Georgia History

Georgia is bordered by South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, and Florida and by the Atlantic Ocean.
Early Georgia history began with Mound Builders.They lived in Georgia about 900 A.D.They farmed and built earthen mounds as temples or burial grounds.
The Creek and Cherokee Indians lived and farmed in Georgia during the 1500’s They were later forced off their land by white people.
At different times during the 1500’s, three groups of explorers claimed Georgia. They were the Spanish, the French, and the English.
In 1733 James Oglethorpe settled Georgia for the country of England.
Georgia was named for King George and was originally a colony for people who could not pay their debts.
Cotton was a very important crop for Georgia in the 1800’s. It was often grown on plantations and picked by slaves.
During the Civil War, Georgia pulled out of the Union and became part of the Confederate States of America.
Georgia’s state bird is the Brown Thrasher.
The state flower is the Cherokee Rose.
The state tree is the Live Oak.
The state fish is the Large Mouth Bass.
Georgia has three branches of government. They are Legislative, Judicial, and Executive.
Georgia’s governor is Sonny Perdue.
The state insect is the Honeybee.
The state fruit is the peach.
The state crop is peanuts.
The state capital Georgia is Atlanta. It began as a railroad town, and there have been several other capital cities .
Georgia’s new flag was adopted in 2001.
Savannah was the first city built in Georgia. It was the first planned city.
The best thing about Georgia is it’s “Home Sweet Home!”
