Through the years, the biography that you are reading here has been written in many different ways. They’ve told you about his no-nonsense, attention-toevery-detail approach to the game, his love of the nickname “Moose” and even how one season he was able to turn the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional into the first “All-Wooden Bat” tournament. But after 20 years of pacing the dugouts in Montclair, there are no more stories to tell. So instead, Norm Schoenig’s career will be told in the simplest of forms. As one famous television detective used to say, “Just the facts.” The fact is that Norm Schoenig has been the finest coach in the history of the Montclair State baseball program and that’s a pretty bold statement when you consider that legendary names such as Bill Dioguardi, Clary Anderson, Fred Hill and Kevin Cooney occupied the same seat Schoenig occupies now. Schoenig File... Birthdate: January 4, 1951 Alma Mater Montclair State, 1972 Education BA - History High School: Fair Lawn, NJ But the facts support that statement. In his 20 seasons, Norm Schoenig has won more contests than any coach in Montclair State Athletic history, let alone the baseball program. On the baseball diamond, Schoenig has won 583 games, reaching the 500-win plateau in 2004 as his Red Hawk squad defeated Eastern Connecticut, 4-3. His resume also includes two NCAA Division IIII National Championships, five New Jersey Athletic Conference titles, seven NCAA Regional championships, seven appearances in the Division III World Series, and a national runner-up finish in 1998. Fifteen times he has taken his teams to the NCAA Playoffs, including 2006 when his team made one of the more improbable runs to the World Series by winning six games over a four-day span to capture the regional championship. Schoenig was named the Mid-Atlantic Region Coach of the Year by the American Baseball Coaches Association and New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association Division II/III Co-Coach of the Year. As a player for Anderson‘s Montclair State teams during the early 1970s and later as an assistant under Hill, Schoenig knows plenty about the rich tradition of MSU Baseball. In fact, if you look around his office, you will see the plaques, trophies and pictures of Montclair’s past and present. When he returned to Montclair State in 1988 as the 10th head coach in the history of the program, Schoenig faced an uphill battle. Inheriting a team that had just won the NCAA title, it took Schoenig just three seasons to return to the World Series and by his sixth season, “Moose” delivered the Red Hawks their second baseball national championship when his band of players topped Wisconsin Oshkosh, 3-1, to win the 1993 crown. Five years later, he nearly pulled off another championship, but instead had to settle for second place. Montclair State Baseball Coaches COACH RECORD PCT. MSU won an unprecedented 42 of 50 games (42-7-1), setting the school record for victories while posting an amazing 17-1 mark in the highly competitive NJAC. His team would go on to capture the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional title and earn a berth to the Division III World Series. At the World Series, MSU would lose its first game; but taking his “one-game at a time” attitude, Schoenig’s squad rebounded with five straight wins, culminating with a 6-2 victory over St. Thomas (MN) to give the Red Hawks their third national championship. The following year, Montclair came very close to becoming the first team to repeat as national 4 champions since 1979 as they placed third at the World Series. Schoenig became the all-time winningest coach in MSU history in 1997 as he surpassed Dioguardi with his 291st victory in 6-3 win against Albright of Pennsylvania. Schoenig accomplished the feat in just 10 seasons, and in his 19 years he has amassed a 559-282-10 mark (an average of 30 wins per year). He has had seven 30-win seasons and currently ranks 33rd on the Division III coaching leaders in terms of percentage (.683) and his victory total places him 32nd. Those numbers are perhaps more impressive when you look at his NJAC record of 252-85-1, a .747 winning percentage. That includes back-to-back 17-1 records in 2000 and 2001 and a 62-10 ledger from 1998-2001. During his tenure, 18 of his players have been named All-Americans, with 16 Red Hawks signing professional contracts, including pitcher Jeff Gogal, who was taken in the 12th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft in 2004. But Schoenig’s career reaches far beyond the wins and the losses. He is a self-described baseball man and has lent his talent and experience to several ventures. Schoenig served on the NCAA Division III Baseball Committee for several years and is a member of the Board of Directors of the American Baseball Coaches Association. Schoenig resides in Pompton Plains, NJ with his wife Pat. The couple has two grown children - Janine, a graduate of Rutgers University, is a Manager of Employee Relations for the National Basketball Association and is married to P. Scott Brown of Chester. A career baseball man, DeFendis also served as an assistant coach at Xaverian High School in Brooklyn, NY helping the team to a pair of CHSAA City Championships. DeFendis currently resides in Staten Island, NY with his wife Fran and their two children, Nicole and Johnny, who was a standout at Rutgers University and was twice chosen in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, the second time by the Chicago Cubs in 2005 in the 29th round. 