AFP is committed to excellence in providing the highest
quality services and products for our members and other
constituents. We are responsive to their needs and strive to
exceed expectations.
2009 was one of the most difficult years for fundraising that the charitable sector has ever experienced.
According to AFP’s State of Fundraising Report, it was the most challenging year in the past 10 years.
Based on anecdotal information from some of our most senior members, it may have been the most challenging time
in the past 40 years.

                                                                        MOVING
Despite these challenges, however, an extraordinary amount
of charitable giving occurred around the world. A majority of
charities still managed to raise the same amount of money or
more in 2009 than they did in 2008. Numerous multimillion-

dollar gifts were made. Success stories were still plentiful.
The fundraising profession is moving forward and rising
above the economic challenges of 2009 because people are

depending on us. Regardless of the economy, the homeless
need housing. The sick need cures. The hungry need to be fed.
The environment needs to be safeguarded. Workers need to be
trained. Millions and millions of programs and services need to
be provided. And in each case, they are.
All of this happens because fundraising professionals have the skills, knowledge and training needed to inspire
donors, and all of us at AFP are proud and humbled to have played a role in providing those necessities. In spite of
the economic difficulties of 2009, we provided more services than ever before—new and practical initiatives and ideas
that meet the needs of development professionals everywhere so they can raise the funds that support their critical
missions and causes.
We focused on connecting fundraisers to each other because we know that in this day and age, sharing knowledge
and experience is one of the most powerful ways to advance ourselves, our organizations and our profession. We
delivered new and cutting-edge educational programs that expanded the base of knowledge that the profession uses.
We also emphasized the online, on-demand member experience so that fundraisers could receive the training and skills Roberta A. Healey,
they need how and when they want. MBA, NHA, ACFRE

Hundreds of millions of people rely—every day!—on the services of the world’s charitable sector that is driven by
the fundraising profession. We have neither the time nor the luxury to rest on our laurels or feel sorry for ourselves
because of obstacles or difficulties. We must move forward, expanding on what we’ve done to meet the new
challenges of the future. We must do so with planning, deliberation and the highest ethical standards, but we always
must move forward.
As the chair and president and CEO of AFP, we invite you to review our work and how we helped move
fundraising and the charitable sector forward in 2009.

S ince its founding in 2000, the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Canada has provided an important service
not only to AFP’s 3,200 Canadian members, but also to the profession as a whole. We, the proud members of
AFP in Canada who work for a multitude of organizations and serve many important needs, consistently strive to
practice ethical and effective fundraising and to ensure that we are responsible and accountable to all of our various
stakeholders.
The Canadian foundation weathered the turbulent months of late 2008 and in 2009 because of the ongoing AFP Foundation for
support and commitment of our donors—our members. Once again we exceeded our Every Member Campaign Philanthropy–Canada:
goal, proving that as a team we can not only

                                                    Strengthening
rise to the challenge, but also continue to
move forward.
There is a shared trait among Canadians

                                                    the ProfeSSion
that has held true through the years and that
we see over and over in our AFP colleagues
and friends: a fierce loyalty to causes we
believe in and a determination to push the
limits and achieve great things.
In that spirit, the Canadian foundation
had a great 2009. Our priorities included translations from English to French, national scholarships, research
and a national career mentoring program. We were able to fund numerous scholarships to attend the Toronto
Fundraising Congress, National Philanthropy Day events and many other educational programs conducted by AFP
chapters across the country in conjunction with the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Canada.
The foundation would like to thank both A.K.A. New Media, which provided pro bono online giving websites
for all 15 professional Canadian AFP chapters, and Strategic Communications (Stratcom), which carried out two
telefundraising campaigns during 2009. Their important support helped the foundation reach its goals.
As the chair of the AFP Foundation for Philanthropy–Canada, I would be remiss if I did not take advantage of
this opportunity to express, on behalf of the foundation, our sincere and heartfelt thanks to AFP’s staff. We often Shauna Klein, MA
speak about the commitment and dedication of fundraisers and the difficulties we all experience, particularly in a Chair
tough economy. Our friends, and they are all friends, at AFP absorbed a harsh blow in 2009 and came out of it not
only without sacrificing any membership services, but also actually enhancing many of the existing membership ser-
vices, most notably the fabulous new website. We all owe them a huge thank-you for their incredible grace under
pressure and determination to help us be the best we can be at what we do. Here’s to a great 2010!
