Four Dharmas of Gampopa

Grant your blessings so that our minds may be one with the Dharma.
Grant your blessings so that Dharma may progress along the Path.
Grant your blessings so that the Path may clarify Confusion.
Grant your blessings so that Confusion may dawn as Wisdom.

Mahamudra Lineage Prayer

Great Vajradhara, Tilopa, Naropa, Marpa, Milaripa,
Lord of Dharma, Gampopa, Knower of the Three
Times, Omniscient Karmapa; Lineage holders of the
four great and eight lesser schools: Drikung, Taklung,
Tsalpa, Glorious Drukpa, and others; You who have
mastered the profound path of Mahamudra, Grant
your blessing that meditation be free from intellectualization.

As is taught, the essence of thoughts is Dharmakaya;
They are nothing whatsoever and yet they arise to
the meditator who reflects upon the unobstructed
play of the mind. Grant your blessing that I may
follow your tradition and example.

As is taught, detachment is the foot of meditation;
Attachment to food and wealth disappears to the
meditator who gives up all ties to this life. Grant
your blessing that the inseparability of Samsara and
Nirvana be realized.

Through all my births, may I not be
separated from the perfect lama and so enjoy the
glory of the Dharma. May I completely accomplish
the qualities of the path and stages, and quickly attain
the state of Vajradhara.

The Sutra of the Heart of Transcendent Knowledge
PRAJNAPARAMITA

Thus have I heard, once the blessed
one was dwelling in Rajagrha at
Vulture Peak mountain,
together with a great gathering
of the Sangha of Monks
and a great gathering
of the Sangha of Bodhisattvas.

At that time the Blessed One
entered the samadhi
that expresses the Dharma called
“profound illumination,”
and at the same time noble
Avalokiteshvara,
the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, while
practicing the profound
Prajnaparamita, saw in this way:
he saw the Five Skandhas
to be empty of nature.

Then, through the power of the
Buddha, venerable Sariputra
said to noble Avalokitesvara,
the Bodhisattva Mahasattva,
“How should a son or daughter of
noble family train who wishes to
practice the profound Prajnaparamita?

Addressed in this way,
noble Avalokitesvara,
the Bodhisattva Mahasattva,
said to venerable Sariputra,
“O Sariputra, a son or daughter
of noble family who wishes
to practice the profound
Prajnaparamita should see in this way:
seeing the five skandhas
to be empty of nature.

Form is emptiness;
emptiness also is form.
Emptiness is no other than form,
form is no other than emptiness.
In the same way, feeling, perception,
formation, and consciousness are
emptiness. Thus, Sariputra,
all Dharmas are emptiness.

There are no characteristics.
There is no birth and no cessation.
There is no impurity and no purity.
There is no decrease and no increase.

Therefore, Sariputra, in emptiness,
there is no form, no feeling, no
perception, no formation, no
consciousness; no eye, no ear, no
nose, no tongue, no body, no mind;
no appearance, no sound, no smell,
no taste, no touch, no dharmas;
no eye dathu up to no mind dhatu,
no dhatu of dharmas, no mind
consciousness dhatu, no ignorance,
no end of ignorance, up to no old
age and death, no end of old age
and death, no suffering, no origin
of suffering, no cessation of suffering,
no path, no wisdom, no attainment
and no non-attainment.

Therefore, Sariputra, since the
Bodhisattvas have no attainment,
they abide by means of prajnaparamita.
Since there is no obscuration of mind,
there is no fear, they transcend falsity
and attain complete Nirvana.
All the Buddhas of the three times,
by means of prajnaparamita,
fully awaken to unsurpassable,
true, complete enlightenment.

Therefore the great mantra of
prajnaparamita, the mantra of great
insight, the unsurpassable mantra,
the unequaled mantra, the mantra
that calms all suffering should be
known as truth, since there is no
deception. The prajnaparamita
mantra is said in this way:

OM GATE GATE PARAGATE
PARASAMGATE BODHI SVAHA

Thus Sariputra, the Bodhisattva
Mahasattva should train in the
profound prajnaparamita
Then the blessed one arose
from that samadhi
and praised noble Avalokitesvara
the Bodhisattva Mahasattva, saying:

“Good, good, O son of noble family,
thus it is. O son of noble family,
thus it is. One should practice the
profound prajnaparamita just
as you have taught, and all the
tathagatas will rejoice.”

When the Blessed One had said this,
venerable Sariputra and noble
Avalokitesvara the Bodhisattva
Mahasattva, that whole assembly and
the world with its gods, humans,
asuras, and gandharvas rejoiced and
praised the words of the Blessed One.

Refuge and Raising Bodhichitta

Until I reach Enlightenment, I take refuge in all the
Buddhas and in the Dharma and all the noble
Sangha. By the merit of accomplishing the six
perfections, may I achieve
Buddhahood for the benefit of all sentient beings.

May all sentient beings enjoy
happiness and the root of happiness,
May they be free from suffering
and the root of suffering,
May they not be separated from
the great happiness, devoid of suffering.
May they dwell in the great equanimity,
free from passion, aggression and prejudice.

