Mary Brainerd is president and chief executive officer for HealthPartners, a family of nonprofit
Minnesota health care organizations headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She has been with
the organization since 1992.

As president and CEO, Ms. Brainerd leads one of the largest health care organizations in the
country. The HealthPartners (www.healthpartners.com) family of health care companies serves
more than one million medical and dental health plan members nationwide and is the largest
consumer-governed, nonprofit health care organization in the nation. HealthPartners is comprised
of a diverse group of organizations, including HealthPartners, a 700,000 member, consumer-
governed health plan; HealthPartners Medical Group & Clinics; RiverWay Clinics; North
Suburban Clinics; HealthPartners Central Minnesota Clinics; HealthPartners Dental Group &
Clinics; Regions Hospital; Regions Hospital Foundation; HealthPartners Research Foundation;
HealthPartners Institute for Medical Education and Group Health, Inc. More than 700 physicians
and 10,000 total employees serve patients and members at more than 70 locations.

Under Ms. Brainerd’s leadership, HealthPartners has won national and state recognition:

Prior to joining HealthPartners, Ms. Brainerd held senior level positions with Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Minnesota, including senior vice president and chief marketing officer. She was also
senior vice president and chief executive officer of Blue Plus. In addition, she was a marketing
instructor in the graduate program at Metropolitan State University.

Ms. Brainerd’s honors include being named Executive of the Year (2007); Most Influential
Women in Business (1999, 2002) by the Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal; the Medal of
Distinction from the College of St. Catherine; the University of St. Thomas Award for Ethical
Leadership (2002); recognized as one of the top 25 women in healthcare by Modern Healthcare
(2005); the Jean Harris Award from the Women’s Health Leadership Trust (2005); and Century
College’s Women of Distinction Award (2006).

Ms. Brainerd holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of St.
Thomas, and a bachelor-of-arts degree from the University of Minnesota. She grew up in St. Paul
and has been actively involved in the Twin Cities community for several years. Mary is one of
the founding CEOs of the Itasca Project, a group of 40 government, civic and business leaders
addressing the issues that impact long-term economic growth, including jobs, education,
transportation, and a economic disparities. She also serves on the boards of Minnesota
Life/Securian, St. Paul Foundation, Capital City Partnership, and the Minneapolis Federal
Reserve.
