GPRS on a laptop
Below is some information on how to configure your laptop for use with a GPRS-
enabled mobile phone, for Internet access:

 On the PC, go to the Networking section of the Control Panel (Start > Settings
       > Control panel > Network)
 Select "Make new connection" (this should start a setup wizard)
 Choose "Dial up to Internet"
 Choose the "connect via a modem" option
 Enter the telephone number to dial as *99# (No area code, and turn off
       dialing rules)
 Select the username and password for your Network Operator (GPRS settings
       here)
 When complete, go to Control panel > networks, and right-click on the icon
for your GPRS connection. To need to set the following: Connect Using -
select your modem (infrared / USB / Bluetooth)
You need change one other thing - to do with your modem settings. Do this as
follows:

 Go to Start > Settings > Control panel > Modems
 On the Modems tab, select your modem, and press Properties
 On the Advanced tab, you need to enter string in "Extra initialization
commands". This initialisation string will need to be entered as:
       +CGDCONT =1,"IP","apn.address" - you should substitute apn.address with
the name of the GPRS APN that you wish to connect to. For o2 Internet
access, this is mobile.o2.co.uk and for Vodafone, this is internet. See the
table on our GPRS page for the UK settings. Also, note the space before the
       =1.

To set whether you dial using the modem over GPRS, or a different connection,
check the settings in Internet Explorer > Tools > Internet Options > Connections.

To make the connection, you'll need to have your mobile phone switched on, set-up
for Internet access, and set to operate as a modem (IR/USB/Bluetooth). See our
Connect page for help on setting up a mobile for GPRS, and our GPRS page for help
with UK settings.
                                  Worth considering!

Get a USB modem for your laptop - This plugs into your laptop's
USB socket and offers fast data access (up to 1.8Mbps). These
provide you with high-speed Internet access. There are two we
                                         recommend:

          T-Mobile Mobile Broadband with their £15 a month package (3GB
                                  monthly download limit)
 3 Broadband to Go, with prices starting from £10 a month on
contract. A pay-as-you-go option is also available from
                                    www.three.co.uk.

GPRS on a Windows Mobile Pocket PC
Below is some information on how to configure your Windows Mobile Pocket PC for
use with a GPRS-enabled mobile phone, for Internet access.

This section makes the following assumptions:

 You have a GPRS-enabled mobile phone with an Internet-enabled SIM card
 You can establish a connection between your phone and PDA (by Bluetooth,
        cable or Infrared)
 You are using a Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC machine

If you're struggling with any of the above, try our Windows Mobile Connectivity page
first

To set up a Pocket PC for Internet access over GPRS, on the Pocket PC, do
the following:

    1. Go to Start > Settings, go to the 'Connections' tab, and select 'Connections'
    2. Under "My ISP", select "Add a new modem connection"
    3. Enter the name of your network operator, e.g. "Orange" and select the
modem connection you want to use ("Generic IrDA" or Bluetooth), then press
       'Next'
4. In the phone number field, enter *99# , and then press 'Next'
5. Enter the username and password required to access the Internet Access
Point (APN) you're trying to connect to (check the APN listings on our GPRS
   page) .

6. Before pressing Finish - You need to press on the 'Advanced' button to
change some settings - untick "Wait for dial tone", and add the following
string to the extra dial-string commands:
   +CGDCONT =1,"IP","apn.address" - you should substitute apn.address with
the name of the GPRS APN that you wish to connect to. For o2, this is
mobile.o2.co.uk and for Vodafone, this is internet. See the table on our
GPRS page for the UK settings. Also, note the space before the =1. Press 'OK'
to close the Advanced screen, then press Finish.
  7. Close the 'Connections' dialog with the 'OK' button

Issues

Windows It seems that in Windows Mobile 6, the "Extra dial-string modem
Mobile 6 commands" box has been removed, making it difficult to add a
issue modem string to send to a GPRS mobile phone.

Thanks to site visitor Dave R for suggesting the following work-
around. Note that this involves editing the registry on your device,
and you do so at your own risk!

                   1. Install a Registry Editor. If you're a PC user, you can use
CeRegEditor on a PC to change the registry on a connected
                                      Windows Mobile 6 device
                            2. Edit the following part of the registry:
                          HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\Unimodem\Init
                3. Add a new string to that part of the registry using Edit > News
                                             > Stringvalue
                4. Carefully enter the string you want to send to your mobile, as
per the screenshot below, e.g: AT+CGDCONT
                                      =1,"IP","apn.address"
                 5. Press OK to close the dialog, then click on the green star in
the menu to save the setting and reset your Windows Mobile.

