                                   Preface

Shortly after my mother left, I found her family records in the living room of our
Goodsprings home. There were two typewritten pages with a lot of handwritten
records in between the lines. I was impressed that these were a bit tacky and
should be re-typed in order to improve the appearance.

After completing the typing, I was less than satisfied because of the meagerness
of my mother’s record that contained only a name, date of birth, married to
Frank, date of marriage, and date of death. I felt strongly motivated to add more
detail about her life on earth and so I added a few words to her records about this
wonderful person. While at it, I then went on to add a few words about an
outstanding father.

Then, my thoughts turned to the rest of my family who are also pretty special
people. I concluded that all of my family members have done and are doing
different and interesting things and I felt motivated to add something to their
record also. And that was the beginnings of “The Family of Frank and Maggie”.

Subsequently, I have added to Maggie’s Records from input received other family
members and I expect to continue as new family members come and as other new
or corrected information comes to me. Thanks to Sister Pat, the 1999 revision
now includes all (I believe) of the descendants of Frank and Maggie.

I know that there are many mistakes and omissions in this document.
Consequently, I would appreciate receiving input regarding these so that I can
update this document. Too, you may feel a need to revise the record of yourself or
another family member from time to time and I would like to encourage you to do
so. I plan to publish again from time to time.

I never expect to complete this story because it continues to evolve on a day by
day basis. And even as this family continues to live and grow, so will the volume
of this document and also the influence that comes from the lives of Frank and
Maggie.

Choat, Frank Nelson & Margaret Tallent

Frank Nelson Choat -- born 3/1/1900 in McMinn County, Tennessee. Son of
William Thomas & Martha Jane Choat. Died 10/5/1978.

Was a "Car Peck" on L & N Railroad as a young man. Lost job during crash of
1929 and never returned to RR. Tried, unsuccessfully, several things such as
groceryman, dairyman, etc. Became a steel mill worker in Chicago, IL in 1935
and retired from that position.

He was a man of exceptionally strong personal values. He believed and lived
honesty, responsibility, helping a neighbor, supporting his family, and a man's
word should be as good as his bond. During the early years of marriage, he was
an active and effective leader in the church and community. Was a great Choir
Director at Goodsprings Baptist Church, McMinn County, Tennessee!

Margaret (Maggie) Haseltine Tallent -- born 10/28/1899 near Franklin, N.C.
Daughter of Joshua & Louisa Clampett Tallent. Housewife and mother of 12
children. She attended Cowee Elementary School where she completed the 7 th
grade 3 times. Sadly, there was no higher educational opportunity available to
her.

Maggie was a kind, gentle, exceptionally poised lady! She was a woman who
"always did what was right" and taught her children to do likewise. She was a
superb manager and mother. She was firm in the guidance of her family, yet
flexible enough to allow her children to grow up.

Frank and Maggie were married - May 25, 1919 -- During the early years they
lived primarily in McMinn County, Tennessee. From 1935 till retirement, Frank
worked in Chicago, IL and Maggie stayed in Tennessee to look after the children.

On Thanksgiving Day, 1985 she was in the hospital in Athens, TN. During the
day she visited with all of her living children for the last time. During the day she
said that she felt OK but “tired”. She died the following night --- 11/27/1985.

Maggie’s Testimony at Goodsprings Baptist Church, May 13 1981.

Brother Condee asked me to give a little testimony. I don’t know why. I told him I
couldn’t talk much, but I’d try. Sometimes I think the reason I’m bad to talk, I’ve
stayed around Arbutus so much.

I want to tell everybody how much I appreciate this church.

I’ll start back in my young Christian life. I was saved when I was 12 years old,
around that time in a little church in North Carolina. I was baptized in a little
creek about like this one out here, maybe a little bigger. I belonged to that
church, real active in it.

so many things happened in that church and I remember it real well. It’s been a
real blessing to me, precious memories to me.

Then at the age of 19, I moved to Etowah, and a little later I met Frank and we
got married. I came out here to live and a few months later, I moved my letter
from that little church in North Carolina, don’t remember the month and I’ve
been here ever since.

And I want to say I have really enjoyed this church. It’s been a blessing to me. I
don’t know how I’d got along without it. It’s been a real blessing all the way down
life and I’ve learned to love all the people. I can’t tell all the good things that I
have thought about this church. Another thing, we’ve raised our children in this
church and they’ve all been saved and that’s a wonderful thought to me.

And I want to say I can’t say all the things this church has meant to me. It’s
helped me carry on through lots of things – in my hard and rugged times in life
sometimes. It’s really been a blessing all through life.