18-under Richmond County Baseball Club in the World Wood Bat Association Now in his 10th season with Montclair State, Joe Georgewitz further adds to the quality of assistant coaches on the MSU baseball staff. Coming to MSU with close to 20 years of baseball coaching experience, Georgewitz has had success both at the high school and collegiate levels. A head coach at Becton Regional High School for three years in the late 1980s, Georgewitz took his first collegiate coaching job as an assistant at Kean in 1993, and after a stop at Columbia High School, he spent three years at Rutgers-Newark helping the Raiders become conference contenders. Georgewitz resides in Bloomfield with his wife Mary and has three children – Joe, Randi and Keri. John Kroeger returns for his fourth season with Montclair State assisting with the Red Hawk backstops and hitters. Kroeger came to the Red Hawks in 2005 following five seasons at Division I Fairleigh Dickinson, his alma mater. Kroeger worked closely with the Knights’ pitching staff and also handled recruiting duties. Kroeger also spent time at Raritan Valley Community College where he was an assistant coach and served the 1991-92 campaign as the interim head coach. As a player for FDU, Kroeger was a standout catcher during the 1987 and 1988 seasons where he helped the Knights to a 42-28 record and two ECAC Tournament appearances. He would play professionally within the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees minor league systems and was a spring training invitee with the Cardinals in 1988-89. Kroeger competed in the Midwest League with the Cardinals affiliate and was also invited to the big league camp with the White Sox in 1990. Kroeger graduated from FDU in 1989 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and currently resides in Hackensack, NJ. 6 A member of the Montclair State Hall of Fame, John Scoras is back to assist with the Red Hawk infielders and hitters. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1986, Scoras was a standout catcher for the then Montclair State Indians from 1973-76. In 105 career games, Scoras batted. 328 with 22 home runs and 95 RBI as he helped Montclair to the NCAA College Division World Series in 1975 and the Division III World Series the following year. Scoras, a three-time All-NJAC selection, hit .348 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI as he was named a First-Team All-American. He would be drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eighth round of the 1976 Major League Baseball Draft, the first New Jerseyan taken. He also served as an assistant varsity baseball coach at Middletown North High School in 1990. A graduate of Montclair State in 1976 with a degree in Physical Education and Health, Scoras has served as an official in soccer, basketball and baseball for the past 30 years and has done the NJSIAA State Finals in all three sports. A four-year letterwinner for Montclair State, Jay Cook takes over the as the Red Hawks picthing coach after spending last season as the bullpen coach. During his career, Cook appeared in 48 games making 28 starts from 2003-2006. In 2006, Cook was co-captain for the NCAA Boyertown Regional champions as he posted a 5-4 record with a 3.47 ERA. In 72 innings, the righthander struck out 36 batters and earned a victory over Franklin and Marshall in the NCAA Boyertown Regional. A scholastic standout at Westfield High School, Cook was a two-time All-County selection and was chosen Second-Team All-State during his career. Cook is completed his degree in Psychology from Montclair State in May 2007. 7 The home of the Red Hawks for the eighth season, Yogi Berra Stadium is one of the premier college athletic facilities at any level in the country. The stadium, which was built as part of a public/private partnership with Floyd Hall Enterprises and New Jersey’s Educational Facilities Authority, is also home to the independent New Jersey Jackals of the Northeast League. After spending nearly four decades at Pittser Field, the Red Hawks played their first game at Yogi Berra Stadium on March 26, 1999, defeating Rensselaer, 5-1. Over the years, YOgi Berra Stadium has served as the host site for five New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournaments and three NCAA Baseball Regional Tournaments, including the 2000 NCAA Division I and Division III Regionals. The stadium is named for Lawrence “Yogi” Berra, the legendary New York Yankee catcher who is a long time resident of Montclair, NJ. The honor was bestowed upon Berra not only for his unparalleled baseball career, but also for his humanitarian work on behalf of disabled children. The 3,800 seat stadium features lawn seating that can raise the seating capacity to 7,000, and is also home to the Yogi Berra Museum. The Museum is a private, notfor-profit learning center which features baseball memorabilia and numerous educational workshops on the history of baseball. The 10 founding member institutions were Kean College (now University), Montclair State College (now University), Jersey City State College (now New Jersey City University), Glassboro State College (now Rowan University), Ramapo College, Rutgers University-Camden, Rutgers University-Newark, Stockton State College (now The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey), Trenton State College (now The College of New Jersey), and William Paterson College (now University). While meeting as a joint body to vote on broader policy and procedure matters, the conference continued to operate with separate legislative divisions governing men’s and women’s sports. Throughout its evolution, the conference has been guided by the following operating principles: ! To legislate through by-laws, policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines the administration of the intercollegiate athletic programs of conference members. ! To promote intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the total education program. ! To protect the welfare of the student-athlete. ! To foster and uphold the highest standards of athletic competition and academic integrity. ! To support the principles and practices of Title IX and gender equity. ! To encourage allied membership in appropriate state, regional