successful completion of a number of coaching courses, refereeing courses
and table officials’ courses, including new Leaders courses for the first time

15. Successful meeting with British Basketball Federation and SCW - Alistair
Grey and Dr Huw Jones
16. Successful meeting with NBA Europe – good working relationship and
agreements established
17. Successful committee work with British Basketball Federation – London and
Sheffield
18. Successful work with British Performance Basketball in preparation for 2012.
Successful meeting and on-going discussions with the chair of BPB
19. Highly successful appointment of new U16 Boys National Coach
20. Successful acquisition of ‘sponsored’ 24 new basketballs from Molten
21. Successful acquisition of a large number of caps from NBA London
22. Ongoing partnership developments with Macron, apparel suppliers
23. CEO has attended a large number of functions where he has represented
Basketball Wales, e.g. CEO Wales meetings, Dame Tani Grey gala dinner,
UWIC Business events, Basketball Masters planning event, WSA meetings, and
a number of Archers and Celts’ games
24. Letter written to First Minister and others regarding Olympic facility and
‘regionality’.
25. Successful participation in the FITT 100% S4C programme for children (Sion
and Ysgol Plas Mawr) Additional TV programmes have also made advances to
BW to work with colleagues
26. Successful planning and implementation of Talent Identification and
Development Academies for U12 and U14 girls, with a complementary coach
education programme running alongside. These are being held in UWIC,
coordinated by Lucy Power, with a similar programme being held in north Wales
coordinated by James Morgans
27. Exciting new web site and corporate identity agreed and in place
28. A review and audit of the finances of Basketball Wales, and the
implementation of new financial controls, procedures and management for all
activities.
29. A review and improvement of the Constitution of Basketball Wales
30. A review and improvement of the Governance structure of Basketball Wales
31. A review and improvement of the Membership arrangements, including a new
fee structure and information for members on exactly what they get for their
membership.
32. A review and reorganization of Executive Board meetings, with all minutes
and reports published on the BW web site. Executive Board meetings are now
held once a month, with the AGM held in July each year
33. A review and up-skilling of the Executive Board. There is now a new acting
Chairman (I Jones deceased) with the former Director of Basketball stepping

down from the Board to concentrate on other business ventures. There is a new
Director of Schools (tbc at AGM) a new Director of Table Officials (tbc at AGM)
and a new Assistant Director of Finance. There is also a new and very active
Executive member (legal expertise) Members have taken up CPD activities
provided by WSA.
34. A successful application for Basketball Wales to have an office base in the
Welsh Institute for Sport. (30th June 2008)
35. A review, improvement and implementation of the way coaches can apply for
their CRB checks at a ‘no fee’ cost (Welsh Council for Voluntary Action)
36. A review and reorganization of how WIS facility use is made available to
National Team Coaches. A request had been made for a substantial increase for
2009/2010 to cater for increased international activity.
37. A 22 authority audit of basketball activity was carried out and evaluated for
the purpose of gaining an overall picture of basketball provision and development
across Wales.
38. BW is working with the SCW and UWIC in undertaking a major coaching
audit to fully explore and determine the coaching needs of coaches in Wales.
39. Discussions with the SCW PESS Manager in order to plan for how basketball
can contribute to the PESS programme in the coming years
40. Discussions with the SCW Dragon Sport Manager in order to plan for how
basketball can contribute to the Dragon Sport programme in the coming years
41. Discussions with the 5/60 Manager in order to plan for how basketball can
contribute to the 5/60 programme in the coming years
42. Discussions and agreement to work closely with the GB Wheelchair
Basketball association and in particular, the Federation for Disability Sport
Wales.
43. CEO raising the profile of the sport through his spotlight in the Welsh Sports
Association newsletter and the SCW pod cast
44. Securing of 10,000 Euro FIBA Europe grant for international team support
45. Securing of 50,000 Euro FIBA Europe grant for international player and team
development over a two year period.
46. Successful participation in the European Division C Championships for the
Men (Scotland), Women (Luxembourg) and U16s (2nd place)(Gibraltar)
47. A large number of coaching, refereeing and table officials courses all run
successfully, working with UAs and local clubs
48. New U18 men’s team in extensive preparation for the European
Championships in July 2009 in Malta.
49. Damian Jennings – European CPD course successfully attended
50. Damian Jennings (assistant coach), Lucy Power (team manager) and Sarah
Wagstaff (equipment manager) successfully working with GB Women’s team

51 Three Welsh based players, playing a major part in the GB women’s
Basketball Team
52. Three Welsh based athletes competing successfully in the GB Wheelchair
Basketball team
53. Two U20 men training with the pre-Olympic Basketball Squad
54. Hayden Jones, very successful FIBA Europe referee, extensively used by
FIBA Europe
55. Will Jones, FIBA Europe technical adviser, extensively used by FIBA Europe
56. Successful commissioning of partners to work with BW, Enterprise Car Hire,
Physiotherapy support etc
57. Newi- teachers, ‘adds’ sessions courses and other significant developments
in north east Wales
58. Extensive developments with Cheshire Jets, which has enabled many
schools and new clubs to play more basketball in north Wales. SCW north Wales
officers have been extremely helpful and creative.
59. Excellent working relationship with Institutes of Higher Education (part of
Strategic Plan) links with UWIC, NEWI, Swansea University, Gwent University,
University of Wales Trinity College, Glamorgan University, Bangor University,
and Aberystwyth University
60.Coaches e-newsletter designed to engage coaches on-line
61. British Masters Competition agreed for June 2009 in Cardiff, Executive Board
working with coordinator Clive Jones and UWIC to facilitate the competition over
the weekend.
62. Confirmation of new insurance arrangements for all players of basketball, all
coaches, table officials and referees in Wales, including personal accident
insurance.
63. There has been a recent successful meeting and working arrangements
agreed with StreetGames – an initiative to enable disaffected youths to play
basketball in an informal setting (grant available)
64. A new competitions group has been established to coordinate the smooth
running and effective budgeting for all major internal competitions
65. A new arrangement for Basketball Wales to contribute to a new sports
degree in Glamorgan University has been agreed. BW will work with the
University to make this possible in the future.
66. New Director of Coaching post has been advertised, with an appointment
date set for April 2009
67. North Wales, West Wales and South Wales have all arranged their
respective cup final competitions as well as running very successful leagues with
more teams playing in 2009/2010.

68. The CEO has sent and received some 7000 emails, to all parts of the world
and to many different colleagues and Basketball Wales members. This
demonstrates the level of commitment to encouraging an open and transparent
system of governance for Basketball Wales
69. Well prepared U18 National Team scheduled for European Championships
In Malta, July 2009
70. Excellent news that the U18’s have a full international match v England as
part of their European preparation programme.
71. New sponsorship agreement with Etap hotels agreed, with provision of
special rates for members and support for the 2009 National Schools
Championships.
72. Television coverage of Celts wheelchair basketball Initiative BBC Wales.
73. Television coverage of UWIC archers 2009 successes BBC Wales
74. Internet coverage of Celts national league matches in WIS

We do hope that this helps to demonstrate that Basketball Wales has been
working extremely hard and has made significant progress in many areas. We
are determined to continue this progress and see basketball in Wales reach its
full potential
