These three events showcase some of the leading young international players, many of whom have gone on to achieve success on the world stage in the past. These tournaments give fans the chance to watch some of the world’s top young tennis players, while providing vital match experience for our young Australian players, without the expense of travelling overseas. As ITF Grade 1 tournaments, the Loy Yang Power Traralgon International and the Optus Nottinghill International draw top-class fields and provide the perfect lead-in to the Australian Open Junior Championships which, along with the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open Junior Championships, is one of the four most prestigious junior events in the world. In 2007, a number of our junior players achieved success. Brydan Klein broke through to win the Australian Open Junior Championships, becoming the first Australian to win since Ben Ellwood in 1994, while both Greg Jones and JP Smith reached the quarterfinals. Greg Jones also reached the junior final at the French Open, and JP won two ITF Grade 1 events during the year. Jessica Moore also had a great year in the AIS Pro Tour program, working with David Taylor. Jess played mostly on the senior tour, winning two ITF Women’s events, in Traralgon and Great Britain, and reaching the final in Switzerland. We extend a warm thank-you to our host clubs, Traralgon and Nottinghill, whose dedicated volunteers and excellent facilities make these tournaments the successes that they are. Thanks also to our wonderful sponsors, Optus and Loy Yang Power, without whom the tournaments could not operate. To the players, I wish you the best of luck in the coming weeks. We hope that you enjoy success on the court and a pleasant stay in Melbourne and Victoria. To tennis fans, make the most of this opportunity to get a close-up look at these immensely talented young players. In a few years’ time, some of them could be playing on Rod Laver Arena in an Australian Open final. Taken out by German Lars Rehmann and Czechoslovakia’s Ludmila Richterova in its inaugural staging, the tournament gathered prestige by the year as players such as Nicolas Escude (1994 boys’ singles champion), Lleyton Hewitt (1997 boys’ doubles champion), Roger Federer (1998 boys’ singles champion) and Jelena Dokic (1998 girls’ singles champion) joined the honour roll. With ongoing support from Loy Yang Power and the LaTrobe Shire, the tournament continues to strengthen, attracting the best young players the world has to offer. The 2006 event started an amazing winning streak for girls’ singles winner, Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. She went on to win both singles and doubles at the the Australian Open Juniors, singles at the US Open Juniors and doubles at the Wimbledon Junior Championships. Pavlyuchenkova suffered a shock loss in the semis in Traralgon last year, but won the doubles. She went on to successfully defend her Australian Open singles crown, reached the semis at Roland Garros and won doubles at Wimbledon. Pavlyuchenkova loves the Traralgon event and is expected to return to fight for another title in 2008. -8- Optus Nottinghill International Dates: Singles finals: Draw size: Venue: Qualifying – Friday 11 January 2008 Main Draw – Saturday 12 January – Friday 18 January 2008 Friday 18 January 2008 Singles 64 Doubles 32 Nottinghill Pinewood Tennis Club 1-5 Baker Avenue Glen Waverly, Victoria 3150 (Off England Road, Glen Waverly) ITF Grade 1 Francis Soyer (Tennis Australia) Prue Ryan (Tennis Australia) Tel: (03) 9914 4175 or Mob: 0419 308 369 Hardcourt Upgraded from Grade 2 to Grade 1 status after a successful first year in 1993 when Australians Andrew Illie and Mark Philippoussis won the boys’ doubles, the Optus Nottinghill International has been the main lead into the Australian Open Juniors ever since.