And I want to say to the young people: I’m so proud that they are stepping out
and doing things so when we Senior Citizens are gone, there’ll be someone to
carry on the church of tomorrow.

And I want you to pray that if it’s the Lord’s will, I’ll have the strength for a little
more time to be a part of this church of which I am so proud.

                                            Margaret H. (Maggie) Tallent Choat

P.S. Mother gave this testimony on Senior Citizen’s Day at church. I wish all of
you could have been there to here her.
                                        Oveline

Site of the Home of Frank and Maggie, McMinn County, Tennessee
On March 2, 1921 Frank and Maggie purchased 15 acres of land from John C. and
Mattie E. Armstrong. They built a home on this property and raised their family there.
This home was destroyed by fire about 1940 and was subsequently rebuilt on the same
site. This property may be located by going west from Etowah, TN on eithth street,
continuing on County Road 660 about 2 miles to Goodsprings Baptist Church; turn right
on County Road 609 approximately 0.6 miles. Frank and Maggie’s is on the left side of
the road as shown on the following map.
In 1999, Frank and Maggie’s home was still standing. It was maintained completely
furnished and with utilities connected just as they left it.

                              Work History of Frank Choat

1918 to 1929 – L & N Railroad, Etowah, TN
Was a “car peck” – that’s a carpenter that built railroad cars. I remember him bring
his tools home when laid off. I was impressed that he had two large toolboxes full of
the nicest tools. In subsequent years, these all disappeared one at a time until there
  were none left.
1929 – 1935
  1. Operated a small dairy farm. Had about 5 or 6 cows and sold milk in Etowah. One
of the cows was named Flossy and another was Beauty.
  2. Did odd jobs --- carpentry work, painting, and farm labor. Wages were about $1 per
     day.
  3. Owned and operated a grocery store in Etowah. Was not very successful. Had a
     greyhound dog about this time.
  4. Subsequently, worked in ahardware store, Owenby’s grocery store, and the A & P
     store in Etowah, TN.
1935 – 1940
Worked at Wisconsin Steel in Chicago, IL. In the beginning he was a laborer that
repaired boilers and was paid a huge wage of $5.50 per day. Later was promoted and
became “stationary engineer” at the plant powerhouse.
March 1940 – September 1940
Was laid-off at Wisconsin Steel approximately March 1, 1940 and came home to
  Tennessee.
A few days later, oldest daughter – Arbutus – was hospitalized for an appendectomy.
At that time, Arbutus was working at John Norris’ resturant in Athens. While off
from work, Oveline substituted for her at the resturant.

Then, a few days later, the house and almost everything it contained burned.
Shortly thereafter, he purchased a 100 plus year old church building, (Jones Chapel)
moved it to the Frank Choat homeplace and built a new home from the materials.
Cost of the church building was $50. Lumber from the church was moved to the job
site with Charles Armstrong’s pickup truck (a 1939 or 40 Ford) Roofing materials
were hand made from trees cut on the property. Construction work was done by
Frank, his brother Henry, sons Ernest, Nelson, & Bill on a daily basis. Additionally,
neighbors helped from time to time. A lot of neighbors were there on one day to apply
the hand-made oak boards to complete the roof. Electrical wiring was installed by
Niles Harris and was paid for by oldest daughter – Arbutus.
In the Fall of 1940 the family moved into the partially completed home.
On or about the same day, a “return to work” notice was received from Wisconsin
  Steel Company.
September, 1940 – 1968
Continued work at Wisconsin Steel in Chicago, IL until retirement time of age 65. At
that time (1965) the company requested that he remain on the job for another year and
he agreed. This process was repeated for the two subsequent years until the reached the
mandatory retirement age of 68.
1968 to- to 1978
Retired in Tennessee.

                                       The Fire

In the early spring of 1940, we (Frank Choat, along with two sons Ernest, &
Nelson and maybe uncle Henry) were hauling wood from the back side of the
Frank and Maggie home with a team of horses that were borrowed from Charles
Armstrong. As we came into sight of the house we observed flames coming out
the roof. I can’t recall the details of the time that we sighted the fire until it was
completely burned.

I do remember spending that night with Martha Lou & Charles. Too, I remember
returning to the site on the following morning riding the “Lady” mare.

Try as we might, the house burned completely. Nelson drew water from the
cistern and Daddy was on top of the house until it became too dangerous to stay.

Dan and Bill were at Aunt Ruby’s at that time.

Oveline was present and went to Grandpa’s for help.

I think Ollie Knox was there.

