Pioneer Coaching Staff
Head Coach Jamie Sailors
UW-Platteville Manager Jamie Sailors led the Pioneers to a season of firsts in 2005, including: *The program's first winning season in 12 years, as the Pioneers were 22-21; *The first trip to the WIAC post-season tournament, clinching the bid with a doubleheader sweep at UW-Oshkosh on the season's final day, the Pioneers' first sweep of the Titans since 1965; *The first post-season victory, a 7-6 win over UW-Oshkosh when the Pioneers scored five runs in the bottom of the ninth. The 2005 season also featured a slew of comebacks, with eight come-from-behind wins. Included in that list is a fourrun ninth inning that led to a 5-4 victory over 19-0 UWWhitewater, a seven-run eighth inning that led to a 10-9 win in the regularseason finale at Oshkosh and then the playoff comeback against the Ttans eight days later. With plenty of players back from the breakout season, fifth-year coach Sailors and the Pioneers have sights set high for 2006 and beyond. UW-Platteville made an unprecedented commitment to Coach Sailors and the baseball program in 2004, naming Sailors the first full-time baseball coach in school history. Previously, the position involved a football coordinator job as well, but Sailors now can concentrate on fall instruction and recruiting full-time. In 2002, he led UW-Platteville to its most victories in 10 years, as the Pioneers compiled a 17-21 mark in 2002. The Pioneers broke five team season records, while individuals broke or tied six more previous marks. UWP added several records to the books in 2003, as the team compiled a 13-27 overall mark and had four players earn all-WIAC honors. In 2004, the Pioneers remained in the WIAC playoff hunt until the final day of the season before being eliminated. Four Pioneers were rewarded with all-conference honors by the league coaches. This former Pioneer assistant took over the head job in 2002 after a year at Harrison High School in West Lafayette, Indiana. Sailors graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Physical Education. Sailors earned his master's degree from UW-Platteville in education in 2003. In 1992, the St. Louis Cardinals drafted Sailors in the 13th round, after spending one season at Parkland Junior College in Champaign, Ill. A NY-Penn League Championship with the New Jersey Cardinals highlighted his four years in the minors. The Cardinals drafted Sailors as a left-handed pitcher, but also played first base while at Parkland College. In 1993, while in the Appalachian League, Sailors finished second in the league in strikeouts. During his playing days with the Cardinals, Sailors competed against the likes of Alex Rodriguez, Manny Ramirez, Derek Jeter,

Jim Thome, and many more. Sailors has coaching experience at all levels. He was the head coach at Frontier High School in Indiana, for two years, compiling a 42-13 record. Sailors also served as a Lead Instructor/Prospect Camp Director at Tippecanoe Baseball Academy in Lafayette, Ind. He went on to coach at Parkland Junior College. After a year stint as an assistant with the Pioneers, he took over the head coaching job at Harrison (21-7). During his coaching time, Sailors saw three of his players drafted and many more go on to play college baseball. Sailors is well respected among his peers. He serves on the NCAA III championship selection committee.

Assistant Coach Mike Harmon
First-year Pioneer Assistant Coach Mike Harmon hopes to be a part of another record breaking season, and add to a growing Pioneer baseball program. Harmon served three years in the U.S. Army, 2002-05. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion of the 8th Calvary, 1st Calvary Division, Fort Hood, TX. He spent most of 2003 deployed to Baghdad, Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom 2, where he achieved the rank of Sargeant and was a tank gunner. He is transferring his conditioning techniques he learned in the army to the baseball team. Harmon is from Brookston, Ind., and is a 1995 graduate of Frontier High School where he played under Coach Sailors. He is a 2000 graduate of Purdue University with a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, and a minor in U.S. History. He was an assistant baseball coach for four years at Frontier High School, and was Coach Sailors' assistant baseball coach at Harrison High School for one year.

Pioneers set for 2006 Odyssey
By Paul Erickson, Sports Information Director All the familiar sights and sounds were present. The smacking of the ball into the leather gloves. The ping of the aluminum bat meeting the ball and sending it into the blue sky. The playful banter between teammates as they ready themselves for another baseball season. Then one remembers it is mid-January. In Wisconsin. And the UW-Platteville baseball players were practicing outside. The abnormal outdoor winter captains' practices were the perfect beginning to what promises to be the most unique season in Pioneer history. Before even formally gathering as a team, the Pioneers already have two conference records set, barring rainouts. Their Feb. 17 opener at the University of Ozarks is the earliest first-pitch in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference history, and their 40 road games– necessitated by construction of their new field–constitute another league mark. The Pioneers are coming off the best season in school history, finishing 22-21 and qualifying for the WIAC playoffs for the first time. Thanks to five runs in the bottom of the ninth, the Pioneers beat UW-Oshkosh 7-6 for their first-ever post-season victory. Trying to carry over that excitement into 2006 will be different because of the facility situation. Antiquated Kendall Murray Field is being replaced by a brand-new stadium on the upper portion of campus, but the new outdoor track was built into left field of Kendall Murray, making it unplayable for games. While the new field is being constructed, the Pioneers will take to the road. "We talked about it very early in the fall and addressed it," said fifth-year Pioneer Coach Jamie Sailors. "This is the hand we have, and we have to make the most of it. Hopefully this can become our rallying cry, so to speak, or something that will pull us a little closer spending time on the busses. We're going to use it to our advantage, if we can." Sailors lined up some outstanding fields for the 2006 "home" games. UW-Platteville has five games at the University of Dubuque and eight in Madison. They have adopted the slogan "Come Along for the Ride" for the year. "We're playing in Warner Park, which is a very nice facility, MATC, which has had a great facility for a long time, and then the University of Dubuque, which has made some really nice improvements there," Sailors said. "Those three fields will definitely be fun to play on. We'll drive a ways to get there, but we've usually played a lot of road games to begin with. It shouldn't be that different. We just have to make sure everyone gets their studies done since we will be traveling more." The early start was done by design. Instead of one long trip over spring break in March, the Pioneers will play three weekend

