Several major industries scored better-than-usual job gains over the month

The unemployment rate in the San Francisco-San Mateo-Redwood City MD was 9.3 percent in
September 2010, unchanged from a revised 9.3 percent in August 2010, and above the year-
ago estimate of 9.2 percent. This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of
12.2 percent for California and 9.2 percent for the nation during the same period. The
unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in Marin County, 9.7 percent in San Francisco County, and
9.1 percent in San Mateo County.

Between August 2010 and September 2010, the total number of jobs located in the West Bay
counties of Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo rose by 3,800 to total 916,900 jobs.

   • Both government and private educational and health services (which includes social
assistance), increased more than usual between August and September. They gained
3,000 and 2,200 jobs, respectively, at the start of the new school year.

   • Professional and business services netted 400 jobs over the month, significantly better
than its 500-job average decrease between August and September over the prior 20
years. Most of the above-average performance occurred in professional, scientific, and
technical services. Temporary and other employment services, often viewed as a
leading indicator, matched the long-term average increase, continuing the trend
observed for most of the last six months.

   • Retail trade and financial activities netted 200 and 100 jobs from August, better than the
prior 20-year average decreases of 100 and 400 jobs respectively.

   • On the other hand, leisure and hospitality (down 1,300 jobs) and construction (down 500
jobs) performed worse than usual at this time of year.

Between September 2009 and September 2010, the total number of jobs in the West Bay slid
by 13,400 jobs or 1.4 percent. This marked the area’s smallest total job decrease on a year-over
basis since November 2008.

   • Professional and business services netted a loss of 2,400 jobs. A cutback largely in
administrative and support services more than offset gains in temporary and other
employment services and in professional, scientific, and technical services. For seven
consecutive months, employment services posted gains compared to the prior year.

   • Construction shed 2,300 jobs, while financial activities lost 1,900 jobs. Both of those
cutbacks were the smallest on a year-over basis in about two years.

   • Information netted a reduction of 1,500 jobs, mostly in publishing.
