Selection of Candidates
• “Natural Selection”
– aversion – not enjoyable
– slow progress

• We’ll take all the people we can get who are interested and want to do what is necessary to stay on our list
– exam
– travel
Training
• We rely on the AB associations to do the basic training • We conduct specialized training clinics wherever there is a need and a local host
Retention of Officials
Do WE lose members?
Why do officials quit?
• Changing circumstances • Conflict • Harassment
Attitude
• Why don’t I get the “good” games? • When will I get to work more important or “showcase” events? • How come the same people always do the Finals? • Why do I always have to do girls games or elementary games? • I’m better than he/she is.
Why do officials leave OUR active ranks?
• they can’t keep up
• they’ve done it long enough and want to give the opportunity to younger members
Old Soldiers
• observing and evaluating • mentoring - teaching local recruits • volunteering at fund raising events for the local WC team • Commissioners
What can we do to keep the younger ones?
• Indicate their worth
– to the organization – to the sport
• Find out if they’re happy
• Ask if they have ideas for improving the organization
• Make the avocation more enjoyable and less like work
• accentuate the positive in meetings • hold social events both with and without significant others • travel together • go to meals together
