Montclair State is New Jersey's second largest and fastest growing university, offering the advantages of a large university — a broad undergraduate curriculum with a global focus, a wide variety of superior graduate programs, and a diverse faculty and student body — combined with a small college's attention to students. Currently the University is in the midst of an ambitious expansion program that will enable it to accommodate at least 18,000 students by 2008, the year of its centennial. The program includes the recruitment of outstanding new faculty and approximately $250 million in capital construction. With more than 250 majors, minors and concentrations, the nation's only doctorate in pedagogy, and a unique interdisciplinary doctorate in environmental management, MSU provides a comprehensive array of academic programs while remaining accessible and affordable. Through its six schools and colleges--the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the College of Science and Mathematics, the College of Education and Human Services, the School of the Arts, the School of Business and The Graduate School--Montclair State University prepares its students to lead productive and rewarding lives, and to participate responsibly in civic society. From its founding in 1908, the history of Montclair State University has been one of change, growth and distinction. Proud of its heritage and prepared to respond to the challenges and opportunities of the twenty-first century, Montclair State continues to be a major contributor to the cultural, economic and educational life of the region. Entering her third season as the head coach of the Montclair State women’s lacrosse program, Nicol Parcelluzzi has had a start that very few coaches would expect to have in their first two years. Since taking over the Red Hawks in July of 2005, all Parcelluzzi has done is guide MSU to a 29-7 record, an .806 winning percentage which also includes two conference championships and the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship. In addition, under her watch, Montclair has placed a total of eight players on the IWLCA All-Region Team and last year had two players selected to the Division III All-American Team.

High School: In her first season at all Parcelluzzi did was guide MSU to the finest season it Ward Melville, NY had seen to date. During the 2006 campaign, Montclair State compiled an 15-3 mark, setting the season record for victories. The Red Hawks won their final 12 games of the year - another record and their .833 winning percentage was one of the best in Division III. In addition, Montclair posted a perfect record during the regular season in the Skyline Conference and remained that way as it captured its first league title by outscoring its opponents, 40-11 in the Skyline Tournament. The Red Hawks then put the exclamation point on its banner season by winning the ECAC Division III Upstate Championship in just its second postseason appearance. In addition to its team success, Montclair also had eight players named All-Conference and four chosen to the IWLCA Boardwalk All-Region Team. For her efforts, Parcelluzzi and her assistants were named the Skyline Conference’s Coaching Staff of the Year. It was a remarkable beginning for the new coach but her second season proved to be even more successful. The 2007 season brought another banner year for Parcelluzzi. Leading Montclair to a 14-4 mark, including several landmark victories during the regular season, the Red Hawks were ranked in the Top 20 by the IWLCA for the first time in program history. Again, Montclair went unbeaten in the Sklyine Conference and then topped Stevens in the conference tournament final for its second straight league crown. Montclair would earn another first- a berth in the NCAA Division III Tournament where the Red Hawks advanced to the second round before falling to Hamilton College. Another eight players were named to the Skyline All-Conference Team with four being named to the IWLCA All-Region Team. Two of those players, Brianna Gillin and Dina Morrone were then chosen to the organization’s All-America Team marking the first time in school history that the Red Hawks received that honor. Parcelluzzi came to MSU from Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Maryland where she spent two seasons as an assistant coach at the Mount under head coach Courtney Martinez Connor. During her tenure, the Mountaineers won back-to-back Northeast Conference regular season and tournament titles, and advanced to the first round of the NCAA Division I tournament. Prior to her two seasons at the Mount, Parcelluzzi was an assistant coach for the women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse teams at Marist for two years. At Marist, Parcelluzzi helped the Red Foxes reach the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament each season, including the championship game in 2003. A four-year letterwinner on the Rutgers women’s lacrosse team, she helped the Scarlet Knights to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance in her senior campaign. That year, Parcelluzzi was named to the Mid-Atlantic Regional first team All-America and Most Valuable Player and participated in the annual North/South game.

