STOCK AND INDICES RELEASE NOTES FOR THE February 2005 MONTHLY UPDATE
These release notes pertain to February 2005 monthly release of the CRSP US Stock and Indices databases. A separate set of release notes for CRSPAccess 2.90 accompany these data release notes. Because this release represents significant changes for both data and software installation, CRSP strongly recommends that subscribers take the time to read carefully through these release notes and those for CRSPAccess 2.90 before installing data and utilities. This shipment of data marks the introduction of a new installation process. The new installation represents change in several ways: Data are compressed, reducing the number of CDs. Only three products require two CDs, the rest require only one. DVDs are available and each product fits on one DVD. Because the data are compressed by InstallShield®, data files are not accessible without first installing through the wizard. This applies to all CRSP data and software products. The preferred medium for delivery of data that requires more than one CD is DVD, though CDs are available upon request. Product groups are now bundled into one installation rather than multiple installations, thus saving valuable time. The InstallShield® works for all three platforms: Windows, Linux and Sun Solaris. Through surveys distributed with the annual renewal letters and follow-up phone calls by marketing personnel, CRSP made every effort to contact users of CRSP data to confirm platforms and media needs. February 2005 Monthly UPDATE SUPPLEMENT Data Installation
Instructions and screen shots for installation are written for Windows. Differences related to Linux and Sun, or media, CD and DVD, are noted. Windows: To install data, insert your CD or DVD into the drive and from the Start Menu, select Run d:\setupwin32.exe. Click OK. Sun Solaris (DVD or Single CD install): After inserting the DVD or CD, a file manager will open with the file, setupsolaris.bin. Double click on this setup file to begin the installation process. (If installing a 2-CD set, see Sun and Linux 2-CD install.) Linux(DVD or Single CD install): Upon insertion of the DVD or CD, a file manager will open with the file, setuplinux.bin. Double click on this setup file to begin the installation process. (If installing a 2-CD set, see Sun and Linux 2-CD install.) Sun and Linux 2-CD install: Run the install from a terminal rather than from the File manager. At the prompt, type df for the correct listing of the database name. Using that name, from the terminal type: /cdrom/medianame/setupsolaris.bin For example, if installing Daily and Monthly Stock and Indices, or AFZ, the command might be: /cdrom/afz_200412_sbc/setupsolaris.bin

After clicking on Next on the Welcome screen, scroll through and read the CRSP Data and Utilities Agreement. Click to accept the terms of the license agreement. Click Next.
Windows: The default directory for the data installation is c:\crspdata. You may accept or modify it. Click Next. Note: InstallShield does not verify available space. Please see the CRSPAccess Product Information chart on page 2 for space required for installation. Sun Solaris & Linux: The default directory for the data installation is /crspdata. You must have write permisson to the directory you specify, for example, /home/username/crspdata. Note: InstallShield does not verify available space. Summary information is displayed: Location, data components and the amount of space that is required for the data. Click on Install to proceed.
The screen will display the status of the installation. Sun Solaris & Linux 2-CD installations: A pop-up window will prompt for disk 2. From a free terminal, at the prompt, type eject to remove CD-1. Edit the pop-up window to replace the reference to disk 1 with disk 2. For example, for Daily and Monthly Stock and Indices, the afz1 reference in the window must be edited to afz2. Once this edit is made, insert disk 2 and wait until you hear it engage. The file manager will open. Disregard, or close it. Click OK in the disk prompt window for the installation to proceed and finish.

A message indicating the success of the installation appears when the process is complete. Click Finish.
Sun Solaris & Linux:
After clicking Finish, a file named crsp.kshrc must be run to se the local environment variables. At the prompt, type:

Note: If you are not using ksh, modifications will be necessary. Check with your Unix administrator.

Windows:
Location of the software and data may be checked by opening CRSP Client Environment from the CRSPAccess menu. This new utility provides users a quick and simple way of both checking and switching environment variables if necessary. Where, in the past, users had to go through the Control Panel to manipulate the environment variables, this can now be done by quick editing of the Client Environment screen. Note: For subscribers of the CRSP Compustat Merged database, an additional CCM database environment will be displayed for the location of the Compustat data.

Uninstall
For each data install, an uninstall is created on the CRSPAccess menu. Data uninstalls do not touch software environment variables. Likewise, software uninstalls do not touch data environment variables. Each uninstall is done separately. As with the install, the uninstall is wizard-driven. When uninstall is complete, users may be prompted with an option to either reboot the computer or wait until later. It is not necessary to reboot the computer after uninstalling. This reboot message may be disregarded.
Uninstall & CRSP Client Environment
Each time a path is modified in client environment, the action is recorded. Upon running uninstall, a Restore Environment Variable prompt will appear:
This prompt appears for each variable for each modification. Answer each prompt and continue cycling through. Yes is the default, which will restore environment variables back to what they were prior to the install.