Visualization of the Diety

On the crown of the head
of myself and all beings,
On a moon, on a lotus, is a HRIH.
Chenrizig arises from this.
He radiates clear white light.
He gazes with compassionate
eyes and loving smile.
He has four arms.
The first two are folded in prayer.
The lower two hold a crystal
rosary and white lotus.
He wears an upper robe of doeskin,
His head ornament is Amitabha,
Buddha of Boundless Light.
His two feet are in the Vajra Posture.
A stainless moon is his backrest.
He is the essence of all those
in whom we take refuge.

Prayer

Lord, not veiled by any fault, white in color,
Whose head a perfect Buddha crowns in light,
Gazing compassionately on all beings,
To you, Chenrezig, All-seeing One, I prostrate.

Seven Branch Prayer

With joyous faith I prostrate
To the Noble All-seeing One
And to all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
Of the ten directions and three times.

I make offerings both actual and imagined
Of flowers, incense, lights, perfume,
food, music, and much else.
All you assembled Noble Ones,
please accept them.

From beginningless time until now,
I confess all the ten unvirtuous acts
And the five actions of unlimited consequence
I have committed while lost in obscuring passions.

I rejoice in the merit of whatever virtue
Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Bodhisattvas,
And ordinary people have gathered
Throughout the three times.

I pray you turn the Wheel of the Dharma
In the form of the greater and lesser vehicles
For as many different aptitudes as are present
In the motivations of all sentient beings.

I beseech you not to pass into Nirvana,
But, until Samsara is completely emptied,
To look with great compassion
on all sentient beings who are lost
in an ocean of frustration and sorrow.

May whatever merit I have accumulated
Become a cause for the enlightenment
of all beings. May I become, without delay,
Foremost among protectors of beings.

     Prayer to Chenrizig

I pray to you, Guru Chenrezig
I pray to you, Yidam Chenrezig
I pray to you, Perfect Noble One Chenrezig
I pray to you, Lord Protector, Chenrezig.
I pray to you, Lord of Love Chenrezig.

Buddha of Great Compassion,
hold me fast in your compassion,
From time without beginning
beings have wandered in Samsara,
Undergoing unendurable suffering.
They have no other protector than you.
Please bless them that they achieve
the omniscient state of Buddahood.

Compelled by evil karma, gathered from
beginningless time, sentient beings through the force of anger, are born as hell beings,
And experience the suffering of heat and cold.
May they all be born in your presence, Perfect Diety.

Compelled by evil karma, gathered from
beginningless time, sentient beings'
Through the force of greed, are born
in the realm of hungry ghosts
And experience the suffering of hunger and thirst.
May they all be born in your presence, Protector.

Compelled by evil karma, gathered from
beginningless time, sentient beings through the force of stupidity,
are born in the animal realm
And experience the suffering
of dullness and stupidity.
May they all be born in your presence, Protector.

Compelled by evil karma, gathered from
beginningless time, sentient beings'
Through the force of desire,
are born in the realm of humans
And experience the suffering
of constant toil and poverty.
May they be born in the
excellent pure land of Dewachen.

Compelled by evil karma, gathered from
beginningless time, sentient beings
through the force of jealousy,
are born in the realm of demigods.
And experience the suffering
of fighting and quarreling.
May they be born in your realm, the Potala.

Compelled by evil karma, gathered from
beginningless time, sentient beings,
Through the force of pride,
are born in the realm of gods
And experience the suffering
of change and falling.
May they all be born in your realm, the Potala.
May I myself, through all my existences,
act in the same manner as Chenrezig.
By this means may all beings be liberated
from the impure realms, And may
the perfect sound of your six-syllable
mantra pervade the ten directions.

By the power of this prayer to you,
Most Noble and Perfect One,
May all beings to be trained by me
take Karma and its effects
Into account and practice skillful acts diligently.
May they take up the Dharma for the good of all.
By having prayed like this one-pointedly;
Light shining from the holy form
Removes all impure Karma and bewilderment.
The outer realm becomes the realm of bliss.
The body, speech, and mind of beings within it
Become the body, speech, and mind of Chenrezig.
All knowledge, sound, and all appearances
become inseparable from emptiness.

Everyone appears in the form of Chenrezig,
All sound is the sound of his mantra,
All that arises in the mind
is the great expanse of wisdom.

             Closing Prayer

Through virtue of this practice may I now quickly
Achieve the All-seeing One's great state.
And to this same state may I come to lead
Every being, not one left behind. With the merit of these thoughts and words
May I and every being to whom I am joined,
When these imperfect forms are left behind,
Be born miraculously in the realm of bliss. Crossing ten stages directly after birth,
May the emanations fill the ten directions
in service, for the benefit of all.
Through this virtue, may all beings
Gather the accumulations of merit and awareness;
May they attain the two Supreme Kayas
Which arise from merit and awareness.

As Bodhichitta is so precious,
May those without it now create it.
May those who have it not destroy it,
And may it ever grow and flourish.

By this merit may all attain awakening,
May it defeat the forces of confusion,
From the stormy waves of birth, old-age, sickness and death,
From the ocean of Samsara may we free all beings.
