History of the Fredonia State Blue Devil
F
redonia State and her teams have long been called the Blue Devils. But what is the history of the nickname?
As part of the university’s 175th anniversary celebration in 2001, archivist Joanne Schweik researched volumes of the campus newspaper, The Leader, and found that the Blue Devil moniker dates back to the 1930s. Schweik wrote: “When Joseph Keyser was appointed Director of Physical Education at Fredonia Normal School in September 1935, he became THE sports department. He held the first school-wide basketball tryouts and was probably responsible for the acquisition of new blue-and-white uniforms ... “During the 193637 academic year, Coach Keyser called for cheerleaders and school spirit. At this time, the (men’s) basketball team -- actually, the only intercollegiate team at that time -- was referred to as the Keyserians, Fredonians, Blue-and-White, and Normalites.
Schweik went on to write that Blue Jackets was put into use immediately, but suddenly -and without explanation -- was dropped. For the first two games of the 1936-37 season, neither moniker was used. It was as if, Schweik discovered, “the (Leader) contest had been forgotten.” Then, starting with the third game of the 1936-37 season, the Blue Devils nickname resurfaced, and the nickname has stuck to this day. Schweik’s research found what seems to have been the first illustration of a Blue Devil in a September 1952 edition of the campus newspaper. She wrote: “Whether there is now an official Blue Devil seems very much in doubt, as this particular demon seems to have assumed many forms throughout history and at whim.”
Arbitrariness and whimsy were put to rest in the spring of 2007 when the athletic department introduced the university’s first official Blue Devil logo. The new primary mark and a “The January 27, 1936 Leader announced a variety of secondary marks were drawn by contest to name the team. (The) February 3 Pheonix Design Works, in consultation with (edition) gives some of the suggestions and athletic department staff members, and (the) March 10 (edition) announced that the approved by university administrators. Gold committe had selected two names: Blue Devils accents were added to the logo to go along and Blue Jackets.” white, black, and two shades of blue.

Program History
The 2007-08 Fredonia State Blue Devils enter the season as the defending SUNYAC Tournament champs. Road wins over Buffalo State, Oswego, and Plattsburgh last season resulted in the program’s third conference title, and its third trip to the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Jeff Meredith is back behind the bench for his 20th season -all but the first year in program history. By his second season, he had the Blue Devils in the SUNYAC Tournament. By his sixth year, his team was playing for the NCAA championship after winning the first of their three conference titles. He enters the 2007-08 season 70th on the alltime collegiate coaching list in wins for all divisions, and ranks even higher -- he was 28th before the start of last season -- among Division III coaches. Meredith was chosen 1994 NCAA Division III American Hockey Coaches Association Coach of the Year. Six times a Fredonia State player has been chosen as an All-American, and five players have been inducted into the Fredonia State Hall of Fame. Due to such a long and successful tradition, student and community support has been -- and remains -- high. The Blue Devils are one of the top draws in the nation each year, with the approximately 1,100-seat Steele Hall Ice Arena selling out several times each season. The Fredonia State Pep Band adds to the collegiate atmosphere. The band performs at most home games and at many road games. In addition, local and student media provide coverage of the team throughout the season.

the coaches
eff Meredith remains a fixture behind the Blue Devil bench as the 2007-2008 campaign will be his 20th at the helm. Meredith has coached 20 seasons at Fredonia State -all but the first year of the program -- and has built the Blue Devils into a perennial contender in the SUNYAC. Meredith was honored with SUNYAC Coach of the Year in 1990-91 and again in 1993-94. He earned national honors with his selection as 1994 Coach of the Year by the American Hockey Coaches Association. During his tenure, his teams made post-season appearances in 17 out of the last 18 years, won three SUNYAC titles, made two NCAA Final Four appearances and the NCAA tournament again in 2007. In 1994-95 -- the Blue Devil icers captured the SUNYAC tournament title for the second year in a row, thus earning a berth in the NCAA Division III playoffs. With victories over Salem State (8-2, 3-8, 3-0) and the University of Wisconsin - Superior (4-3), Fredonia State advanced to the national championship game. Facing host Middlebury College, the Fredonia State Blue Devils ultimately fell to Middlebury's Panthers, 1-0. It was the second consecutive trip to the NCAA Final Four for the Blue Devils. In 199394, Fredonia went 29-1-4 -- the best record of any team in any division in the nation -- and earned third-place national honors. The Blue Devils' only loss of the season came in the NCAA semifinals, 4-3, to eventual champion, the University of Wisconsin - River Falls.

