Playing at the Top of Your Game! Bringing Solutions to Business Issues through the Lens of Basketball Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame 0 05.03.04 Picture This In an intense basketball game, as the action increases, it is a strategic move on a coach’s part to call a “time-out” – effectively stopping the action. The players come off the court, out of the heat of the battle to discuss the situation. While the coach may not use these exact words, the discussion is about… “What’s working? - How are we communicating with each other? How can we get better results? - What do we need to change? - Do we have the right team on the floor? - What do we need to be doing differently? - How can we better support each other? – Are our hearts and heads in the game? – Remember what were working towards, what this game means? – You are the ones to make it happen!” Once players refocus, re-energize, and re-commit themselves, they go back on the court, and inevitably… … play at the top of their game! 1 Having their employees play more at the top of their game is precisely one of the outcomes that most organizations are looking for in an off-site event. By employing engaging basketball metaphors to real life business issues, an event can be designed to deliver memorable and sustainable results for participants that will have impact for years to come. Basketball Metaphors-Business Issues In Basketball, Passing, Dribbling, Offense and Defense all have special meaning. They are the Means to reach an End… the Processes by which the Results are Achieved. Let’s Look at the Business World through the Lens of Basketball… 4 Passing  How well do your team members receive, accept, understand and pass along information?  How is your communication process working? Where are the bottlenecks and breakdowns?  How well do you really know who is on the court? How are you understanding and communicating in your customer’s or colleague’s personality style? Dribbling  What does your workday look like as you move the ball down court… recognizing your obstacles and moving toward your objectives? Are there plays that you could execute more efficiently?  In what ways are you fostering individual and shared accountability… supporting team members to define and accomplish their goals? How are team members being coached for performance improvement?  With time such a precious commodity, how well do you master your workflow?…. to beat the “shot-clock” and put “time on your side.” 5 Offense How well do you and your team anticipate the changes in the marketplace and execute your game plan? What’s your follow-through like? To what degree can you honestly say that you anticipate, meet, and more often, exceed your customer's expectations?  How are you creating a compelling shared vision to guide your team towards your desired future? Defense When change occurs, positive or challenging, to what degree do you and your team have a game plan for responding? Are you employing a climate of encouraged risk-taking, openness to new ideas and learning from mistakes? Where are the coachable moments? How well is it recognized that there are no “bleacher seats” in the game of success; that if your team is going to win, you have to operate at a high level of accountability and may have to “leave some skin on the floor”. 6 … Playing at the Top of Their Game… In the business world today, most everybody is busier now than ever before.
