Golf Report 2008 Men’s Golf Club Championship As always the Redcliffe Rose Bowl 36 hole qualifying day produced some first class golf. The Bowl was won by Andrew Farmer with the amazing scores of 63, 65 – A record for this event. Following this, the final 16 played off and this year we reverted back to an 18 hole match play final. The two finalists were Craig Morrison and Macdonald Menzies. Craig won the Championship by a margin of 3&2 after a wonderful game of golf. (Mac was 4 down after 11 having played level par.) Congratulations to Craig who is a worthy champion. Newton Shield Once again the Newton Shield team proved a force to be reckoned with in local golf but unfortunately once again were pipped at the post. As last year it came down to the final match, this time against Cochrane Castle away and sadly the home team prevailed to win our section. They were defeated in the play off by Paisley. Other Team Events We began the season by winning the Strathgryffe Trophy and reached the last 16 of the Mail on Sunday competition as did the ladies team. Individual Successes Mathew Clark won Renfrewshire County Championship, Glasgow Amateur Championship, Elderslie Trophy, and played for a Scottish select in Paris. He also did something of a Tiger Woods by winning the Renfrewshire order of Merit with 601 points. His nearest rival, in 2nd place, was Craig Watson of East Renfrew GC with 347.5 points and 3rd was our own Andrew Farmer with 256.5 points. He reached the 4th round of the Scottish Amateur and narrowly missed qualifying for the Knock out stages of the British Amateur at Turnberry Andrew Farmer won The Craigton Rose Bowl and was runner up in the Elderslie Trophy Colin Christie won The Northern Seniors Open
Ladies Golf The ladies Greenlees team were successful in retaining their place in the 1st division and the ladies team also reached the final 16 of the Mail on Sunday competition. The Briggs sisters continue to dominate ladies golf locally and fly the flag for us furth of Kilmacolm. Megan Briggs won the ladies club championship for the fifth successive year defeating younger sister Eilidh in the final. Megan also won the Renfrewshire County Championship again defeating younger sister Eilidh in the final. She won the West of Scotland ladies championship and was runner up in the Scottish Universities women’s championship. Appearances in the British ladies Open, Scottish Ladies open, Irish ladies amateur and Scottish ladies junior stroke play event all went to make up a very busy year culminating in the award of her second full cap in the home internationals in September. Eilidh Briggs won the Renfrewshire girls championship and was runner up in the Scottish schoolgirls championship. She was selected to play in the European junior Masters event in Paris and was also selected for the girls home international team. Along with Megan she has been playing regularly in the senior County team which was ultimately defeated in the finals at Inchmarlo. Both girls have been selected to join the SLGA training squads for 2009. Megan to join the National A squad and Eilidh the National B squad. Quite a remarkable duo I’m sure you will all agree. Juniors David Morrison won The Junior Championship for the third time, his brother Calum having won it on the four consecutive years before that. Stuart Nicol deserves a special mention for shooting a gross 65 off the yellow tees. Well done to Stuart. Seniors Stewart Mowat continues to organise the seniors section. The team I think it is fair to say finished in the lower half of the league but there is great enthusiasm and everyone enjoys their golf. Once again the Seniors open was a great success
