					FAMILY SCYDMAENIDAE (Ant-like stone beetles)
A. Davies Forty-eight species of Scydmaenidae have been recorded from Canada and Alaska. Improvements in the current taxonomic status and in the methods and frequency of collection of the species should greatly increase this number. Scydmaenidae tend to be common locally, possibly following distributions of the mites on which both the adults and larvae feed. They are found chiefly in wet mosses, deep forest litter, decaying logs and tree stumps, tree-holes, sawdust piles and compost; some species are associated with ants and caves. Most of the North American species of Scydmaenidae were described by J.L. LeConte (1852) and Casey (1897) but these works included many synonyms and the higher classification was confused. Major improvements were made by Leng (1920), Marsh (1957) for western North America, and Arnett (1968), but only recently have Casey's North American genera been viewed in a worldwide perspective by Franz (1985). This publication, together with recent work by Suter and Newton (not yet published), forms the basis of the present arrangement.