The Orginal Home of Frank and Maggie

Purchased 15 acres, March 2,1921 from John C. and Mattie E. Armstrong. Paid $900, “cash in
hand”.
Built two rooms first and then an el. Occupied (probably partially finished) prior to birth of oldest
daughter – Arbutus – on September 1, 1921.
Completed house of 4 rooms, porch across all of front, large back porch. Rooms were large with
high ceilings. Attractive brick columns at front. Had two fireplaces connected to a common
chimney. Grates in fireplaces so that coal could be burned. Didn’t work too good – smokey and not
too warm.
Maggie reported that she held a lamp so that Frank could drive nails as they worked during the
night. Except for Nelson, all of their children were born at home in this house.
In 1940 there were 11 children and two adults living in this home. There were five beds. Two in
the front bedroom and 3 in the room between the living room and kitchen.
The kitchen had a wood burning stove, a cabinet, and a large round table. The back porch was
large, screened in and a great to sleep during the summers.

This home burned to the ground, about March 1940. Essentially nothing was saved.

Arbutus – Stayed in Athens with the Norris family (her employer) during the
week. Came home for the weekend.

Martha Lou --- was married and lived at the Armstrong homeplace. Also living
there, were: Ms Mattie Armstrong ( Charles’ mother), and sisters Johnnie,
Kathryn, Sadie, and brother Jack. Charles was head of household.

Ernest E. Choat -- might have stayed with Uncle Henry and Aunt Betha. Went
to school and helped with rebuilding the house. Sometimes with Martha Lou.

Pat – stayed with Uncle Willie and Aunt Edith Choat who lived in the “Weaning
House” at that time.

Bill – Stayed with Aunt Lucy and Uncle Jake Shamblin. They lived on 9th street
in Etowah, TN at that time. Their daughter Pauline along with her husband A.
R. Melton and son Jakie were there. Too, their son Hoyt, age 16, was there also.
Bill was 10 years old at that time. Hoyt had a new “Studebaker” that he drove to
school.

Daphne – Aunt Nancy’s.

Dan -- Uncle Henry’s

Gene -- Uncle Henry’s

It was 2 weeks before graduating from high school.

Family was foremost interest in her life, but she also worked until retirement
for the Tennessee Department of Employment security and twenty years for
the First National Bank and Trust in Athens, Tennessee. Was active in
Goodsprings Baptist church; especially as member of the Choir and Sunday
School teacher.

Remembers that her father bought her a new dress when she graduated
from elementary school in spite of the fact that money was very, very scarce.

Harold Massingale -- Born in McMinn County, Tennessee, July 30, 1923.
His friends (and he had many) knew him as “Breezy” although I don’t know
why. He was an articulate, witty, easy-going person that was nice to be with.
He was a dairy farmer who bought and sold livestock, took pride in owning
beautiful horses and was an avid fox hunter. Died 11/1985.

Many years past his death, I learned the he once gave me his last $5 at a
time when I was hospitalized with polio and he thought that I needed it more
than he did.

Milestones in the Life of Ernest E. Choat

1926 Born, December 25, 1926 at home as were all of my parents children.
Dr. Akin was there. It was a very rainy night and he got stuck in the fornt
yard.

1926 – 1932
Happy child living in a prosperous family. We had a new 1925 or 1926 model
T Ford that I can’t remember but have seen photos in the L&N Depot. The
photo includes my father, mother and all of my older brothers and sisters.
Too, I vividly remember my father owning a new 1928 or 1929 Chevelot
sedan.

We had one of a few telephones in the community. It was one of those that
hung on the wall and required cranking to activate. It was a “party line”, i.e.
one that is shared with others. In our case it was 5 or 6. Two, fun things
about the phone was eavesdropping on other parties and ringing “central” to
request the time of day.

During this time, we had a very early model record player – called a
“victrola”. It required cranking to make operable. Some of the records that
we enjoyed were: “Let Me Call You Sweetheart” and “Maggie”.

1938 --- Saved as a “Born-Again-Christain” --- August ????, 1938. Baptised
9/4/38 Goodsprings Baptist Church as recorded in church minutes.
Baptismal was held in a small creek that ran alongside the church front. I
was 11 years old – nearly 12. More detail about this in “Testimony of a
Christian”, Footprints of Ernest & Kathleen.

                             Choat: Allison Olivia

Allison Olivia Choat -- was born on March 31, 1984, ten weeks before her
expected due date. Born so early, there was a good chance that she would
not survive--or that if she did, it would be with a handiap or severe
developmental delay. Allison proved these negative prognoses wrong by
coming home a few weeks later and saying her first words, “Thank you,” at
the age of four months. She graduated from Webb School of Knoxville in
2002 as Salutatorian of her class and a National Merit Scholar.

