2008 Weather Review

Above normal snow pack, late melt off and below normal to normal temperatures
during the 2008 fire season created an unusually quiet fire season across
Eastern Great Basin.

Winter 2007-2008
Winter across Eastern Great Basin
proved to be quite wet, with December-
February being the 11th wettest winter
for Utah in 113 years. Idaho, Wyoming
and Arizona were among the top 25
wettest in their respective records.
Snow pack peaked at between 120-150
percent of normal over most of the area.

March – June
Despite a dry March and April, snow
pack continued at or above 100 percent
of normal as temperatures remained
below normal for the region through
June, significantly slowing snow melt.

July – August
Moisture moved into southern/eastern
Utah in mid July decreasing fire danger.
Semi frequent dry cold fronts pushed through the northern half of the Great Basin
during July and August keeping temperatures near normal, while somewhat
suppressing moisture from moving north into the area.

September - October
The fall months continued mostly warm and dry, but with fire occurrence and
behavior remaining low.

Preparedness Level Review
Fire season started slower than usual jumping from Preparedness Level one to
Preparedness Level three on June 15. May and June were quiet while July
provided a steady stream of initial attack across most of the fire zones.

Eastern Great Basin stayed in Preparedness Level three until August 3rd when
fire activity caused a move to Preparedness Level four. This, however, was short
lived and the decline of fire starts and fire activity caused a return to
Preparedness Level three on August 8.

By mid-September fire activity again slowed and Eastern Great Basin returned to
Preparedness Level one on October 6th. Nationally, Preparedness Level five
was declared for only 22 days, with Eastern Great Basin not exceeding
Preparedness Level four.

                          2008 Season Review
The 2008 fire season was a relatively quiet one, caused by a cool, wet spring
and early summer, which delayed green up and the curing of fuels into late July
and August.

                                        4
Lightning caused fires totaled 835 starts for 25,321 acres. Human caused fires
totaled 826 starts for 120,391 acres.

Utah had the most fire starts with 999 ignitions, with Utah State/Private agencies
having 425 of the total. Idaho burned the most land, charring 105,050 acres with
the Idaho BLM burning 61,250 of that total.

The first large fire within the Eastern Great Basin occurred April 13th on Fort Hall
BIA lands in Idaho. The first Type 2 Team mobilization occurred June 16th on the
Dixie National Forest in Utah. The last large fire of the season occurred October
28th in Utah on Northwest State lands. A break down of large fires by month is
found below.