After several seasons of building, the Montclair State women’s lacrosse team finally reached its goal in 2007. The Red Hawks, in addition to successfully defending their Skyline Conference championship, added a first for the program as it qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament reaching the second round before closing out the year at 14-4. With several members of the squad now graduated, it would be easy to say that the expectations for the MSU would not be a lofty as they were the past few seasons. But don’t tell that to the 2008 version of the Red Hawks. Sure it will be difficult for Montclair to replace a senior class that helped put MSU on the map in terms of Division III women’s lacrosse. Despite the losses of two All-Americans (the first in the history of the program) Brianna Gillin and Dina Morrone, as well as another All-Region selection and three players (ann Daily , Shauna Brocklebank and Nicole LaRocca) that combined for nearly 475 points the past four seasons, the Red Hawks still have several players that have made significant contributions over the last two years as well as an incoming class that should be able to help fill in the holes that were left behind. Starting on the offensive end where Montclair brings back five of its top eight scorers. Leading that group is senior Jennifer Tanis (Oak Ridge, NJ / Jefferson), who earned First-Team All-Region honors from the IWLCA in 2007. A First-Team AllSklyine pick as well, Tanis finished fourth on the team in points (52), third in goals (35) and led the team in ground balls (55) while finishing second in caused turnovers (40). Fellow classmate Bethany Blaine (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) put together her second straight solid campaign. Blaine scored 32 points and registered 39 points in her 18 games in 2007. Blaine also finished second to Tanis in ground balls (37) and recorded 27 caused turnovers. Nicole Roselle (Pine Brook, NJ / Montville), the third of five seniors on the roster, started all 18 games last season. Roselle scored 11 goals and finished with 16 points. Junior Marykate DiBenedetto (Cinnaminson, NJ / Cinnaminson) earned her way onto the Skyline FirstTeam. DiBendetto scored 28 goals and added 25 assists for 53 points, fInishing third on the team in points and second in assists. She was ranked sixth in the Skyline in assists per game at (1.39). Sophomore Morgan MacPhee (Toms River, Nj / Toms River East) had a huge impact for MSU in her first season as she scored 23 goals, including three in the Red Hawks’ 19-9 win over Eastern Connecticut in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Sophomore Lauren Adams (Jackson, NJ / Jackson) figures to seen an increased role this season after she appeared in12 games last year scoring three times. Defensively, the Montclair still figures to be solid despite the loss of Morrone as well as goalkeeper Kristin Kuhmann, who set every record during her four seasons. Senior Cristin Bentz (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) was named to the Skyline Conference Second Team in 2007. Bentz started all 18 games and registered 29 ground balls and 11 draws in addition to causing 19 turnovers. Senior Kaite Castellanos (Marlton, NJ / Cherokee) started 17 games last season and finished fourth on the team in casued turnovers with 19. The defense will also get a boost from the return of junior Melissa Deangelo (Toms River, NJ / Toms River South), who missed nearly all of last year after being injured in the season-opening game against Drew. Deangelo started a combined 34 games in the 2005 and 2006 campaigns. Sophomore Jamie Hudacko (Montville, NJ / Montville), who appeared in 12 games in 2007 gives Montclair another veteran in its defensive alignment. The goalkeepeing postion is perhaps Montclair’s biggest hole to fill. After your years of having Kristin Kuhmann in the net, the Red Hawks will now look to a pair of freshman to fill the spot. Talia Katz (Lower Merion, PA / Lower Merion) and Kelly Jurczynski (Ewing, NJ / Ewing) will battle for the starting role. MSU’s schedule is perhaps the most daunting in its history. The Red Hawks open the season with three straight road games as it travels to Drew and Lycoming College before heading to Florida to face an always-difficult Dickinson team. Returning home the slate doesn’t get any easier as MSU tangles with FDU-Florham in its home opener. Montclair faces Eastern Connecticut in a rematch of their NCAA Tournament game on March 27 before opening defense of its Skyline Conference title on April 1 versus Farmingdale State. The second half of the season will be a test for the Red Hawks. In addtion to their Skyline opponents, Montclair takes perennial NCAA Tournament participant Rowan as well as the last two Division III national champions in Franklin and Marshall (2007) and The College of New Jersey (2006) on April 13 and 22, respectively. The Skyline Conference Tournament is slated for April 30 with semifinal action and the championship game on May 4.
