					                             Onion Root Tip Mitosis Activity
Introduction:

Mitosis is the process where cells divide to make new cells, allowing a multicellular organism to
grow. Onions grow by performing mitosis, and the tip of an onion root is where fast growth
occurs. Mitosis has 5 stages: Interphase, Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, and Telophase.
Stained cells can be focused on and observed in all 5 stages of mitosis.

Purpose:

 to focus on and sketch onion cells in all 5 stages of mitosis.
 to estimate size of cells and total magnification

Materials:

Microscope, Prepared slide of onion root tip, colored pencils

Procedures:

        1. Obtain onion root tip slide and microscope
        2. Focus on high power, find a cell in interphase.
        3. Draw the cell and label length in microns and total magnification.
        4. Find a cell in prophase. Draw the cell and label length in microns and total
           magnification. Also, label chromosomes.
        5. Find a cell in metaphase. Draw the cell and label length in microns and total
magnification. Also, label chromosomes and spindle.
        6. Find a cell in anaphase. Draw the cell and label length in microns and total
magnification. Also, label chromosomes and spindle.
        7. Find a cell in telophase. Draw the cell and label length in microns and total
           magnification.

Data:

Five Drawings, well organized, with total magnification, size, and labels.

Conclusion (Write in complete sentences; paragraph form)

 Describe mitosis and why is it done
 Approximately what percent of onion cells where undergoing mitosis? (count how many out of
        forty ,then divide)
 According to above answer, do cells spend most of their life in mitosis or resting?
 Do cells change in size as they undergo mitosis?