and national organizations. ! To cooperate with other amateur athletic organizations in promoting intercollegiate athletics. Championships were originally offered in twelve sports: men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, women’s volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, wrestling and football. Today, the NJAC hosts seventeen championships: ten for women (cross country, basketball, field hockey, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, volleyball) and seven for men (cross country, baseball, basketball, football, soccer, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field). The conference ranks as one of the strongest in NCAA Division III, with member schools capturing 40 national championships over the past 16 years, and numerous final and semifinal round appearances. More than 550 NJAC student-athletes have received All-America honors. In 1999-2000, two NJAC members—The College of New Jersey and Rowan University—scored in the top ten of the prestigious Sears Cup rankings. In 1999, the New Jersey Athletic Conference added three new chapters to its history. In May, it hired its first commissioner. In September, the conference amended its constitution to allow affiliate members on a sport-by-sport basis and accepted the State University of New York at Cortland as its first affiliate member for the sport of football. And in October, it revised its constitution and bylaws to merge the men’s and women’s sports divisions into a single decision-making body; to create committees which more directly address the needs and interests of the student-athletes and faculty athletic representatives; and to strengthen the partnership between the office of the president and the department of athletics on each of our member campuses. Since 1929 when Guy Morrison coached the first ever contest against Upsala College, there have been 70 seasons of baseball in Montclair. The list of accomplishments and accolades are endless - three NCAA national championships (1987, 1993 & 2000), 12 Regional titles and 16 conference crowns, just to name a few. From managers such as Bill Diougardi, Clary Anderson, Fred Hill, Kevin Cooney and Norm Schoenig, who guided their teams to enormous heights, to players like Manny Senerchia, Jack Pruden and John Deutsch, whose home runs and strikeouts have helped Montclair State to over 1,300 victories. Brown Stadium - Battle Creek, MI Aurora L 6-7 Cal San Bernardino L 3-17 38 1987 Montclair State Baseball Team - Final Record (31-14-1) Montclair State’s first national championship, came in the most dramatic fashion as Leroy Horn belted a two-run homer in the bottom of the 13th inning to lift the then Indians to a 1312 victory over Wisconsin Oshkosh at Marietta College. Montclair won all four games as it used the long ball (six homers in the championship game) and some calculated risks by head coach Kevin Cooney that paid off. Led by seniors Jim Fasano and Jose Herrero, who set the NCAA Division III record for doubles with 26, MSU captured the Regional Tournamennt at Pittser Field with a 16-15, 16-inning win over local rival Upsala, the longest game in Montclair history. Sophomore John Deutsch, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the World Series, led the nation with 22 home runs and drove in a record 75 runs. Sophomore righthander Wayne Masters earned the victory in three of the four victories. 1993 Montclair State Baseball Team - Final Record (37-11) The 1993 Red Hawk baseball team capped off an amazing run to the title with a 3-1 win over, ironically, Wisconsin Oshkosh in Battle Creek, Michigan. The victory capped a run of nine straight wins to end the season. Like the first NCAA title team, Montclair belted their way to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship scoring 46 runs in their four triumphs, including a 19-6 rout of Rowan College in the championship game. At the World Series, the MSU pitchers dominated as the Red Hawks allowed just one earned run in five games and became the first team to sweep through the World Series unbeaten in the eight-team, double-elimination format. Junior Drew Yocum earned MVP honors after pitching two complete games, including the championship. Reliever Frank Dippold had three saves as the Red Hawks set a school record for victories in a season with 37. 2000 Montclair State Baseball Team - Final Record (42-7-1) The most successful season in the history of Montclair State baseball culminated in the Red Hawks third NCAA Championship. Although they finished with the national title, the road was a difficult and extremely long one. First, MSU, seeded second in the Mid-Atlantic Regional, overcame a 10-0 deficit to Allentown College in the opening game and then endured a three-day long rain delay before knocking off Rowan (12-6) and The College of New Jersey (5-3) to earn a trip to the World Series. In Grand Chute, WI, Montclair again found itself behind the eight-ball as they dropped their opening game to SUNYCortland, 5-1. Things grew worse as pitcher Scott Allan developed a blister on his finger and had to leave the elimination game against Emory. However, junior Corey Hamman allowed one hit over six innings of relief as MSU remained alive. Montclair then turned that effort into four more victories, including two against St. Thomas (MN) on the final day to capture the championship. Hamman was named the MVP as he went the distance in the championship game. All-American Craig Conway batted .375 with 10 RBI. 39 Montclair State’s rich tradition of baseball never becomes more apparent then when one looks at the list of the school’s All-American selections. Since 1966, when Jack Pruden was named MSU’s very first baseball All-American, there have been 35 athletes that have won 43 plaques of honor. These following list celebrates those great athletes and their achievements here at Montclair State University.