The Pioneers took advantage of the unseasonable January weather to work outside at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium. series in Arkansas and Missouri, beginning Feb. 17 at the University of Ozarks. No conference school has ever scheduled an earlier opener. "It's very difficult to keep guys motivated indoors for a month or five weeks, whatever we have to do," Sailors said. "I just had the idea of trying to start it earlier. Therefore, we will use our better pitchers more often and hopefully we can pick up some early-season wins and gain some momentum going into the conference season. This gets us out of the cabin fever after a couple of weeks and makes those practices sharper. They know we don't have a lot of time to be ready for that first game. They always seem to have a lot of energy to begin practicing, but it always seems to die down in February. I hope it stays high with that carrot they're chasing a little bit closer than in the past." The Pioneers captured the WIAC playoff carrot in 2005. They overcame a 1-10 conference start to make the playoffs. Their road back began with a 5-4 10th-inning win against top-ranked UWWhitewater, ending the Warhawks' 19-game winning streak. The rally over previous unbeaten UWW sparked the Pioneers, who won 14 of their final 19 regular-season games, often in dramatic fashion. UWP closed out the final games ever at Kendall Murray Field on May 1 by beating UW-Stout 10-3 and 19-5, keeping their playoff hopes alive. On the season's final day, the Pioneers swept UW-Oshkosh for the first time since 1965, clinching the coveted playoff spot. UWP beat the Titans 8-4 and 10-9, overcoming a 9-3 eighth-inning lead in the nightcap and setting the stage for a repeat performance in the WIAC playoffs. "As the summer grew on and even into the fall when the guys came back, we start to look back and look at the statistics, some of the games and the play-by-plays, and we remember the big hits or the comebacks," Sailors said. "Some of the performances, like Ryan Slaght's 10 (pitching) innings against Whitewater, come back, and it's great to enjoy the moment. You don't realize how special it is until you have time to reflect. It really was a special year for us." The Pioneers returned to campus this fall with an extra burst of energy, buoyed by the confidence of last spring's success. "Without question," Sailors said. "They were more motivated and had more hops in their steps. They had more of confidence when they practiced than we have really ever have had in the past." Among the 18 returning lettermen are Slaght, who earned allWIAC honors, all-conference shortstop Matt Huckstep, two-time all-

Pioneers make history in 2005
Comeback (come-back), noun: 1. a recovery of position; 2. a retort. See also, the 2005 UW-Platteville baseball season. The Pioneers defied the odds, logic and history to record one of the most memorable seasons in UWP annals. The Pioneers overcame a 1-10 conference start to qualify for the four-team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoffs for the first time ever. How they accomplished that feat was even more remarkable than the feat itself. Sitting with that 1-10 record, the Pioneers were staring at 1-11 when undefeated and top-ranked UW-Whitewater took a 4-0 lead into the ninth inning of the April 14 meeting. UWP, however, rallied with four runs to tie the score, then won it in the 10th when Brett Mandsager singled home Scott Dybevik with the winning run. The rally over the previous unbeaten Warhawks sparked the Pioneers, who won 14 of their final 19 regular-season games, often in dramatic fashion. UWP closed out the final games ever at Kendall Murray Field on May 1 by beating UW-Stout 10-3 and 19-5, keeping their playoff hopes alive. On the season's final day, the Pioneers swept UW-Oshkosh for the first time since 1965 (yes 1965!), clinching the coveted playoff spot. UWP beat the Titans 8-4 and 109, overcoming a 9-3 eighth-inning lead in the nightcap. E.J. Zbikowski singled home the final runs in the eighth for the lead, and catcherturned-relief-pitcher

David Reifenberger pitched the ninth inning for the save. It was Deja Vu in the WIAC playoffs, contested at Wisconsin Rapids. The Pioneers trailed UW-Oshkosh 6-2 in the ninth inning, but Coach Jamie Sailors' crew summoned one more rally. Mandsager hit a two-run home run, and just like the previous weekend, Zbikowski singled home two runs with two outs for the comeback victory. The playoff win capped a 22-21 season for the Pioneers, a season they and their fans will remember for a long, long time. Pitcher Ryan Slaght, who threw all 10 innings in the 5-4 win over eventual national champion UW-Whitewater, earned first team all-conference honors, while Reifenberger, Zbikowski and shortstop Matt Huckstep were honorable mention selections. Jason Watson demolished the Pioneer record and tied the WIAC mark with 38 stolen bases.

2006 Preview
WIAC player Nick Pepper, and infielder Jason Watson, who set a conference record with 38 stolen bases. Seniors Pepper, Slaght, Watson, second baseman Brandon Ihm and pitcher Bryan Aspenson ran captains' practices this January. The players arrived on campus a week before school started to work out on their own. Taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and the new ProGrass field in Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium, the Pioneers were able to get outside. In 2007, the Pioneers will take to their new baseball stadium. The facility will feature a fully-enclosed field with major-league style dugouts that are lower than the field and restroom and concession facilities on-site. "It's going to make a tremendous impact on recruiting," Sailors said. "When the field is finally finished, it will be one of the better ones in the league as far as playing surfaces. It will have a unique look in that it will drop down from the level the fans are on. It will really help recruiting and really help team morale because we will now have

(continued from previous page)

a place to call our own and some place to take pride in. We just had the infield to take care of before, and now we'll have the whole thing. It's going to be an excellent facility."