Blue Devil hockey has a buzz all its own
By BEN KIRST
OBSERVER Sports Writer
Sports are what they are in Chautauqua County. This is not South Carolina or Texas, where 10,000 people will show up for a high school football game. This is not Harlem or Coney Island, where a pickup basketball game can stop a neighborhood. We have diehard athletes, fans and parents who give the local sports scene a special vibrancy, but with a few notable exceptions, most athletic contests in Chautauqua County begin and end in front of no more than a few hundred people in the bleachers. In a way, this state of affairs makes what happens on the State University of New York at Fredonia campus even more special. After a few sluggish years, the electricity surrounding the Fredonia State men’s ice hockey team has returned. “We’ve got great fans here,” said Head Coach Jeff Meredith. “We have college hockey fans who are very passionate about
the game. We have a great advantage every time we come out onto our home ice.” Raw numbers do not tell the entire story. The Blue Devils have their own pep band, an ensemble composed entirely of volunteer student-musicians. The crowds are a giddy mix of extroverted college students, families, hockey parents, and teenagers. With a capacity of 1,100 and seating confined to the east side of the rink, Steele Hall is the smallest in the State University of New York Athletic Conference, but it is also one of the loudest, most raucous venues in the state. “You know, somebody asked me if I would rather have stands on both sides of the arena,” Meredith said. “But honestly, I like it the way it is. I like to see it jampacked, shoulder-to-shoulder on the one side. It’s part of the electricity. I’d rather see it like that than have it spread out around the building. I like the idea that you have to get there early to find a seat. It adds
to the excitement.” Some great hockey has been played in the building ... and the fans reward the effort with noise — lots and lots of noise. “Sometimes (after a game), I think, ‘Wow, it was so loud after we scored,’” Meredith said. “The people are so into it. It’s a tremendous environment. We’ve always received good support form the community, and the community, to their credit, seems to have taken it up a notch.” The fans, in a way, are perpetuating the quality of the product they see on the ice. Recruits are often captivated by the grip that Blue Devil hockey has on the hearts and minds of its followers. “They love that atmosphere,” Meredith said. “They see the game, and they see that the fans are so into it. The crowd is animated. The pep band is blowing the roof off the place. We’ll have our exit meeting the next day and I’ve had guys commit (to the program) on the spot.”

Blue Devils claim 2007 SUNYAC title
PLATTSBURGH – Fredonia State defeated the Plattsburgh Cardinals 6-4, to capture the school’s third SUNYAC championship. The Blue Devils jumped out to a 2-0 on a short-handed goal from Bryan Goudy and one from Neal Sheehan. Plattsburgh cut the lead in half with only a minute remaining in the first period. The Blue Devils came out of the locker room strong, scoring two goals in the first 4:08 -- power plays by Wil Barlow and Matt McKeown. After a Plattsburgh goal cut the margin to 4-2, Joe Muli scored one minute and a half later. Mulli’s goal would prove to be the gamewinner, although Plattsburgh pulled within one goal early in the third period. The two teams played tough defense the rest of the way, but the Cardinals could not find the back of the net. Kraig Kuzma sealed the game for the Blue Devils with 37 seconds left in the game, as he scored on an empty net. Fredonia State goalkeeper Kevin Amborski was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP, with 38-save performance. Amborski totaled 122 saves in three SUNYAC Tournament games, and only seven goals. Fredonia State received the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament field of 10. All-Tournament Team Ryan Busby, Plattsburgh Pier-Luc Belanger, Plattsburgh Wil Barlow, Fredonia Neal Sheehan, Fredonia Bryan Goudy, Fredonia Kevin Amborski, Fredonia (MVP)
