This in contrast to scalars which have no direction such as energy. In 2 or 3 dimensions, a vector is usually represented graphically as an arrow which contains information on both the amplitude and direction. A longer arrow represents a larger amplitude of the vector. In modern physics vectors are used in their general mathematical sense and can have higher dimensions than 3, and don’t neccesseraly have a direction in the spatial sense. For instance special relativity introduces the 4 vector which contains information both on space and time (t,x,y,z). Another example is electron spin which is a 2 dimensional vector specifying how much spin up and spin down an electronic spin state has.
