  Population
       The population of Minidoka County has been slipping over
  the last decade from 20,350 in 1999 to 19,226 in mid-2009, a                                               Population
  5.5 percent decrease. But the decline seems to have stopped
  in the last two years with year-over-year increases. The change
  from 2008-2009 was 2.1 percent, one of the faster growing                     20,500

       Still heavily dependent on agriculture and food processing,              17,500

  facturing and wholesale and retail trade tied to agriculture.

  Renewed economic vitality, the area’s scenic beauty and the
  lure of nearby recreation are drawing new residents.



 Labor Force & Employment
                                                                                          Unemployment Rates
      Minidoka County traditionally has the highest
 unemployment rate of all south central Idaho counties. The           10.0
 rate peaked at 8.1 percent in 1998 and fell to a record low           9.0
 3.6 percent in 2007. In the past, many workers relied on              8.0
 fresh pack potato operations, farm jobs, sugar processing             7.0

 and potato processing for employment. In 2003, the J.R.               6.0

 Simplot Co. closed its Heyburn plant, idling 600 workers and          4.0
 causing a spike in the unemployment rate to 7.5 percent in            3.0
 2004. After closure, the company donated the plant along the          2.0

 manufacturing. A farmer’s market is active in the summer

 industrial park that has developed a list of tenants that belies
 its agricultural base. Minidoka County is commonly              combined with Cassia County and referred to as the Mini
