     Services:      Childcare for infants’ age 6 weeks to children up to 3 years of age
                    who are not potty-trained. Operates October-May, Monday-
                    Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

     Eligibility:   Laurel Oaks students are given first priority and then it is open to
                    the public. Private pay, also accepts reimbursement for services
                    through the Department of Job and Family Services.

Helpline      Telephone service which provides information, support and
              referrals to community resources for families, friends and

Family Options         Program which provides personalized consultation to help
                       families plan for care; a source of practical information and
                       emotional support.

Family Support Group          Small discussion groups for family care givers and
                              friends provide an opportunity for mutual support
                              and understanding.

Educational Programs          A variety of educational programs for families, care
                              givers and professionals are offered continually
                              throughout our area.

Safe Return   A nationwide, community-based safety net designed to help
              register & identify individuals who are memory impaired due to
              Alzheimer’s disease or a related disorder. A 24-hour toll-free 800
              line enables police and private citizens to return wanderers to their
              homes.

Resource Center        Provides a multi-media reference library and free literature
                       for family care givers, students, professionals, and other lay
                       persons.

Early Stage Strategy Group Group meetings for persons diagnosed with early
                           stage Alzheimer’s disease & their caregivers; focus
                           on helping participants adjust to the diagnosis, plan
                           for the future and enjoy life to the fullest extent
                           possible.

Memories in the Making        An art program for the individuals in the early and
                              middle stages of Alzheimer’s disease which

                              provides an opportunity for self-expression through
                              participation in the visual arts.

Eligibility:   Program and services are available to family care givers, friends,
               and professionals coping with Alzheimer’s disease or related
               disorders; some fees may apply.

               is to keep children safe while helping families stay together, learn
               healthy living habits, and become a stronger family unit. Even in
               situations where a child must be temporarily removed, we work
               hard to help families overcome their problems. Some of those
               problems may include: drug/alcohol addiction, financial problems,
               domestic violence, anger management issues, lack of parenting
               skills, and more. We create a plan with each family to help them
               address these issues, and then link them with other agencies and
               services, depending on their needs. Most families that we work
               with want to improve their situation and are willing to cooperate
               on achieving their plans. When families are not able to improve
               their situation so that their children may return home safely, the
               agency may seek permanent custody and develop a stable,
               permanent plan for the children through adoption services.

        Financial Literacy: Provides knowledge and resources to all Highland
County residents on financial education. Offered in workshop formats and as
one-on-one counseling. Primary focus is on developing a spending plan to avoid

advertised in our offices, on local radio stations, and in local papers. Flyers are
also distributed to all financial institutions prior to classes.

       HATS-(Highland Appalachian Transportation System): Provides
transportation to and from medically affiliated visits for eligible Highland County
residents. Transportation for grocery shopping is also provided every Thursday to
residents over the age of 60. Contact the Transportation Department.

       Head Start: A comprehensive preschool (ages 3-5) developmental
program operating throughout the county, providing services in education, social
services, health (including medical, dental, and mental health services). We also
serve children with disabilities. Half day services available. Contact Head Start.

       HEAP-Home Energy Assistance Program: Assistance to households
who have less than a 10-day supply of bulk fuel or have a 10-day shut off notice
from a utility company, electric or gas company. Program runs November
through March and June through August. Eligibility determined by meeting
income guidelines. Contact the Outreach Department.

        Help Me Grow Newborn Visit: Provides home visits to first time and
teen mothers throughout the county. The Registered Nurse providing the home
visits shares the information regarding community services and available
resources as well as answers any questions which the new parents have. Contact

       Highland Heights Apartments: Housing complex located on Harry
Sauner Road in Hillsboro. These two and three bedroom units are reserved for
people with low to moderate income. No direct subsidy available to customers.

        Housing Rehabilitation Program: Housing rehab services to income
eligible residents within targeted areas in the county with grant funds under CHIP.
Services may include the following: roof, wiring, septic, plumbing, and any other

        Senior Companion: Gives an added stipend to assist the needs of
individuals over 60 years of age and who have a low income. They must be able
to spend four hours a day, five days a week doing light household chores in
homes of persons over 60 or disabled to provide companionship and to assist the

        Smoking Cessation: Classes are offered free to those who smoke and are
interested in quitting; Cessation techniques include the American Cancer
Society’s “Freshstart” Program and the American Lung Associations “Freedom
from Smoking” program. These programs consist of 6-8 one hour classes over a
6-8 week period and it teaches the participant quitting techniques and how to
maintain a smoke-free lifestyle. Both programs offer follow-up and support

        Weatherization Program: Provides weatherization repairs and insulation
of homes of elderly and low income families. Services include the inspection of
the heat exchanger, safety control, venting, flue pipe, chimney, wiring, exhaust
equipment, ductwork, and thermostat of the home. Also examination of the
carbon monoxide production and combustion efficiency will occur. Caulking,
glazing, weather stripping and insulation of attic and basements/crawl spaces with
the goal of reducing fuel consumption and lowering heating bills. Contact the

        WIC-(Women, Infants, Children Program): This program provides
women (pregnant, postpartum, and breast feeding), infants 0-12 months and
children up to the age of five, who are medically certified as being at nutritional
