CAREER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (CDP)
2008 CAREERS IN THE ARTS SUMMER INSTITUTE
EDUCATOR APPLICATION
The Center for Arts Education’s Career Development Program (CDP) is pleased to
announce the 2008 Careers in the Arts Summer Institute (CITASI) for middle and
high school educators. The program’s goal is to expand and deepen awareness and
connection of students, teachers, counselors, administrators, and parents to the many
career opportunities in New York City's over $21.2 billion arts industry. The 2008
Summer Institute, the only one of its kind in New York City, will be limited to 25
teachers, administrators, school counselors and parent coordinators. The enclosed
guidelines and application outline the program and provide detailed instructions.
The Center for Arts Education (CAE) is a not-for-profit organization committed to
restoring, stimulating, and sustaining quality arts education as an essential part of every
child’s education. CAE provides information and resources that demonstrate the
benefits of and need for arts education as part of a quality, balanced education.
CAE also identifies and supports exemplary partnerships and programs that
demonstrate how the arts contribute to learning and student achievement. CAE is
dedicated to influencing educational and fiscal policies that will support arts education in
all of the City’s public schools. Since its founding in 1996, CAE has invested nearly $40
million in the NYC public school system to support arts education partnerships and
programs.

PART I: GUIDELINES
A. OVERVIEW / PROGRAM CRITERIA
An integral aspect of the Career Development Program (CDP) mission, and our goal for
the Careers in the Arts Summer Institute, is to encourage educators to create career
development activities in their schools, embed career development in their lessons and
expand the walls of the classroom to include worksites as outside centers of learning.
Through a series of professional development activities focused on exploring careers in
the arts and related industries, educators are exposed to the many careers associated
with the arts allowing them to better assist students in exploring career options. The
institute includes a course of study that focuses on facilitating CDP’s career
development curriculum and creating and/or enhancing a career development
component with a focus on the arts in their school. All educators will receive CDP’s
teaching guides and student handbooks, and will participate in meetings with arts and
post-secondary school admissions professionals as well as eye-opening seminars on
the economic impact of the arts and related industries in New York City. The Institute
will also include visits to some of New York City’s top arts-related businesses in the for-
profit and not-for-profit sectors.
Participating educators are expected to do the following:
1. Participate in all Summer Institute activities set to take place:
August 11-13, 2008
9:00am – 4:00pm each day
2. Develop an action plan to create or enhance a career development component that
focuses on the arts in their school.
3. If you will be representing a school that has been selected to participate in CDP’s
Student Internship Program in 2009, you must also serve as additional support to
the designated School Based Team.
The Center for Arts Education will provide:
1. Student and teacher curricula that complies with the New York State Learning
Standards and the SCANS (Secretary’s Commission on Achieving Necessary
Skills) skills and competencies. Each of the participants will explore the various
aspects of employability training, life skills, and arts & arts-related occupational
opportunities.
2. Training for the facilitation of career development activities in the arts.
3. Visits to arts related businesses and cultural organizations.
