Meetings and Social Media
• The Future of Meetings
From IncentiveMag.com: “Top Industry Leaders on the Future of Meetings," was the session at
the January 12, 2010 PCMA Masters Series…. [Attendees were] warned of the possibility of
over-leveraged hotels going under as loans come due in 2010. "Some of the best hotel operators
are vulnerable to this" … "Lack of financing has stopped the construction of new hotel inventory
which means there will be less hotels to clog the supply of hotel rooms."
When asked if whether incentives will be a vital part of travel again, Brenda Anderson said that
the industry and corporate end u sers are in the process of redefining incentives. "Incentive
practitioners are changing the value proposition of what incentives offer," Anderson said.
"There is a renewed emphasis on proving ROI and economy and value are now elements of
program designs that once emphasized luxury."
Roger Dow of the U.S. Travel Association stressed the importance of building on the industry-
wide effort to present a unified lobbying and public relations initiative that successfully
changed the perception of meetings and events in 2009. "We've got to get some segments of the
industry who are not participating in the effort on board," he said. "The airline industry is the
most important player not at the table with the industry initiatives." Full story:

• Travelers and Social Media
From SuccessfulMeetings.com: “A majority of travelers use social media, although very few
use it to gather travel-related information, finds the latest travelhorizons survey from
Ypartnership and the U.S. Travel Association. Conducted in October 2009 and released this
week, the survey of 2,200 U.S. adults found that nearly 6 out of 10 (59%) active travelers have
visited a social networking site such as Facebook (approximately 50%) or MySpace
(approximately 25%).” Full story:

Construction Work at Broadway and Rollins Road
Caltrans is currently doing construction work at the corner of Broadway and Rollins Road. The work is
to complete the landing for the new pedestrian/bicycle bridge at Broadway. A new and safer corner
will be constructed for the bridge landing so that pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to access the
bridge directly from Broadway. Several of the traffic signals around that corner will be relocated and
replaced with new signals and poles. A newly re-aligned right-turn lane will also be constructed.
According to Caltrans, the work will be completed on or before March 15.
The existing right turn lane of Rollins Road over the Broadway overpass (for northbound US 101 and for
Bayshore Highway) is closed during the construction. Caltrans has provided detour signs and
recommends that motorists needing to use the Broadway overpass take the Cadillac Way detour onto
Carolan Avenue.

The Resplendent Stone: Chinese Jades from the 18th–20th Centuries ~ through June 7, 2010
From the collections of the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco Chong -Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and
Culture, this exhibition explores a resplendent body of jades from the Qing dynasty (1644–1911) to the
first half of the 1900s. The more than eighty objects on view reflect the status of jade as the most
precious of all stones to the Chinese. Artisans crafted a remarkable variety of items in jade: from
personal and scholars’ studio ornaments to ritual and religious objects, practical utensils, and
imitations of ancient bronze vessels. Among the many items featured in the exhibition are jade
“mountains,” landscape screens, archaic vessels, religious sculptures, incense burners, animal figures,
hair ornaments, and paperweights. In contrast to the Chinese jades, several Russian, Turkish, and
Mughal jades dating from the 17th–19th centuries are also on view. Located pre-security in the
International Terminal Main Hall; free admission.
