Dear Newman Friend,
Welcome to Newmanopoly!

Inside this program you will find details of all of the exciting things that await you
at the eighth annual Newman Gala—the Newmanopoly—on Saturday, October
23, 2010 at the Ritz-Carlton. We are honored that you would choose to bless us
with your support of the Catholic Student Center at Washington University and
in turn, we’d like to honor you with a night of fine dining, dancing, and an exciting
auction.

Inside, you’ll find a schedule for the evening as well as the list of auction items
available for bid. Please bring this booklet with you to the event so you’ll have a
handy auction reference in hand as you peruse the items.

The Gala is more than an annual fundraiser. It is a celebration of community and
an affirmation that hundreds of people believe in and support the CSC’s mission
of helping form students intellectually, morally, socially and spiritually so that they
can become moral and spiritual leaders in church and society for the 21 st Century.
The Gala is the culmination of countless gifts of time, treasure and talent
contributed by numerous people—the various committees that organize and plan
the event, the many individuals who procure auction items, the students and
adults who volunteer the night of the event, and the supporters of the community
who generously contribute financial resources.

The Gala continues after the evening has ended, too—when Mass is celebrated at
the CSC the next day, when a student in search of support finds a home at the
CSC, when a young adult joins with other CSC community members in service
halfway around the world. These things occur because of the outpouring of
generosity at the Gala from all of you.

Thank you for sharing this very special night with us.

   2010 Newman Award
           Recipients
 Rev. Phil and Mary Hengen
In recognition of an extraordinary service to fully realize the mission of the
                       Newman Community at Washington University

For over a decade, Rev. Phil Hengen has served as the deacon for the Catholic Student
Center. By his side, supporting him and supporting the CSC, has been his wife, Mary. The
pair have been an integral part of the staff and community, and the abundance of love they
share is evident in everything they do.

Although Phil is often at the forefront of the community during Mass, much of his and
Mary's service goes on behind the scenes. The two of them are active contributors to the
CSC's Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults program and have prepared dozens of engaged
couples through the marriage preparation process. Mary and Phil frequently give up their
weekend plans so Phil can perform weddings and baptisms for CSC members and alums.
Mary is donates her services as a wedding coordinator whenever Phil performs a
wedding. They've hosted many of the long staff meetings that happen at the end and the
beginning of semesters. In addition to all the work they do for the CSC, Phil and Mary
remain very active in the greater Church and in their community. Phil is an advocate for
the Archdiocesan Marriage Tribunal and is the Director of the Office of Child and Youth
Protection, and Mary is a hospice social worker at SSM Hospital. Together they give
marriage enrichment workshops at outlying parishes.

As Phil said in a homily this past January (in reference to a child's gift of a crayon drawing):
"It's a priceless gift, because it's given in love, and it's received in love. What really makes a
gift a gift is the love in which it is given." Phil and Mary, you are priceless gifts to the CSC.

                                                                                                 7
Thank you for all the love you've given to the students and to this community. The CSC is
so blessed to receive your gifts.

             Ministry
Where does all this Gala money go? Some of it goes to the Ritz for all this
amazing food and atmosphere. After other Gala expenses (the DJ, sound
equipment, invitation printing and mailing, etc.), everything else goes towards
CSC operations expenses. For the most part, that means the CSC staff and
facility, the core elements of this ministry. This ministry is about relationships
and connection—through Mass, Bible studies, service trips, programs, retreats,
speakers, events, and just hanging out. For those relationships to form and
those connections to blossom, the CSC needs great people on the staff and a
welcoming facility for the students.
How are we doing? See for yourself (this is just a taste):