She is currently (12/20/04) enrolled in the Double-Degree Program at
Oberlin College and Conservatory of Music in Oberlin, Ohio. She is focusing
her studies on language and literature (specifically Latin and Italian) in the
college and on vocal and music drama performance in the Conservatory.
She hopes to graduate with a BA and BM in the 2006/2007 school year. In
the meantime, she enjoys cooking and photography, and tries to make time
as often as possible to be grateful as her first words suggest.

Funeral Service – Robert Choat (as read by minister – 9/13/90)
Robert Choat, I never called him Robert, or Bob – Few people in McMinn County
ever did. He was “Boodge”. Although mis-named, “Boodge” he became and there
was only one Boodge.
In fact everyone who knew Boodge Choat liked Boodge Choat. He was the kind of
person whom people liked to be around. He was always cheerful; a positive
attitude everywhere; enthusiastic; upbeat. Wherever he was, there was always a
group of people. There were stories, jokes and humor. His stories were never put-
down – they were funny and uplifting; sometimes insightful and helpful. You
know its always been said that there is “truth in jest”. But it was very important
to Boodge that he never put anyone down to make a point.
As I though about him – and respected him – and loved him – I could almost be
exasperated at him almost at the same time. Boodge Choat was not a man to be
possessed or controlled. And I’m not sure if that was his greatest strength or his
greatest weakness. He did not fit schedules too well, especially if he met someone
who needed him or needed to be talked to or someone he chose to have a cup of
coffee with. He was so spontaneous with his life, he could easily adapt his
schedule and change. He easily adjusted. He was so fluid in his lifestyle.
Boodge was a “people” person. Never met a stranger. Everyone he met was
special and he treated them special. He was a soft touch. Boodge was a
vulnerable man and some got upset by his unbridled generosity. Always giving,
always sharing – Not a selfish bone in his body.
He loved his family – Children and sisters and brothers, nephews and nieces.
They were all important to him and they were a source of comfort and joy.
Boodge Choat had an inner strength that few knew about. He was always living
on the edge. Always sharing a story, getting to know you – and you would walk
away, wondering who he was. He was private about his inner-convictions. But as
far as I know, he loved his Lord and his church although he didn’t talk about it
very much.
When I was his minister, we had a chance to talk a lot. One conversation that I
remember in the Old Fire Hall, where he had his office, he talked about his church as a
people who cared, a group of people who affirmed and he loved the friendliness of the
church which affirmed people and never put them down.
I think of Boodge Choat as a man after God’s own heart. Intense reckless, a free spirit,
lover, friend, kind and I saw some of God in him.
During these past few weeks he showed his stuff. He never complained; always
interested in others. And one thing was for sure, the verses of scripture shared with him
were appreciated. They comforted and helped our friend Boodge, the man who helped us,
the man who gave to us.
We thank God for him and now we thank God for calling him home.

Origin of the Surname “Choate” .

In the beginning of civilization, when only a few humans were on earth
everyone could be adequately identified by a given name only. Therefore,
when Eve gave birth to her first son he was given a single name of Cain
(Genius 4:1). Likewise, when the second child was born he was named Abel
(Genius 4:2). At that time, there were only four people on earth, Adam, Eve,
Cain & Able and they were all adequately identified by a single given name.

With the passing of time, and with a continuous increase in number of people on
earth a shortage of given names developed. Once two people were given the name
of John it became necessary to devise ways to distinguished between the John
that lived on one side of the river from the John that lived on the other side of the
river. Thus the “surname” as is known today, originated from a need to properly
identify people as individuals. Thus the “surname” was added for the purpose of
making it more specific and of indicating family relationship or descent. The
hereditary surname as we know it today dates from about 900 years ago.
The origin of most surnames fall into four general groups:
   1. Those formed from the given name of the father. Examples: (a) Joshua the
son of Nun or (b) Richardson “the son of Richard”.
    2. Those arising from bodily or personal characteristics. Examples: (a) Simon
the Zealot or (b) Armstrong may have orginated as Charles with Strong
       Arm.
    3. Those derived from locality or place of residence, such as Jesus of Nazareth
       – John1-1-45 reads: “Philip findeth Nathanael, and saith unto him, We
have found him, of whom Moses in the law, and the prophets, did write,
Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” or (b) Judas of Galilee
    4. Those derived from occupation such as Smith, Taylor, Barber, and
       Shepherd.
The names of Choate and Chute 3 are believed to be of common origin and to
have been derived from the place of residence of ancestors living in Chute in
Wiltshire, England. The names of Choat, Chewte, Chewt, Choote, Choot, Chut,
Chute, Choate and numerous others are found in ancient British and early
American records. All of these are believed to be a corrupted form of Chute.
In America today, the two most accepted forms are Chute and Choate.