Update: We heard from a site visitor with the following. Doesn't
match our experience, but may help you. "the new string needs to
have < cr> at the end of it to work"

Access internet in PC using GPRS enabled mobile phones

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recently I happened to go through some forums and found queries related to how to
access internet facility in PCs using mobile phones (GPRS). I have been successfully
using GPRS service of AIRTEL (Bharti Cellular Ltd., Mumbai) to connect my PC to
internet via my mobile (Nokia 6610i). Hence I thought of giving my ideas as a blog. In
this article I am mainly concentrating on helping people to access GPRS using Nokia
models that use data cables for PC to mobile connectivity and using Windows98/NT/XP.

1. First thing you have to do is activating internet connection in your mobile. The
procedure varies with the mobile operator. The current procedure for Airtel and Hutch are
as follows.

Airtel: Send 'GPRSACT' as SMS to 511(12 Rs per day). After getting confirmation, SMS
'MO' to 501. Airtel will send the GPRS settings for your mobile. After saving the settings
restart the phone and open services/wap/web/internet menu from where you can access
internet using your mobile.

Hutch: Send SMS 'act hw' to 997 and follow instructions. After conformation send
'WWW' as SMS to 111. For information visit
http://www.hutch.in/PlanetHutch/Plan...utchaccess.asp

BSNL: You can see the procedure for BSNL here http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/

TELENOR PK
send to 131 {internet nokia mobile model}
www.telenor.com

2. In order to connect your mobile phone to your PC or laptop, you need to buy a data
cable for your mobile. You will get an installation CD along with the datacable.

3. Next step is connecting internet to your PC.

To see how to connect using Samsung models refer http://support.t-
mobile.com/knowbase...ic/tm21053.htm
In this section I will explain how to connect using Nokia models that use data cables for
PC to mobile connectivity.
First of all install the Connectivity Cable driver. Installation of cable driver will initiate
automatically on inserting the CD. Continue with the installation procedure.

After installing the cable driver, right click and open the contents of the data cable
installation CD. Double click and run the file 'PC Suite'.

After installing PC Suite, run 'PC Suite' from the start menu or desktop icon.

Select 'manage connections'

Select 'Serial cable'

Click 'configure'.

Select 'Prolific USB to Serial Bridge'

Remember the number of this port, say com3(this will be required for installing modem)

Go to control panel and open 'Phone and Modem options'

Select the tab, modems.

Click on add.

Select the check box 'don't detect my modem, I will select from a list' and
click next.

In the window that opens select 'Nokia'

In the menu on the right side select the model of your phone.

Click next.

In the next window it will ask 'In which port do you want to install the modem?'

Select the same communication port that you specified for 'serial cable', say com 3.

A warning message will appear asking if you want to proceed.

Select 'continue anyway'.

Now you have completed installation of drivers for GPRS.

You can setup an internet account (discussed below) and start connecting to internet.
Note: In some computers you can start surfing the net immediately after setting up a
connection and clicking on the dial button. But in some other cases computer needs to be
restarted before starting to browse internet. Make sure you remove the data cable from
the system while restarting. Connect the data cable to the system only after loading of all
the items in the 'notification tray' is complete (not only the first time, the cable should be
removed always while restarting)

Some error messages
'Subscribe to GPRS first': When you try to access GPRS while your account is still not
activated.
'Check homepage address': When you have not activated the settings for your phone.
'GPRS not available': You may get this error message when you are out of coverage area.
Some times this message may appear even if there is coverage, but due to poor quality of
input data (you could be inside the coverage area, but still be not able to access GPRS).
Another occasion when this error message occurs is when you recharge mobile after the
expiry of the validity period. In this case you have to remove and reinsert the SIM to
access GPRS.

Data Cables for Nokia Models

Various models of connectivity cables and their supported phone models are given
below. You have to identify which of these connectivity cables support your phone
model. Before buying also check if your computer has a USB port. If your computer don't
have a USB port, then you can buy serial cable. Both USB as well as serial versions are
available for these models.

[edit] Connecting to the Internet using BSNL Prepaid
GPRS
BSNL has come out with the option of GPRS over the prepaid connection. But
difficulties were faced by many to connect to the Internet. Even the settings that were
downloaded from BSNL site failed the phone to connect to the Internet. The following is
the actual working settings on a Nokia3650 phone so that it would connect through
GPRS.

