                            POSITIONS DESCRIPTION and APPLICATION

                                   The Corporation for Findlay Market
                                            Cincinnati, Ohio

Effective Date: February 8, 2010 Classification: Contract
Position: 10 Farmers and Farm Teams will join Findlay Market’s Urban Farm Program
Goal: 10 market production far plots (tended full time)
Summary
Urban farms can produce 15 times more per acre than rural farms, growing readily marketable
vegetables, fruits, eggs, and poultry. They can be thriving cottage industries and part of community-
based economies. On less than one acre (208 ft x 208 ft) novice farmers might gross $500 (or more)
per week or $15,000 (or more) in a 30 week season; expert farmers might gross $60,000 or more.

In 2010 The Corporation for Findlay Market will be sponsoring up to 10 applicants as:
1. Farmers (at least two years growing and commercial selling of produce, dairy, or meats) and
2. Apprentice Farmers (having less than two years experience).

Joint applications (several people working collaboratively as one group) are encouraged.

Applications will be accepted in February and interviews conducted in March. Farmers accepted into
the program begin work in mid-March with weekly classes: They will write business plans and plan
their planting season. Produce sales will start as soon as farmers are able to harvest early
vegetables. Income starts with sales.

General Description:
Farmers and farm teams will be responsible for preparing lots: clearing ground; preparing raised
beds; tilling; adding organic soil amendments; irrigating; developing skills in pest management; and
planting, cultivating and harvesting vegetables. Participants will write business plans and work plans;
plan their plots; market and sell their harvest, keep expense and income records; and analyze and
evaluate their work. You must be able to think creatively and independently to solve problems. The
work is challenging, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Provided instruction includes workshop
classes, field trips, and hands-on demonstrations. The goal is to teach and demonstrate a
sustainable agriculture on city lots in Cincinnati. Development in future years may include extending
the growing season, greenhouse production, fruit, goats, poultry, and bee hives and honey
production. Collaboration is a must. Ability to dream and commitment to put hopes into action is a
must.

Applicants must make a year’s commitment, though permanent work is the goal. Farming a plot will
most likely require a full time effort from May through September; several people working
collaboratively as one group may meet this requirement. Farmers will sell their produce at the
Findlay Market farmers market using free stalls on Tuesday and Sunday in 2010 and at other
Cincinnati area farmers markets throughout the week.

Rhine and other near-downtown neighborhoods.
