The school's creation was the result of the vision and devoted efforts of Martha Berry, the daughter of a prosperous local business owner who had come to believe that education could provide a path from poverty for local children. Martha decided to use the 83 acres she had inherited from her father to found the Boys' Industrial School. Eventually, her endeavor grew to include a girls' school (1909) and a junior college (1926). The junior college later expanded in to a senior college, Berry Co llege, which graduated its first class in 1932. From its inception, Berry has emphasized the regenerative power of work. The academic curriculum followed Martha's declaration that the schools shou ld promote a comprehensive education of "the head, the heart and the hands." The schoo ls' religious teachings placed greater emphasis on service than on theology, as reflected by the adoption of the biblical admonition, "Not to be ministered unto, but to minister," as their motto. Self-help ideals and Martha's relentless fundraising efforts made the schools an attractive cause for the nation's pol itical and social elite. Substantial contributions - including the donation of severa l buildings by automobile manufacturer Henry Ford - helped keep the schools in operation despite tight budgets. Martha also approved land purchases in Floyd County as a way to promote the institution's long-term financia l security. By the 1930s, the schools owned nearly 30,000 acres and possessed the largest campus of any educational institution. Martha Berry, meanwhile, gained national renown for her efforts, including recognition in 1930 from Good Housekeeping magazine as one of the nation's 12 most influential women. Martha Berry's death in 1942 deprived the schools of their central figure. Without the founder's personal appeals, contributions declined. Declining enrollment and high costs led to the closing of the girls' school in 1955. The college and boys' school likewise struggled, and five presidents served over a 12-year period. Ultimately, the trustees concluded that the best hope for Berry's legacy lay in the development of the college. Under the leadership of Dr. John R. Bertrand, who was appointed president in 1956, the college continued to offer vocational training but concentrated on improving the liberal arts and professional programs to competitive levels. Berry gained accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools in 1957. Other reforms were enacted in the 1960 and early 1970s, and by the late 1980s severa l publications recognized Berry College as one of the best comprehens ive colleges in the Southeast. Dr. Gloria M. Shatto, who made history in 1980 as the first female college or univer ity president in Georgia, continued to work on securing the institution's financial stability and led the completion of Berry's first major capital campaign. She also oversaw improvements in Berry's academic, student work and religion-in-life programs. In 1984, she entered into a partnership with Truett Cathy, C hick-fi l-A founder, to establish WinShape Center on Berry's mountain campus, former site of Berry High School and Academy (closed in 1983). Dr. John Scott Colley assumed the presidency in 1998 and worked to improve the college's national academic reputation, increase diversity within the faculty and student body, and bolster classroom, laboratory and student life fac ili ties. During this time, the college embarked on the most successful fundraising effort in its history, the $100 million Century Campaign. Dr. Stephen R. Briggs became Berry's eighth president in July 2006. Key events during hi tenure include the January 2008 grand open ing of the Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center. Under his leadership, Berry remains committed to providing students with a firsthand learning experience that emphas izes strong academ ics, meaningful work opportunities and a commitment to community ervice. 11 The Berry College Seal The Berry Co llege Seal consists of a scro ll bearing the college's motto, a shield inscribed with the four symbols upon which Martha Berry based her work - the open Bible, the log cabin, the lamp and the plow; and, surrounding the scro ll and shield , a circle in which are inscribed the college name, the name of college founder Martha Berry and the year she established her first school, The Boys' Industrial School. The Bible was the foundation of the ea rly school; it represents Berry's Christian heritage. The log cabin represents simp licity, or in the words of a student in the early days, "our simple way of livingthe very beginning." The lamp symbo lizes the desire ro learn, and the plow stands for labor. The Berry College Mace Leading today's processional is the faculty marshal, Dr. Janna Johnson, '81 C, who carries the official Berry College mace. The Berry College mace was first carried on April 9, 1999, in the inaugural ceremonies for Berry College's seventh president, Dr. Scott Colley. The mace was de igned and crafted by Luther Pugh, a 1951 graduate of Berry's high school, with ass istance from his brother, Arthur Pugh, who graduated from Berry's high school in 1952. The Berry Co ll ege mace features the traditional ball shape topped with two sections styled after the finials located on the first level and upper levels of the Berry College Chapel. Embedded in the mace are three medallions bearing the college sea l and symbolizing the three parts of Berry's mission to educate the head, heart and hands. Academic Costume The gowns and trim of the academ ic regalia represent the highest degree earned. The color of the gown and the trim of the hood may also represent the institution from which the degree was awarded. The color of the hood traditionally represents the discipline in which the degree was earned. For all academic purposes, includ ing trimmings of doctor's gowns, edgings of hoods, and tassels of caps, the colors associated with the different subj ects follow: Agriculture Arts, Letters, Humanities Co mmerce, Accounting, Business Dentistry Economics Education Engineering Fine Arts Forestry Home Economics Journalism Law Library Science maize white drab lilac copper light blue orange brown russet maroon crimson purple lemon Medicine Music Nursing Oratory (Speech) Pharmacy Philosophy Physical Education Public Administration, including Foreign Service Public H ealth Science Social Work Theology Veterinary Science green pink apricot silver gray o li ve green dark blue sage green peacock blue salmon pink go lden ye llow c itron scarlet gray 12