Steps to be followed to browse Internet over GPRS using a BSNL South India Prepaid
Connection:

       Message “GPRSPRE” (SMS) <without quotes> to 53733.
 After sometime (may take up to 48 hrs) a message would be received saying that
GPRS has been activated for the phone.
 Press the menu button of your phone; go to Tools -> Settings -> Connection ->
            Access Points.
 Click on Options. Select New Access Point -> Use Default Settings
       Give the following values:

  - Connection Name -> BSNL GPRS
  -       Data Bearer                          ->   GPRS
  - Access Point Name -> bsnlsouth
  -       User Name                            ->   BLANK
  -       Prompt Password                      ->   No
  -       Password                             ->   Blank
  -       Authentication                       ->   Normal
  -       Gateway IP Address                   ->   10.31.54.2
  -       Homepage                             ->   http://bsnl.co.in/
  -       Connection Security                  ->   Off
  -       Session Mode                         ->   Permanent

 Press Back. A new access point is created now.
 Now using the default browser that came with the phone or with the custom
browser installed later Internet could be accessed over the GPRS.
 If the default browser is used, open it and click on Options, go to settings and
select the default access point as BSNL GPRS. Modify the remaining options if
            needed.
 Now this browser can be used to browse the Internet.

Using a phone with in built modem one can browse the Internet using their
computer.
The following steps should be followed to use a computer and connect to the Internet
using the BSNL GPRS connection on the phone. The following settings are for a
Windows XP computer.

 Connect the bluetooth dongle to a USB port of the computer and install any
       drivers if required.
 Pair your phone and the PC over bluetooth. (For exact details of how to pair the
PC and your phone, please refer to the user manual that came with the PC and the
       phone.)
 Once pairing is over the computer would recognize the phone as a modem over
bluetooth connection also and will start the services required for it over a
       particular COM port.
 Now Open System Properties (Win Key + Pause/Break is the easiest way to do
this). Click on Hardware tab and then on Device Manager button.
 This will open a window where all the hardware on your PC is listed. Click the
„+‟ to expand the Modems and select the “Standard Modem over Bluetooth link
       #x”
 Double click on it. The Properties window for this modem willopen. Click on
Advanced tab. In the Extra Initialization Commands textbox fill –
       “AT+CGDCONT=1,"IP","bsnlsouth"” <without quotes>.Without this string
the computer will not connect to the Internet, but it will throw a PPP Link error.
Please note that the “bsnlsouth” mentioned above is the access point name in your
GPRS connection settings of your phone. (or gprssouth.cellone.in)
 Click OK, close the Device Manager. * Go to Control Panel -> Network
Connections. Click File -> New Connection. In the New Connection Wizard that
       comes up, follow these steps:

  - Click Next
  - Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
  - Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
  - Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
  - Enter “BSNL GPRS” in the ISP Name text box and click Next.
  - Enter “*99#” in the Phone Number text box and click Next.
  - Chose the connection availability as per your discretion and click
Next.
  - Leave User name and password blank. Uncheck the check boxes if
needed and click Next.
  - Tick the check box to have a short cut on your desktop and click
Finish.

 Switch on the bluetooth radio of the phone.
 Now double click on this connection‟s icon and click on dial. It will dial and
connect the computer to the internet!!!

These procedures and settings help the BSNL subscriber to connect to the Internet over
GPRS using a BSNL South India prepaid account. The above procedure works equally
well for Post paid subscribers and for connection to PC/ laptop with USB cable.Specially
useful for heavy users who have subscribed to BSNL post paid unlimited GPRS usage.
I used the same settings on a Sony Ericsson Z550i and it gets connected without much
difficulty.

Also works with Samsung E-840 using the access point 'gprssouth.cellone.in'.

These day, after completing my graduation from MANIT Bhopal,
I am in Muzaffarpur my home town. Internet Connection in this small town is a big thing.
Thanks to GPRS of AirTel and my Motorola cellphone, I have internet connection.
Internet connection using AirTel GPRS is almost free, just you have to pay 250 per
month in the form of talktime. There is unlimited internet access and unlimited download
in this plan. So you don‟t have to worry about your time limits while accessing the
internet. The installation is very simple, just you have to follow 4-5 steps.
I am giving the process of installation of internet using AirTel GPRS.

Requirements :: A pc or labtop, a cell-phone with GPRS facility, a data cable to connect
the cell-phone to labtop or pc if your cell-phone has bluetooth or infra-red facility then
you don‟t need datacable.

 First of all you have to call customer care (121) to activate your GPRS. It may
       take 2 or 3 days.
 After your connection is activated they send you some settings as per as your
mobile phone, you have to enable those settings.
 Now install the driver of the data cable and connect your cell-phone to the pc or
       labtop.
 Just in the driver software you will get the internet settings options, enable those
options and double click to start. you will have Connecting Device : Your
mobile‟s modem ISP Name : Airtel (or anything you like)Phone Number :
*99***2# Username and Password : blank
 Connect to the dial-up account. You will be connected at 115.2 kbps (However it
       never happens).

Now you can access internet connection in your pc or laptop for a minimal amount.
However the biggest problem with this connection is its slow speed. But this generally
happens with any wireless connection. Also, the connectivity depends upon the AirTel
Signals in your area.
