Board of Education Minutes for October 4, 2005 The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm and began with a prayer read by all. Members Present: Joanne Kerton, Ann Espeset, Donna Evans, Jenna Maubach, Mark Jackson, Sue Weiss, Kathy White and Fr. Ev Hemann Members Absent: Chanda Mwanza The September minutes were approved with the request to include Members absent. The October agenda was approved. Religious Education Feedback • The opening mass and welcome seemed to go well. • There was poor attendance at the Parish Mission sessions for religious ed families. Reports 1. Web Page: Fr. Ev has approved the page and Kathy provided a list of catechists to Scott. Scott has agreed to maintain the page if the information is given to him in a format that can be added directly. The page is not yet linked to the STA home page. Joanne will find out the status of the RE page being linked to the STA home page. 2. Parish Council: Ann reported that the Parish Council offered to donate an apartment in Cardinal House to a hurricane Katrina evacuee rent free. Fr. Ev updated that it has now been occupied by someone displaced due to the hurricane. There will be a Lector Workshop on October 18, 2005. The parish directory still needs a cover design. 3. Youth Minister: A search committee has been formed, but it is on hold until the search committee for the Development Director is complete. 4. DRE: • Whole Community Catechesis- There will be a WCC workshop in Des Moines Wednesday, November 17, 2005. Kathy will attend. Any board member interested in attending should let Kathy know by the next board meeting. • Catechists, needs, etc. – Most of the catechist and other volunteer positions have been filled, but there still a few remaining. Now Kathy is working on making sure everyone has the proper paper-work filled out and VIRTUS training. • Student Participation Report – A list of each grade and class size was provided. Elementary class sizes are very small on Wednesday afternoons. Discussion was held on possibly eliminating Wednesday afternoon classes and lengthening Sunday classes, or consolidating some of the Wednesday classes. Kathy will contact the Wednesday families to get their feedback. • October Activities – 10/5 – Confirmation parent/student meeting 10/9 – Youth ministry gathering 7:30 – 9:00 p.m. -will include a brainstorming session with Fr. Dennis 10/19 – Catechist inservice in Marshalltown – No RE classes
End of October – one student and one catechist will attend NCYC Unfinished Business 1. Vote to amend the constitution: • Joanne moved to amend Article 4 Section 1 of the Constitution as worded in the June minutes. Fr. Ev seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. Board officers will be elected by October 31 and take office at the November meeting. • Jenna moved to amend Article 3 Section 4 of the Constitution as worded in the June minutes. Mark seconded the motion. Motion passed unanimously. New members will begin their terms at the end of the May meeting. • Kathy will provide board members with updated copies of the Constitution. 2. VIRTUS Training: will be held at STA October 9, 2005 from 2-5 pm. New Business 1. Open Enrollment Policy: There is concern about families being enrolled in RE without being registered in the parish. Discussion followed and included not wanting to turn families away and the possibility of charging non-parishioners more for RE classes. This will be discussed again at the March meeting when the budget is discussed. 2. Board of Ed Photo: A picture of the Board of Ed members will be taken at the November meeting for the bulletin. Chanda Mwanza has resigned from the Board and Fr. Ev will appoint someone to fulfill her term through May 2006. 3. Advent/Christmas Pageant: An Advent/Christmas program by the RE students will be held on Wednesday, December 21, 2005. Kathy has the script, Sue will help with costumes, Donna with music, and other parents are also needed to volunteer to help put on the program. The program will be open to elementary, middle, and high school students and participation will be optional. RE class time will not be used for preparation. In-service • Kathy in-serviced the board on the 8 Components of Youth Ministry. The meeting closed with a prayer at 8:55 pm. Next Meeting: Tuesday November 1, 2005 at 6:15 pm (before Holy Day Mass)