 Music and Liturgy Appeal
Blessed John Henry CardinalNewman, who was officially beatified by Pope
Benedict XVI on September 19, 2010, is the founder of the proud tradition
of Newman Centers across the country. It is from this tradition that the
Newman Club began in 1948 at Washington University in St. Louis.
Cardinal Newman wasn’t just a leader; he was also a prolific writer of essays,
poems, songs, and hymns. He believed that an integral part of igniting and
sustaining the Catholic faith in college students was music. With this in mind,
he composed “Lead,” “Kindly Light,” and “Praise to the Holiest in the
Height,” hymns that are still sung today.
This is something we see today at the Catholic Student Center. Almost
everyone in the congregation (someday we’ll get to 100%!) sings at Mass.
Although this is somewhat remarkable, it’s the goal of the music ministry to
ignite the spirit of song among the congregation.
And yet the music and liturgical ministries have room to grow. Recognizing
this need, the CSC has already started to answer the call. Hiring a full-time
music director gives students more one-on-one time to increase their
understanding of the theology behind the music and to improve their musical
abilities.
With your support, students could attend and lead pastoral music
conferences. An expanded liturgical ministry could help to train students to
run Mass and become certified for various liturgical duties—a certification
that they could take to their future parish when they graduate from college
and move on.
There are also logistical needs behind this appeal, the primary one being the
piano in the chapel. The current piano is on loan and will soon be rescinded.
The CSC is trying to be a good steward in determining the next step, and
your contributions can help.
I hope you can honor Cardinal Newman’s legacy by raising your paddle in
support of the music and liturgy appeal. The levels for giving are $2500,
$1000, $500, $250, $100, and $50.

                                                                            15

constantly strive to be the most enjoyable and exciting a cappella group on
campus and in the St. Louis area. The performing members of the Pikers at the
Newmanopoly are Anthony Bernatas, (’12) Zach Dumey (’12), Chethan Rao

         Additional Information
                                     Raffle
Raffle tickets will be on sale at the Gala until 7:45.
The raffle is executed using a random number generator and projected on the
big screen in the ballroom during the program. Although the presenter will
control the “slot machine” function of the display, they have no actual control
over the digits themselves (the number is randomly selected immediately
before the “slot machine” starts moving).
Prizes will be awarded in the following increments. If fewer than 300 tickets
are sold, the grand prize of $3,000 will replace the last prize awarded.

              Wine [and Coffee] and Win
The wine and win section from last year has been expanded to include artisan-
roasted Tesoros del Sol organic coffee from Costa Rica (three 12-ounce bags
= one bottle of wine). Accompanying the wine/coffee are sealed gift cards, gift
certificates, and scratch-and-win lottery tickets.
Most of these can be used out of town as well as in St. Louis, and they range in
value from $5 to $200. The most expensive bottles of wine are less likely to
have the higher-value gift cards attached (but there’s still a chance!) Each
combo—wine/coffee plus mystery gift card—is $50. You may not collect your
winnings until checkout opens at 8:30.

             Silent Auction Rules
     1. Bidders must be present at the Gala to bid on auction items. If you
cannot attend the event, you may have a proxy bid and pay for items
at the Gala, but you may not bid remotely.
     2. Each item has a bid sheet nearby. Those desiring to bid may do so by
writing their paddle number (most important!), last name, table letter,
and the amount of their bid on the bid sheet.
     3. Please note the minimum opening bid as written on the bid sheet.
Each new bid must be written on the next blank line available on the
sheet. Follow bid raise increments as indicated.
     4. Auction sections begin to close at 7:45. The last section will close at
         8:15.
     5. After the auction has closed, the bid sheets will be delivered to the
winning bidder’s table (not directly to the winning bidder). Winning
bids will also be logged in our auction database, so if you can’t
remember what you won at the end of the night, an Auction Official
will be able to tell you.
     6. In the event of a dispute, an Auction Official shall determine the
winning bidder. If the winning bidder’s name and number is illegible on
the bid sheet, the winner will be the second-place bidder.
     7. Unless otherwise specified, all auction items and services are to be
         used by October 23, 2011.

                             Feedback
An online survey about the Gala will be sent out to all Gala attendees who provided
an e-mail address. Below are a few simple questions to prompt written feedback
about the 2010 Newmanopoly event; feel free to tear out this page and give it to
Jamey or drop it in the offertory basket.

             1. Would you attend the Gala again? Why or why not?

             2. What would you change to improve the Gala?

             3. How did this Gala compare to similar events/fundraisers
                you’ve attended?

             4. Would you be interested in being involved in the planning and
                execution of the next Gala?
