2008 SWATCH-FIVB U-19 World Championships
After hosting local, national and European Beach Volleyball stops the past several years, Netherlands will stage its firstever international event July 30-August 3 as The Hague will be the site for the SWATCH FIVB World Championships for players under the age of 19. The Hague, the third-largest city in the Netherlands after Amsterdam and Rotterdam with a population of nearly 500,000, is the largest Dutch city on the North Sea and comprises two distinct beach towns. The main beach resort Scheveningen, in the northwestern part of the city, is a popular destination for tourists and young people with 10 million visitors a year. The Hague offers a unique blend of versatility, service and quality. The hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs make Scheveningen one of the best known trendy resorts on the North Sea. Kijkduin, on the other hand, is smaller and more situated to those who live at a slower pace. “h s e e t h v b e ci a t ce t an w g n rt no B a hV lya ah ts said Angelo Squeo, the FIVB T e e v ns a e e n ri lo rae e e eai f e c oe b l tl e , t c o l l e ” B a hV ly a E e t Drc r “ a few years, these players will challenge for SWATCH-FIVB World Tour medals and e c oe b l v ns i t . QUALIFICATION FOR THE GAMES XXIX OLYMPIAD, BEIJING 2008 Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground Saturday, August 9 through Friday, August 22 Women's Medal Matches - August 21 Men's Medal Matches - August 22
The Beach Volleyball qualification period runs from January 1, 2007 to July 20, 2008 with 24 team vacancies available for each gender. By July 21, 2008, the FIVB will establish an Olympic Ranking based on the best eight performances of teams in recognized Olympic Qualification tournaments (SWATCH FIVB World Tour events, SWATCH FIVB World Championships, FIVB recognized Continental Championship Finals). China will automatically qualify at least one team as the host country with the top 23 teams from each gender qualifying for Beijing 2008, subject to a maximum of two teams per country. In order to respect the universality principle of the Olympic Games, if a continent does not have any teams qualified after the above procedure is applied, the 23rd place will be occupied by the highest-ranked eligible team from the continent in question. The FIVB confirmed the European Championship Finals in 2007 at Valencia, Spain (August 23-26) and 2008 in Hamburg, Germany (July 10-13) as part of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Qualification Process. Only the best finish from the two European Championships may be considered as one of the ta sbest eight performances. The 12,200-seat Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground will be the site for the 2008 e m’ competition. The volleyball ground contains 17,000 tons of fine sand imported from Hainan. Construction for the facility was started December 28, 2005 a dw s o l e fr n“ l i ts e e to w me August 2007. Practicing the n a c mp td o a Oy c e t v n fr o nin e mp ” concept of "Green Olympics," the beach volleyball event organizers had the previously existing workshops and industrial storerooms on the grounds converted into office space rather than having new offices built. A "sun-chasing" solar power generation system installed at the Chaoyang Park Beach Volleyball Ground will be the first such power generation system used at an Olympic venue. The sun-chasing mechanism controls a rotating battery that switches according to where the sun shines, thereby maximizing the amount of solar power collected. The completely automatic 11-kW sun-chasing solar power generation system measures 11 m high x 7 m wide, and the battery is capable of rotating 270 degrees. The system can generate 30% more power than the average solar power generation system. With a lifespan of more than 25 years, the system can generate 72,000 kWh per year, with an average of 200 kWh per day. Moreover, it is environmentalfriendly. As a solar energy power generation system, it produces 23.4 tons less carbon dioxide and 1.5 tons less sulfur dioxide emissions than regular generators.

May 13-18, Seoul Open, Korea, Women, $175,000 - The 2007 SWATCH-FVB World Tour event in Seoul was the country's first international Beach Volleyball event in nine seasons after Pusan hosted women's events for three years (1995-1997). Natalie Cook, Australia's three-time Olympian and Sydney 2000 gold medal winner, captured the inaugural Seoul stop last season with Tamsin Barnett as the pair upset top-seeded Jia Tian and Jie Wang of China 21-19 and 21-19 in the 44-minute finale. Teams from American won all three gold medals in Pusan as three-time Olympian Holly McPeak was a member of each winning team. The inaugural Pusan event in 1995 was a double gender stop as Brazilians Roberto Lopes and Franco Neto captured the men's title after McPeak and her Atlanta 1996 Olympic partner Nancy Reno claimed the women's gold medal. McPeak and Lisa Arce won the next two Pusan gold medals as the 1996 finale marked the first of two SWATCH-FIVB World Tour title matches for teams from Japan. Yukiko Takahashi and Yuki Ishizaka captured the 1996 Pusan silver medal. Japan's other SWATCH finale was in 2000 when Takahashi and her Sydney 2000 Olympic partner Mika Teru Saiki placed second to Adriana Behar and Shelda Bede of Brazil in Osaka, Japan. Kyung-Hee Ji and Sung-Min Kim were ninth at the 1996 Pusan stop for the top women's placement for South Korea on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour.

June 9-15, Smart Grand Slam, Berlin, Germany, Men & Women, $600,000 - The first of six SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events in 2008 will be hosted in the Germany capital. Four of the Grand Slam events feature additional points for qualifying for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games along with US$600,000 in prize money. After Berlin, other Grand Slam qualifying events will be staged in Paris, Stavanger and Moscow. Except for 2006 when the country hosted the World Cup of Soccer, Germany has been a regular on the SWATCH-FIVB World Tour calendar with the grand slam stop being the fifth double gender event in Berlin. The 2007 event featured the successful Berlin title defenses for Brazilians Marcio Araujo/Fabio Magalhaes and Misty May-Treanor/Kerri Walsh of the United States as both claimed their first German gold medals in 2005 at the SWATCH-FIVB World Championships.
