					Geometry Assignment: Conditional Statements in Advertising

  1. List the critical attributes of the advertisement. Critical attributes are
     descriptions that make the advertisement unique.
  2. Write a conditional statement using the name of the product in the
     hypothesis and one critical attribute in the conclusion.
  3. State whether the conditional statement is true or false. If it is false,
     then state a counter example.
  4. Using your original conditional statement from #3, write the converse
     of this conditional. State whether the converse is true or false. If it is
     false, then state a counter example.
  5. Using your original conditional statement from #3, write the inverse
     of this conditional. State whether the converse is true or false. If it is
     false, then state a counter example.
  6. Using your original conditional statement from #3, write the
     contrapositive of this conditional. State whether the converse is true
     or false. If it is false, then state a counter example.
  7. Write a logical chain of conditionals using the critical attributes.
     Write a logical conclusion.
  8. Make a poster of your advertisement and typed statements. Use a 12
     by 18 piece of construction paper, white paper, scissors, and glue stick
     which are provided in class.
  9. This assignment will count as a quiz grade. You will be graded on
     correct form of a conditional, converse, inverse, contrapositive
     counterexample, and logical chain. Each of the previous is 15% each.
     Neatness and creativity is 10%.

Conditional sentence:
If a person is the movie star Ashley Judd, then she uses American Beauty.

True or false? This statement is true.

Inverse: If a person is not the movie star Ashley Judd, then she does not use
American Beauty.

This statement is false because other people besides Ashley Judd use
American Beauty or they wouldn’t need her for advertising.

Converse: If a person uses American Beauty, then she is the movie star
Ashley Judd.

This statement is false, because the salesperson at Kohl’s uses American
Beauty. She is not Ashley Judd.
Contrapositive: If a person does not use American Beauty, then she is not
Ashley Judd.

This statement is true, because Ashley Judd is not in the category with
people who do not use American Beauty.

Logical Chain:
If a person is the movie star Ashley Judd, then she uses American Beauty.

If a person uses American Beauty, then she shops at Kohl’s.

If a person shops at Kohl’s, then she expects great things.

If a person expects great things, then she is attractive.

If a person is attractive, then she is happy.

If a person is happy, then she is smiling.

If a person is smiling, then she is outside.

If a person is outside, then the weather is beautiful.

Logical conclusion: If a person is uses American Beauty, the weather is
