The BET Awards were established in 2001 by the Black Entertainment Television network to celebrate African Americans and other minorities in music, acting, sports, and other fields of entertainment over the past year. The awards are presented annually and broadcast live on BET.
Ceremonies Locations
The inaugural ceremonies, in 2001, were held at the Paris resort on the Las Vegas Strip. From 2002 through 2005, the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood hosted the ceremonies. The 2006 and 2007 awards were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

previous year. Missy Elliott has been nominated for a BET Award for Best Female HipHop Artist every year since the awards ceremony started in 2001, except for 2005. In 2007 there was no award category for Best Female Hip-Hop Artist, there was only the BET Award for Best Male Artist which was renamed the BET Award for Best HipHop Artist.
