Topics • • • • • • • Politics Economy History Geology Ecology Culture Environment. Trip BRAZIL HISTORY • The history of brazil begins with the arrival of the first native Americans over 8,000 years ago into the present territory of that nation. PEDRO ALVAREZ CABRAL • In 1500, the Portuguese explorer Pedro Alvares Cabral reached the Brazilian coast.All parts of those lands were inhabited by semi-nomadic tribes who subsisted on a combination of fishing, hunting, gathering, and agriculture. th 16 TO th 18 CENTURY • From the 16th to the 18th centuries, Brazil was a colony of Portugal exploited mainly for Brazilwood. This was a type of wood used to dye textiles with its red pigments. Later they cultivated sugarcane. SLAVERY • During this period, most Indians were exterminated, pushed out of the way or assimilated, and large numbers of African slaves were brought in to work in sugar cane plantations. GOLD AND DIAMONS • Gold and diamonds eventually replaced sugar as the country’s major exportation product. By the second half of the 19th century, Brazil entered a new cycle with coffee as the major exportation. INDEPENDANCE • On September 7, 1822, the country declared its independence from Portugal. Dom Pedro I became Brazil’s first emperor in a constitutional monarchy. BRAZIL ECOLOGY • Brazil is the largest and the most populous country in Latin America, spanning a vast area between Central South America and the Atlantic ocean. It borders with every South American country except Ecuador and Chile. • Brazil's geological formation is very old. Precambrian crystalline shields cover 36 percent of the territory, especially its central area. The principal mountain ranges average elevations just under 2,000 meters. The Serra do Mar Range hugs the Atlantic coast, and the Serra do Espinhaço Range, the largest in the area.It extends through the south-central part of the country THE SERRA DO MAR Brazil’s Cultural Life • These three groups have produced a rich culture manifest in all aspects of life: The culture of Brazil has been influenced by three main ethnic groups: Indian Natives, Descendants from European Immigrants and African slaves. • - Population - Cuisine - Religion - Arts Brazil’s Cultural Life • Population -Brazil is considered the fifth country in the world in population. -The language of Brazil is Portuguese. -The Lifestyle of Brazilians is similar to that in the U.S. Brazil’s Cultural Life • Cuisine -The result of the mix of ethnic groups is reflected in its food. - Brazilian descendants of African slaves have influenced the food in some regions. Brazil’s Cultural Life • Religion -The main religion of Brazil is Catholic -In Rio de Janeiro, there is a big statute of Jesus called, “The Redeemer” Brazil’s Cultural Life • Arts -Music: Brazil has a rich musical tradition -Samba is a musical style well known all over the world. It is played in the famous Carnival in Rio de Janeiro. Reserve biological natural If tropical adventure is what you seek,visit the north of Brazil and explore the Amazon Basin.The Amazon jungle is the largest biological reserve in the world and has unparalleled natural resources as well as one third of the earth’s living species. Brazil largest rainforest Brazil has the world’s largest rainforest. They are considered the lungs of the world.Brazil’s tropical savannah and jungles support an incredible diversity of life covering about a quarter of the landmass of the country. Brazil’s Animal Species Brazil has a rich tropical animal life. Animal life is matched by a vibrant array of cultures: indigenous,colonial and mixed. There are over 800 species of birds, monkeys, jaguars and pumas that roam the savannah. Brazil Industries Brazil is number one manufacturer of cars and airplanes, It also manufactures 840,000 barrels of oil and has developed a program of ethanol. Oil Ethanol • The new cars made in Brazil run entirely on ethanol. The country developed this program, because of the high cost of the imported oil. Textiles • Brazil employs 61% of the male work force, and 54%of the female Agriculture • Brazil competes with others countries exporting coffee, oranges and tobacco. • The country has 46,000 millions hectares for growing crops. Politics • The president of Brazil is: Liuz Ignacio Lula Da Silva Congress
