                                                                                                                                                        n our last Connections newsletter, the
                                                                                                                                                        Maui Chamber of Commerce provided
                                                                                                                                                        a host of articles, ranging from the
                                                                                                                                                    Farm Bureau Benefit Dinner to comments
                                                                                                                                                    by Mayor Alan Arakawa and Governor
                                                                                                                                                    Linda Lingle, as well as from our new
                                                                                                                                                    president. One of the major elements of
                                                                                                                                                    that newsletter was of course the political
                                                                                                                                                    report card that summarized the COMPAC
                                                                                                                                                    (Chamber of Maui Political Action
                                                                                                                                                    Committee) thoughts on the performance
                                                                                                                                                    to date by our elected officials at both the
                                                                                                                                                    state and local level.
                                                                                                                                                       This year’s COMPAC results were gen-
                                                                                                                                                    erally well received, and the Maui News
                                                                                                                                                    did a front-page story on the ratings for
                                                                                                                                                    the category of economic development.
                                                                                                                                                    The article attempted to explain to the
                                                                                                                                                    reading public the basis for the grades
                                                                                                                                                    given by COMPAC. In general, the
                                                                                                                                                    responses from some of the elected offi-
                                                                                                                                                    cials were good, based upon their percep-
                                                                                                                                                    tion of their progress to date in this area of
                                                                                                                                                    concern. Some of the comments, however,
                                                                                                                                                    were off the mark and frankly did not
                                                                                                                                                    address the issue as economic develop-
